Not having a 3D Mario game for a decade should tell you there's trouble in paradise.Imagine when Super Mario 64 came out in 1996, not seeing a new 3D Mario game until like 2008.Kids that played Odyssey in elementary school will have gone of to college without playing a successor to that game. Everything developed around the IP has effectively made it impossible to ever have something as shamelessly fun and non-specific as a "Mario World" again. Of all the video games out there in the "intended for kids, actually" sphere, this franchise absolutely was that. Unfortunately, they attached it to its audience, and now it's "That 80's Show".
