In 1 and X, characters (barring X's avatar) fit into a role based on the set Arts that they learn. In 2 and 3, characters can fit different roles, but their stats make them more predisposed to specific ones. My issue with 3 is that characters don't feel distinct enough from each other when using the same classes, which means it's more that you're using classes instead of characters with the only meaningful differences being rate of growth (irrelevant once you have all classes maxed across all characters), the upgraded initial classes for each character (mostly a stat upgrade), Noah using Lucky Seven which varies based on class role, and Mio's new special after M. But every single character will feel the same playing as a Guardian Commander, and thus I feel like choosing a character to be that class is less important than whether or not the class is simply present.Making a character feel unique is giving them limitations that are more apparent on them in addition to letting them fill a niche. Nia feels distinct as a healer with her high ether, but it's also why she falls off because her damage output isn't high, and crit healing on Rex with an Avant-Garde Medal allows high damage plus massive self-healing, so why not just have two offensive characters and a tank? But even though Nia isn't optimal, this limitation does make her feel unique, along with the fact that weapon types have different Arts on each character. In 3, you can choose whatever Arts you want for Soulhacker or the opposing Keves/Agnus secondary Arts to your class. If every character is a create a character, they lose character.

Just rolled credits on 1, felt like the middle of the game from like the Marsh to the tomb was dragging but everything after for the most part was great. I do wish there was something to break up some of the monotony of fighting generally nonstop in areas till the next story moment. Whether that be more interesting movement and level design to accompany it, or old school JRPG random minigames. Genuinely cannot recall a single memorable side quest just because structurally they are the same, you grab collectables or kill shit.
