Stuff like fear, web, hold, blindness, sleep etc. Most damage rolls will be successful against incapacitated enemies. Your fighters will deal much more damage than any spell ever could. It's on BG2 where damage spells become crazy and a mage can solo entire encounters. Though fireball is pretty good even in BG1 but detonation arrows and wands are better.

Two weapon fighting is overall the strongest but it's only worth putting two pips in really. Remember that the first pip in a weapon is the most important in terms of effect. It's better to use a good weapon that you have one pip in than a bad weapon that you have 3-4 pips in.

As well as auto-pause whenever you spot a trap, run out of ammo, or a character is heavily injured.For more specific advice I suggest looking up Davaeorn's guides, they go really in-depth on explaining mechanics and what's actually effective in battle.
