I actually don't hate the remake, it does some cool things gameplay wise. Levels are properly connected and weapons are rebalanced in a way that makes more of them useful.
But absolutely play the original first. It has a much tighter script, better music, Isaac works better as a silent protag and the art direction is better even if the remake is more technically advanced. Plus none of the bullshit modern audience changes illustrated by other anons. DS1 is my favourite game of all time. If you like sci fi horror, or RE4 clones or both, you should definitely give it a go.
In terms of technical issues, all you need to do is cap the framerate somewhere below 100 (physics are tied to framerate and break at higher figures. Most people say 60 but it's actually fine at 75 or 90), force v-sync through your GPU as in game is broken, and install the mouse fix (one drag and drop file).

Overall, the original is better in ways I care about more. The gameplay changes in the remake were good, and the game looks pretty I guess. But it just has a soulless look to it, especially the necromorphs which look lame compared to the og. The gore system was neat though, but nothing crazy. The game feels kinda jank for some reason though, like they half assed the animations. I suppose it can feel smoother than the original at times, but the original was balanced around its player limitations so I never found the combat to be an issue in the og. Dead Space 2 remains the peak of the series in terms of gameplay.

I recommend that you play the remake. The remake rebalanced all the weapons so now every weapon is really good and you have a reason to use the flamethrower which was absolute dog shit in the original. From a pure gameplay perspective, the remake is an overall superior experience. I think the added rooms and the option to return to previous locations to unlock doors you couldn't open before is a nice way to add more exploration to the Ishimura.

The remake also removed the need to always carry at least one power node on you to open certain locked doors. They also heavily adjusted the zero-g sections to make Isaac control better.

If you intend to play the original, be aware that you can't really play the game above 60 FPS since there's physics issues that occur. This also causes an issue where the introduction of the game bugs out and Isaac can't progress through a specific door because the sequence doesn't work above 60 FPS. You'll have to go into nvidia control panel (or whatever you have) to limit Dead Space's frame rate to 60.

My only other recommendation, regardless of the version you play, is to try all the weapons out. One of the gayest and lamest ways to play the game is only using the plasma cutter.

I feel like some sort of idiot savant because I unironically struggle with manipulating 3D objects mentally yet I never had any issues at all orienting in DS1 zero grav. It always came to me very easily but I see other people get confused and disoriented by it all the time.

I really need someone else to acknowledge how much worse the Leviathan fight is in the remake. The entire way it's presented is worse, in the original you enter and the giant chamber is dark until you move forward and lights slowly blink on revealing it's full size. The noises it makes are so much louder and more intimidating in the original. The way you fight it is more original too, leaping across the chamber to avoid tentacle sweeps is really cool, and I love the visual of the chamber "rotating" as you strafe around on the walls during the fight.

I fucking hate the stupid dogs in the church. Also, the stupid thing about the second game, in my opinion, that there is basically nobody (no survivors) in a masive ass city, except Isaac and a few select plot armor NPCs.
It made sense and could have been justified on a locked down space ship, that stops functioning on the orbit, and even tiny work camp on the surface of a planet. But it makes no sense to me in a huge human space colony/city. All the police, military, special forces, veterans, just the lucky people all gone so fast and easy while having way more training and experience than Isaac and arguably way more experience too.
The animated movie about the Ishimura's security team and a few smart engineers has depicted it all quite well. People did not just take it and die on the ship. Quite a sizeable chunk of a population of a massive city would have survived such an event, because they'd learn and think fast.

TL;DR: City/Colony going extinct so fast is stupid.

I tried ds1 on my series x and that shit is 30fps at 720p, if even that and not a slightly lower resolution. It’s extremely ugly to play on a 4K tv and probably even on an old CRT if you somehow wire it up that way. It’s so rough that I basically would have to recommend the demake so your eyes don’t bleed.
