A gamepad is merely an accessory, but for many many many years it should be a requirement for anyone who's a serious gamer because in some situation a keyboard just can't compete. And again, in the 90's people would just give you a look of pity if you said that you're playing Wing Commander with your keyboard and not a joystick.
The only excuse not to own a controller for your PC is if you're one of those people who stick to playing one genre for their entire life.
