>DESIGN IS LAW
>*Sees Quake 2*
>*Wipes glasses* HOMMINA HOMMINA HOMMINA AWOOGA
>Fuck all the work we've done, we need a shiny new graphics engine. I'm sure porting our work in Quake 1's engine to Quake 2's will be easy

Was Romero retarded?
>>
both daikatana and quake 2 sucks for entirely opposite reasons
>>
>>741484976
People will say Quake 2 sucks but then praise genuine garbage like Hexen and Heretic.
>>
>>741484976
Quake 2 is good. The strogg are cool enemies. You're a faggot.
>>
>>741486017
too bad the game is a brownslop snorefest and the only decent part was the multiplayer
>>
>>741484914
I suspect Romero just miscalculated that any tech whizz he could get on team would be just as capable and flexible as Carmack when in reality he didn't know how fucking lucky he'd been at Id.
>>
>>741484914
He was busy designing Stevie Case into the perfect bimbo while also grooming Raluca Alexandra Plesca at 16 to become his next wife. He clearly had better shit to do.
>>
>>741486328
But enough about Quake.
>>
>>741486498
I never knew Romero was Italian, but this adds up.
>>
>>741484997
quake 2 was boring and it sucked, same with Heretic. Hexen on the other hand, was fun.
>>
>>741486572
>Hexen on the other hand, was fun.

Yeah fighting the same goddamn two enemies is a rootin tootin good time.
>>
>>741484914
Romero is a retard who knew how to make maps, not a good game. Being at Id gave him a retarded ego thinking he was the one that made Doom popular when it was all a collabaritive effort.

Also he got smitten by some pussy during Daikatana and was letting his then girlfriend at the time design some of the levels, iirc she was the one who made most of the swamp level the game starts out with where everyone drops the game because it's so shit.

He has made nothing noteworthy since outside of free levels for Doom, every new game he has said he was going to make has never even come to light. The definition of a hack. He's probably worse than Peter Molyneux because at least Peter released games.
>>
>>741486695
Romero is the worst kinda nice guy, where despite being a fuck up, people don't want to talk bad about him.
>>
>>741486572
Quake 2 was godlike and has some of the best movement mechanics of any Id tech game. It also has the best super shotgun in any FPS and the strogg are cool.
>Hexen was fun
Boy I sure love infinitely respawning enemies and hitting a switch that activates a door on the other side of the map with no hint at all to what it actually did.
Stupid retarded faggot.
>>
I don't even remember quake 2, why would that one be disliked?
>>
>>741486824
>>741486874
The worst you can say about Quake 2 is that it's a little uninspired

The worst I can say about Hexen (besides the pixel art) is everything else about it.
>>
>>741484914
Working for Eidos was probably the worst idea of all, but he probably thought "I have an eidetic memory. This is the coolest brand I can attach myself to right now."
>>
>>741487079
Whys that? They practically funded their whole bullshit operation of not producing games.

https://youtu.be/MlsVfQLYsbk

I mean look at this. Some sub-CnC bullshit.
>>
>>741486572
>Hexen on the other hand, was fun.
Until the game throws five Centaurs at you and you go "Oh fuck, I didn't pick Cleric to deal with this slog".

Q2 MP was fantastic, same with Daikatana's. Daikatana SP for me was ruined due to technical issues and atrocious load times for period-appropriate hardware. Q2's campaign was too samey, but that's coming off the heels of Q1/Duke3d which had rather varied locations.

Depends how you want to look at it. Either he laughed while he findommed them for three years in his penthouse studio, or he we destined to get friendzoned just the same as the Tomb Raider devs regardless of input.
>>
>>741487693
Eidos would love to run something successful into the ground -- problem was, Romero didn't make anything successful.
>>
>>741486695
I'll still hate Peter more because he effectively erased Big Blue Box and the Carter brothers from history.
>>
>>741484914
>Was Romero retarded?
No. He was the only one on the team who had any idea about game-level design.
But the fact is, it was all just luck.
What Romero did later with Daikatana showed that, given the opportunity, he too would abandon the more arcade mindset and focus on using games to try to create stories and immersion through silly interactions with human-AI partners, etc.
In other words, John Romero and his friends were no different from all the other Westerners at the time who had ZERO understanding of video games and thought the future lay in creating interactive audiovisual experiences, placing normalfags inside action-movie set pieces (as Half-Life later did so successfully, destroying arcade-style FPS games for the next 20 years).
>>
>>741489876
There's nothing wrong with having a little bit of a decent story or lore. Quake 1 has one of the worst endings in any game and I think it has effected its legacy. When I can say Doom 1's ending is better, that's a problem.
>>
>>741484914
It was the only way to be Romero's bitch
>>
> Was
>>
>>741484914
The other guy was the tech guy at Id.
