What action games have the best large scale epic battles?
I dunno, maybe the original God of War 1 and 2? There's probably quite a few examples including the entire musou genre and arguably war shooters if you're being flexible on what an action game is. I remember more than a few Star Wars and LotR games did it too, I remember the final stages in Jedi Academy were pretty cool for that.
>>741479030>>741479525Also the opening and final sequences of Onimusha 3, that was pretty cool too even if a lot of it was just really nice cutscenes.
>>741479525>god of waryou're joking, right? it's like six enemies in a room while stuff happens in the background.
>>741479852You didn't specify the battles had to be directly part of gameplay. Unsurprisingly when you have that many active characters on screen at a time you're going to have to make some serious compromises which is why musou games are designed the way they are. So do you want cool battles at a backdrop to cool action or are you willing to accept a drop in combat quality if it means everything on the screen is engaging in gameplay?
>>741479852The point is that they make you feel like youre part of a huge battle of city seige.Video games are about maintaining an illusion>>741479992I'm OP. Thanks for the recs. I'm fine with either style.
>>741480189No worries, hope they meet your expectations!
>>741479030For me Dynasty Warriors Origins and Mount & Blade: Warband were the best for this despite the extremely different approaches.I also wouldn't say the other Musous give me the "epic battle" feeling. I love them but they're just big maps with lots of enemies. Might be enough for you though.
>>741480398>Mount & Blade: WarbandDamn, I'm an idiot, I completely forgot about those games even thought they're probably the best examples.
>>741479030the total war series is the first thing that comes to mindspace marine 2 had decently sized battles but you're generally fighting relatively small packs of enemies at a time
>>741480594Does Total War even count as action?
Are you specifically looking for hack-and-slash fantasy-style combat? If you're willing to broaden your horizons, you might consider checking out the Ace Combat games. Some of them, especially AC Zero, are very operatic and good at making you feel like you're spearheading a much larger battle.
>>741480660i don't think so

>>741479030kingdom under fire or any warriors game?battle engine aquila maybe?these games are more 'playing essentially a super unit in an RTS' gamesi wish there were moredragon commander is kinda ass
>>741479992>>741480189what casual nonsense am I readinggo watch a movie
>>741480950Wow, rude.
>>741479030Musosus are specifically designed for this kind of thing. Also, the LOTR batman type games, and some of the other LOTR games come to mind.Big multiplayer shooters like planetside, and battlefront.>>741480821>>741480821EDF! EDF!EDF!>>741479992If it's not part of gameplay, then that hurts it's claim to be the best.
>>741481018absolutlely! And I'll do it again. What you gonna do? You gonna pursue lu bu? I don't fucking think so.
>>741479030Ryse: Son of Rome has some nice battle scenes.
>>741481067I'll pursue Himiko instead, there's more incentive.
>>741479525Spartan: Total Warrior is a better example since it's about killing entire armies, not just a few Greek monsters at a time.
Crimson Desert.
Mount and Blade is the only one where getting swarmed by ten people at once is actually dangerous
>>741483000you havent played many games have you?
>>741479030MOUNT AND BLADEDYNASTY WARRIORSetc
>>741484303Storywise they're a complete dud but the Calphade Siege is pretty fucking great visually and mechanically, easily the game's high point.
>>741484438its density is ok, but there are so many war games that do it much better. mechanically its not really great. there are no siege weapons you can use or other fun stuff, you just try to put banners in their shitty holes while everyone keeps attacking you and makes you drop it. i mean its not bad, but its definitely not the best, which is what op asked
>>741484484I really liked how lengthy it felt, it's practically designed to have you start it by day and end it by night, soaked in blood and calling in canonfire as the weird spinny tanks light up the environment with their flamethrowers. Realistically it should've been the narrative climax of Hernand as a whole but whoever was in charge of the narrative (assuming it wasn't AI) has got to be an ADHD wreck unable to linger on a topic for longer than a chapter if pushed to his absolute limit.
>>741484356>DYNASTY WARRIORS
>>741484356>mount and bladei fucking wishin a single snapshot the battles can look and feel amazing, but the actual combat fucking sucks, with everyone sprinting backwards and constantly moving, there is never an actual 'melee' or formations or anything, its just backpedaling moshpits
