Not the same thing but this reminds me that there was once a game in development called Voxelnauts, that was kind of like Minecraft but with real voxel graphics. I'm still salty to this day that it turned into vaporware, even though that was kind of predictable given how they were marketing it, but there was definitely enough footage at least to prove it was a real working proof of concept.

You can kind of achieve a similar feel with Minecraft mods now, I suppose. There's also Lay of the Land which is a bit further from the feel but still cool.

The reason this webm works as it does is because it looks like a part of something greater, a glimpse into a vast and mysterious realm. It evokes curiosity and imagination, filling the blanks and building in your mind awesome images of what could possibly be hidden behind that veil. It is said that anticipation is the purest form of pleasure, and things like this, like many artworks, like trailers and commercials, are designed to build up anticipation, to present something in a way to make it look like there's so much more to be found inside.
Of course, once you're actually inside, it rarely lives up to expectations, because it's pretty hard to outperform your dreamed up perfect images. This is why I don't think a videogame could be made to fully capture "that feeling", as magic tends to quickly dissipate as you do another quest to collect Bear Paw x8 to buy Board Sword+5 and Pantalones of Haste.

I'm actually trying to make a game like this at the moment. It's not going very quickly because I'm learning a lot at the same time.

It's going to have a massive procedurally generated world that's different in each playthrough. I've already got a few decent ideas on how to make it actually fun and worthwhile to travel from one end of it to the other (though I wouldn't be too surprised if playtesting smacks down that idea) I'm thinking of making it the roughly 6 million square kilometers that you'll sometimes hear of Elder Scrolls Arena's world even though it's not actually that size in game.
Basically, small towns that are close enough to walk/ride between, lots of points of interest along the way, and random encounters that you can either engage with or ignore (fighting bandits, trading with merchants, stealing from travelers, etc)

The story of the game (at the moment) is that you need to assemble the ten pieces of the Philosopher's Stone to break the barrier on the fortress of the big bad who's terrorizing the land. Each piece is hidden in a large dungeon scattered across the continent. Occasionally on a high level enemy at the end of a dungeon, you'll find a pristine diamond, which you can use at a town wayshrine to point you in a vague direction of the closest shard within the region. So you'll be going from town to town, finding quests, gaining power, and trying to creep ever closer towards your goal.
Daggerfall never gave you a reason to go anywhere on foot which completely negated the point of the huge open world. I hope I can create a feeling of long term progression and adventure.

As for the actual procedural generation, I know this is going to be the main make or break feature, so that's currently what I'm putting the most time into getting right. I've been doing a lot of studying how Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and various Roguelikes do their proc-gen.

I agree, but I think they had a different perspective on it at the time. The reason for the huge world is, while it can be explored on foot/horse, it is more meant to convey to the player that there are indeed large distances between civilizations, and traversing those distances - where nothing largely happens - takes time. That is why there is a built-in fast travel feature. It costs time and money to fast travel, because it serves the purpose of being simulative, just like the large world.

Just wanted this out there, since I see people often ridiculing Daggerfall's large world because they are used to the open world games of today where they are actually expected to explore the whole thing. Different priorities and methodologies.

I also wish you luck. I am also working on something similar, but without procgen. The advantage we have today is not being limited to disc storage limitations like in Daggerfall's day, so it is technically possible to fill it with stuff. I often think of how simple and easy it is to make a GTA: San Andreas world in current year on a technical level, but it takes talent and persistence to turn that into something great.

Also, for anyone who does not get it. The appeal is no video game that has this much scale and loaded assets at the same time. Minecraft might seem similar but it is not the same for obvious reasons. This is proof that gaming technology has not peaked yet and there is still room to improve. But new consoles are not improving. PS5 is just PS4 with more RAM and better specs that already all existed when PS4 was released. Nothing is new. Lol.
