Suddenly, the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be over taken. Fey he seemed, or the battle fury of his fathers ran like new fire within his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a God of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shown like an image of the sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed.

Because he would have known almost all of them after a life time serving together in the marches, against orcs, at feasts, as the close kinsmen and cousins of the village headsmen and his vassal's bodyguard. To see him riding out before them, free and proud acknowledges his faith that anyone one of them would have the strength to carry on if he fell there, and that he would die without hesitation or restrained feeling of leaving anything behind unfinished

to die first in that battle would have been one of the greatest honors among all the days counted by the sons and daughters of his people

>you can literally impregnate bitches and raise a family if you want besides adventuring with your wife, etc

I think they are art, they do immersion better than whatever else. The movie you aint in control so you aint inhabiting anything with your imput. A painting can make your mind wander a bit into it but there aint any real stakes or punishment for having no "survival instinct" a painting cant "fight back", literature even choose your own adventure books it's ultimately a linear story you aint in control of the imputs its all been predetermined.

Really the greatest problem with gaming as an artform is that the people advocating the most for it just want movies and don't actually respect it as it as an artform. Great example being something like Pathologic 2 where people cried endlessly that the game about a town trying to survive a plague where resources are supposed to be scarce actually made you feel it instead of just being a walking simulator and had people want supplies that you needed too until the devs finally added difficulty sliders (that they plead with you ingame to not use). I think there's a tremendous amount of potential for video games that I was looking forward to seeing fulfilled as a kid but it's being utterly wasted because midwits think the peak of what video games can do are movies made by hacks that only use the medium to compensate for their terrible pacing.

Sauron had sent out forces to defend against any reinforcements coming to Minas Tirath's aid. Theoden, with the help of the Druedain, used hidden paths to sneak his army past them. His attack on the besieging army took Sauron by surprise.

Remember that the Rohirrim had force marched for days with little rest to get to the city. When they arrived and found it already breached and burning, and an army that vastly outnumbered them outside it's walls. Battles can be won and lost on morale, so a speech and horns are important if you don't want your army to route.

It is a simple desire for a man to be useful. Whether poor or rich, fat or thin, stupid or smart: men are social animals whose greatest drive in life is to be of use to someone. War movies have, since time immemorial, always been used as propaganda to harness this feeling. “Die for your country and for honor” has echoed through movie theaters for decades and through the mouthpieces of the powerful for centuries.

But unlike any other battle in the history of mankind, in *The Lord of the Rings* there is no man-against-man war in which young men are sacrificed on the front lines so that the king can gain more land or resources. Here, the war is a purely moral one against an absolutely evil force. Good versus evil, man versus orc. There are no political debates about whether it’s righteous to side with Rohan.
Either you fight alongside Gondor, or humanity and all the free peoples of Middle-earth will be enslaved. The vast majority of men would do this. They would ride with King Théoden, riding to the ends of the world. Not because they have to, but because they want to.

Usually the king obviously doesn't lead the charge because it's the position most likely to die and it's a problem if the king dies. Him not only leading the charge but outpacing the rest of the army is a silent message that he does expect to survive the battle regardless. The 'thereafter' doesn't matter anymore, just this last act of valour.
>>
>>741495479
I blame the roach government for taking advantage of the company to use them as glorified daycare for their gamedev dropouts. We will never see unfiltered kino like Paradigm Worlds making a comeback. Because they can't stop fucking over the modding autists with their constant patching.
>>
>>741495696
Even the modders can't save the game.
It still lacks features that Warband had years ago, and the whole game is a shitshow that only got by under the radar because of cyberjunk release hidding it from the tortanic fags

I remember when the vision was a living world full of undeveloped villages that players and AI could gradually grow into towns and fortresses... this is why villages aren't standalone fiefs in the game because somewhere along the line the concept seems to have been scrapped and they couldn't fix the code after the competent devs left.

The worst part was the army of Reddit and starved fans defending every decision and hyping up the roach developers no matter what. In the end, many of those same people dropped the game and moved on to the next fotm leaving the real fans with a pile of steaming shit.

i've been meaning to try that game
the last one i played came out in 2000 and it was pretty cool your guys would automatically back away and shoot when a bug charged them to minimize damage and you could shoot nukes into bug holes

I know about that one, it's less simulationist in relation to it, but it has a good gameplay structure, playing on the hardest diffcult positioning, skillshots and understanding the structure of the mission matters a lot, so it's a fun challenge.

>Why boromir?
Because his catapult idea was pretty ingenious.
>>
>>741506830
Nobility was always a lie to separate the rich from the poor. Ancient kings were just mafia leaders with swords instead of rifles. You'd have to go pretty far back to have a king riding into battle or charging in on foot and dying with the rest of his men.
>>
>>741489893
The orcs simply weren't prepared to face an army composed entirely of heavy cavalry, by that point the battle was already a strategic victory, the rohirrim weren't intimidated at all by the oliphants, although the outcome would've still been grim for the good guys, but then the ghosts came in to seal the deal.
>>
>>741480272
When the most important man in your entire country takes the highest risk possible by riding first into battle, who would not feel a tremendous surge to join him? The king doesn't have to do this because of his status, yet he does because the outcome matters more than his own life. This would make any follower ride this high into oblivion.
>>
i dont care what magic bullshit is going on
a horse is smart enough to not charge face first into spears

Its because tolkien is well versed in mythological texts but he was also a WW1 vet and somehow didn't let the brutal realities shape his view of how he wanted to depict leaders in LOTR. He had this idyllic view of nobility and serfs and warriors and how they would act in society, he also thought evil people could be given genuine chances to repent for their ways in spite of their past actions.
>>
>>741479587
I honest;y thought these movie were so boring when compared with something like Lawrence if Arabia or Alexander Nevsky. Just sdo much awful CGI and meaningless sequences.

Stop trying to apply modern day sensibilities to a society organized following vastly different principles, nobles fought their own battles all the time, because that was their role in society, which they had to follow to uphold their status, a noble house that didn't provide fighters would soon lose their power, if they forced peasants to fight, they would be giving the peasants the means to overthrow them and peasant revolts could and did happen, so extreme abuse had to be avoided.
The arrangement is similar to a mafia protection racket, but only in the context of our society where we have legitimate police forces and the mafia protects from themselves, in the old times, you actually NEEDED that protection from the "racket", because of common crime, brigands, raids from foreigners etc, it wasn't just pure extortion.
>>
>>741508636
>fought their own battles
vs
>spearheaded the first charge personally into an enemy massively outnumbering you
Oceans of difference.
>>
>>741508354
Or maybe it was exactly those brutal realities that inspired him to create idealized persons and scenarios
If men have to die let it be in the name of something great
>>
oh my grrm! this isn't a very realistic scene! where is the scenes showing all so called 'knights and lords' beating and raping their wives and daughters? don't you know those poor innocent orcs and goblins have families and those evil rohirrim chuds are going to kill them!?
>>
>>741508636
>common crime
How much of that was due to crushing poverty?
>brigands
Unlike videogames brigands don't materialize out of thin air. Most of them were former peasants or mercenaries gone unpaid (by whom?)
>raids
And how many of those raids were organized and lead by the rich?
The average man by and large doesn't give a fuck about anyone but himself and his tribe. If you live a relatively comfy life you have no reason to leave or to kill others to take theirs. But a king who wants more land and riches does and he will try to influence you into doing his dirty work by saying the guy who lives on the other side of the mountain is a filthy red and you're a noble blue so it's time to kill. And then he takes most if not all of the conquered land and you get zero in return for getting your leg cut off and blinded in one eye. Oops your farm failed and now your sons are brigands and you're dead.

i got that in dynasty warriors origins
i really, really hope they capitalise on the engine they've developed. origins was just a tech demo and ziluan is lame as hell, the 3 remake is gonna be fun for a bit but i really hope they can pull off a full mainline game

>good vs evil
Yes! No hesitance, no doubt, no grey area, no "matter of perspective".
Without any of this it brings out the outmost of a man. This won't be a skirmish where you simply route the enemy away or a situation where you get captured and bought back later by ransom because of your noble status. This is where all must stand together for the outcome is too unimaginable to bear, the consequences too dire to endure. There is no alternative, no diplomacy, no politics, no surrender and no treachery. The battle is righteous without reservation. For standing against the darkness isn't cheap propaganda it's what will determine the fate of all mankind.

Being part of this grand ordeal should set ablaze the heart of all souls who participate.

I'm playing Bannerlord right now and I keep thinking with Total War brain. Why is calvary so shit in this game? Charges are even more janky than in TW, but atleast they pay off when they work in TW. In Bannerlord, they just die and are better off dismounted half the time.
>>
>>741512879
it's realistic
>>
>"But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him. His heart beat slowly. Time seemed poised in uncertainty. They were too late! Too late was worse than never!"
Love this evocative little bit, right before the battle, too late was worse than never such a great, great line.

It already has and more with Mount and blade.
>break off with 3 bros to hunt some khergit scum fleeing into the forest
>we get ambushed by many and start dying one by one
>my horse goes down by a faggot horse archer and there's still 3 enemies left
>I only have an extra long spear and an empty bow
>swap spear for 4 javelins from ground and get two guys with godly throws
>hear hoofbeats so I do a 180 and instantly throw a javelin point blank into a horses head
>with my last now melee javelin I fight his sword parrying several blows, getting a few pokes in and win by throwing the javelin in his face
>an entire army of khergits start charging directly at me, I assume the worst and so duck behind a tree to catch my breath
>my army is now charging at the enemy from the other side of the forest
>take up my new clean sword and lead the charge on foot
Nothing has ever felt better, the battles where you finish covered head to toe in blood are the best ones
