Also, what exactly does it mean to be a SOLDIER? And what the fuck is even Avalanche's endgame? Does all this get explained in the original and is just glossed over in the remake?

It's not really just an issue of a lack of infrastructure; it's just insanely dangerous trying to get to and from places.This is why the Strife Delivery Service took off the way it did. Cloud is about the only guy who can safely, efficiently and quickly deliver packages across the main continent.
