That is literally the defining feature of the game that sets it apart from other JRPGs. People who refuse to play JRPGs, were drawn into the game because of how the combat works. There is incredible depth in how you build your characters with pictos and luminas, as well as each character playing completly different. And the ability to dodge/parry solved an issue that alot of people have with the genre whether they knew it or not, you having to act on the enemy turn.

For years, the only JRPGs I could stomach were ones with fast animations, or the ability to speed animations up (Bravely Default for instance). E33 completely changes things around by making you actually focus on the enemy animations, you're engaged 24/7 instead of having to endure long downtime.

Since you played P3R, if you don't like the slice of life there was no saving it for you. Especially since Tartarus is extremely dated and a fresh coat of paint doesnt solve that. P5 sorta solves it with palaces, but really its just Tartarus with some pizazz. Metaphor has a better gameplay loop then P5, and I hope they can learned from that while making P6, because its going to feel real bad when we are basically entering Tartarus again 20 years later.

I'm a Final Fantasy fan and I like E33, I think the annoyance comes out of the fact that the people who praise E33 have never played a JRPG before but act like they're the biggest experts of the genre all of a sudden, they're the Witcher 3 fans of the JRPG genre. The first act was 10/10, even I cannot deny that but past the first act was absolute shit disguised as "deep narrative cues" that were neither deep, nor meaningful. On top of that it is not an RPG of any kind. Your stats do not matter outside of attack as you have to rely on negating ALL damage to you at all times, especially endgame. The game lies to you as it's not an RPG, it's a turn based parry slop game that appeals only to the lowest common denominator of gamers: People who like Soulsborne slop.
