Or rather, what they didn't do I suppose. TES used to genuinely be one of the most if not the single most well known western RPG franchise in the industry: Skyrim has sold over 60 million lifetime copies, making it the 7th/8th best selling game of all time. Yet Bethesda, Todd or whoever else made the choice, decided to take ALL of this... and do absolutely nothing with the universe for 15 years and counting.

In the 90s, Elder Scrolls experimented with expanding via both Battlespire and Redguard. It didn't pan out commercially, but the intention was there. With the rise of the early mobile phones in the early 2000s, after Morrowind saved the company, they outsourced the Travels games: Stormhold, Dawnstar, Shadowkey... they might've not been a game changer, but they were neat side adventures using the platforms they were designed for the best they could to deliver an 'Elder Scrolls experience', back when you knew what that meant.

Because what does that mean nowadays? They haven't made any mainline games since Skyrim. They keep fucking with that one with Creations. Most people interested in singleplayer RPGs don't care about MMOs, certainly not about having to subscribe monthly to have an optimal experience, or dealing with an ever increasing file size, or an utterly forgettable artstyle, or the creation of ever increasingly bizarre new lore like the existence of a totally OC donutsteel new daedric prince nobody knew about before or after, or the selling of constant expansions to nostalgia bait you, or realizing the game's not even made by Bethesda. They refused Avellone's request to keep the setting and player interest alive by letting NV Obsidian create a Skyrim spin-off. All their ""side games"" are now predatory online bullshit like Legends or Blades, games that can't ever stand the taste of time because they all rely on servers that Bethesda shuts down the second they're not profitable anymore.

Again, you have the seventh best-selling videogames of ALL TIME in your hands and you do nothing with that for fifteen (15) years. Instead you waste 2015~2026 on Fallout 76 and fucking Starfield?

This r*ddit ass speech came about after yesterday I finished a Daggerfall Unity play session and just kinda randomly remembered the cancelled Oblivion PSP game from 2007. Most sources online state the game was gonna be a portable adaptation of TES IV but the leaked build shows it was gonna be its own thing, a side story set during Oblivion's events but with the MC battling the Mythic Dawn and an Oblivion Gate in the Akaviri island town of Rhalta, off the coast of High Rock. That just made all these thoughts sorta rush out.

Bethesda used to play around with TES as an IP, deliver adventures big and small. What I'm getting at is that, in the 2000s Elder Scrolls dominated western RPG vidya culture: you had Arena and Daggerfall being seen as 'le hard old school computer games', you had Morrowind being celebrated as a masterpiece, you had Oblivion being proto-Skyrim in popularity and you had the brand branching out here and there in somewhat experimental ways with Redguard, Shadowkey, the Greg Keyes novels, etc.

Now there's absolutely nothing. People meme about TES VI because the alternative is getting depressed over the fact the most popular original western RPG setting in videogames and all the opportunities for videogames and massive player interest that come with it has been left to rot for almost two decades, and no matter what PR bullshit they spew nobody in that company, not even Todd, seem to truly grasp how that has affected The Elder Scrolls. The excitement isn't there anymore. The world is very different from how it was in 2007 or 2011. You have fully grown adults that have grown up without knowing what TES is, compared with something like GTA which is still able to pull interest via both GTAO and obviously VI.

Elder Scrolls doesn't have that anymore. There's new players on the board. Normies went from not knowing what DnD was to caring thoroughly about Baldur's Gate 3, meanwhile Skyrim's legacy is collecting dust so Fallout 76 and ESO can get their 916318th update and Starfield can be made fun of some more with its shitty DLC.

If I could ask Todd a single question, it'd have to be what the FUCK has he been seriously thinking since 2015?
>>
>>741479993
They've given the people all the time they could ever want to mod Skyrim to their hearts' content. What's wrong with that? TES 5 solved video games anyway, who cares, why force some follow-up

"Hello, I like money"

Bethesda's downf will be studied for years to come.

So you're mad that bethesda isnt an elder scrolls factory like how activision pumps out Call of duty every year?
>>
It was the most overrated RPG of the past 20 years alongside The Witcher 3 and BG3.
>>
>>741479993
Didn't read. The last time they tried was Morrowind.

Kurt Kuhlman left and Ted Peterson is too busy to work on ES6. ES6 will be entirely made by the people who brought you Starfield. It's sad to say, but it will be shit, and not in the snobbish sense where people call Oblivion and Skyrim shit, but genuine, soulless garbage. ESO was bad enough and ruined UESP, TES 6 will kill the franchise and the studio.

>If I could ask Todd a single question, it'd have to be what the FUCK has he been seriously thinking since 2015?
he's been thinking about how to bastardize and streamline the series even more after Skyrim
he still haven't found an answer
>>
>>741481579
ES6 will be in good hands then because Starfield is their best game yet unlike their previous games which were dogshit soulless garbage.
>>
>>741481154
Are you genuinely retarded or merely pretending?
>>
Todd is retarded and only wants to milk Skyrim to help fund his retirement. He doesn't care anymore.

You can say that again.

Apparently he doesn't

>Get stuck working on F76 with the formerly Battlecry studio because zenimax wanted a live service game
>Start working on Starfield
>Covid delays everything as usual
>Finally release Starfield in 2023
>Start working on TESVI
The funny part is that if they rushed TESVI to satiate whiners and end it up being shit, they'd start crying about how they shouldn't have rushed the game.

It costs 6 cents per player per month to run a WoW server. There is no practical point where a server becomes unprofitable. Did you really believe what hobbyists did for free in the 90s has become too expensive with technological advances?
>>
yeah, even at one game every 5 years, we should be at ES8 this year, but instead no one cares
>>
There is nothing wrong with existence of new daedric prince. There is more of them, and many just dont care about nirn
The problem with that OC-mary-do-not-steel-sue (i dont even remember her name) is her shit shit SHIT writing.
>>
and yet ES6 is only behind GTA6 in being the most hyped game of the generation. Love it or hate it, whether it's good or bad, Bethesda will print a shitton of money either way when it comes out. All the money is just going to go into funding more Starfield content btw since that's the real passion project.

>hyped up
Doesn't mean shit in times like these where social media can shoot backwards and bury games under serious critique. Just look at the hyped up cyberpunk and what happened afterward. Do you even remember how hyped the net was when Beth shadow dropped the oblivion remake.

Starfield is one of the best selling games of 2026 btw. That's how much social media is effective in burying games under serious critique.

Todd, please...

Oh no no no no no no no

It really is wild how much less "fantastical" TES seems nowadays. They made the IP fet incredibly stale.
