Why don't people just use lightning materia to generate electricity instead of relying on mako or coal?
>>
lightning materia comes from mako
>>
>>741598093
Materia is a natural phenomenon from mako rich environments. When you use materia you're not literally burning it like reactors do.
>>
>>741597990
Materia is connected to the lifestream, so the lighting is mako. It's the same.
>>
Same reason they didn't use Full-Life on Aeris.
>>
>>741597990
>burning coal vs putting human beings on a generator and force-feeding them elixirs
>>
This is one of the dumb things about the FF7 setting, game has all sorts of modern technology but they couldn't figure out conventional electricity.
>>
>>741597990
The big one is the MP limit.
You would need a LOT of people to generate power for a whole city, or an infinite stock of ether that is a lot more expensive than raw mako (assuming it's not made out of processed mako)
Also conversion losses and having to store the power of literal lighting.

Also we probably would use fire materia to boil water and spin turbines anyway
>>
>>741598093
>>741598206
materia is the focus, the conduit, it is not a source of energy. spells still cost MP, passive effects manifest by synergy with the user's life energy(this is the effective limit of materia's energy potential).
>>
>>741598572
It makes perfect sense if you aren't a stupid nigger like yourself
>>
>>741598572
Magic is way more stable than electricity.
>>
>>741598572
Why the fuck you will spend money on shit that spins with the wind when you got a massive source of power that can be extracted anywhere?
>>
>>741598206
It's also artificially created. Even in the OG we learned this.
Naturally-occuring materia would never be in plentiful enough supply to be a subsitute for anything. The only option would be to crank up materia factory production, leading to the same result as just using the reactors anyway.
Maybe even worse, since I don't think it ever specified exactly how high an intensity is needed for timely creation of materia. Depending on that, ramping up production might even be worse than it already is.
>>
>>741597990
Isn't that essentially the plot of FFXVI?
>>
>>741599685
I mean only in that magical energy was condensed into a crystal. But that is nearly every Final Fantasy as crystals are a main theme. FFXVI it was going to be used as a one time spell component to destroy and remake the world. OP is talking about using crystals to continually power civilization.
>>
>>741599820
The crystals are being used to power their civilization tho.
>>
>>741598572
>This is one of the dumb things about the FF7 setting, game has all sorts of modern technology but they couldn't figure out conventional electricity.
This is so mind numbingly retarded, Barret literally worked as a coal miner and his town was coal powered before Mako. Yes they had conventional electricity, Mako was just cheaper. Just like how us amerimutts build out of cardboard because we don't want to power more cement factories.
>>
What the fuck did they do to cosmo canyon in the remake? what the fuck am I playing
>>
>>741599926
Oh right. The normal people. I was only thinking of Ultima and the actual purpose of the crystals. I'm dumb.
>>
>>741600119
You don't go to Cosmo Canyon in the Remake™. You can go to Cosmo Canyon in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth™
>>
>>741600119
OG Cosmo Canyon is just the observatory and cave. The overworld region is small and has a few unique random encounters. They created an actual area to explore, which is 100% optional, by the way. You genuinely don't have to do anything in the area. You can just walk to the bridge, go to the observatory, then the cave, then fly to Nibelheim.
>>
>>741600119
why are you acting confused?
>>
>>741600460
>>741600538
Ok? What exactly did they do to the village of cosmo canyon? Why is it just a vacation destination full of smug hippie drum circle cunts instead of a remote, yet welcoming place for people seeking planetary enlightenment?

>>
>>741600932
The two final forms of Sephiroth are just Jenova freaking out. Jenova is a shapeshifting monster, Sephiroth stole its head, so when Cloud threw Sephiroth into the reactor in the flashback Jenova took his form.

The whole game is chasing Jenova disguised as Sephiroth. The reason Sephiroth is so deep in Cloud's head is because of the Jenova cells and mako.

>>741601180
>Because rebirth must make everything as soft hearted as humanly possible to sell more merch!

>instead of portraying some hippies as good because why not, the game makes the point that these people dont really do anything for the planet
>it calls out all the tourists (bugenhagen says it himself) on how they come to cosmo canyon to learn about the planet and pretend to care, just to come back and forget that the planet and life is everywhere, not just cosmo canyon
>Fucking bugenhagen goes through a mini-arc on how he was so afraid and so set on his own mind that didnt see the dangers thats coming to the planet
You genuinely dont really know what you are talking about.
>>
>>741600932
Remember, Sephiroth's goal in FF7 is to become a god and rule the world with the power of the Lifestream by gravely injuring it with Meteor and merging with it at the impact site as it gathers to heal. His "Safer Sephiroth" form is his reborn god form and his true physical body. The final duel in the dark space isn't a physical battle against Sephiroth. Cloud basically defeats him mentally and gets rid of his influence on him.

The Trails series actually does use this premise for the core worldbuilding. Coal and petrol power is specifically noted as obsolete old tech because clean magic rocks are clearly better as a power and fuel source.
Their world is currently undergoing a technological revolution and you see it changing society bit by bit in each game.
>>
>>741601505
Bugenhagen was a stubborn uneducated clown as opposed to a very long lived wise old man and mentor. Why would I ever return to that count for answers when Nanaki seems to be far more aware of everything that's going on?
>>

mako is more powerful and efficient
>>
>>741601624
Bugenhagen is just in denial.
>>
Sometimes I don't understand how the average person is supposed to navigate the world at large in rebirth. Nothing ever works, if you're bad at riding a chocobo you are fucking shit out of luck. There are monsters everywhere (also in the og), and there are just magic lifestream rocks everywhere for some reason none of which are touched in spite of its value

Oh i see. I now remember the name safer sephiroth. But I always assumed that form was a fake and the real one was in the dark space. Thanks for clarifying
>>
>>741601771
In denial the planet's in danger? That's fucking weird considering he is the guy in the original saying "hey listen to the agonizing cries of the planet, it's in pain"
>>
>>741601839
Yeah it is too confusing for normies. Also some of the battles maybe too hard if they dont have the correct materia setup
>>
>>741601839
I assume what we see in game is just an abstraction and that there is actually highways connecting all the towns as thats what it seemed like in Advent Children and Crisis Core cut scenes.
>>
>>741597990
Because eventually the materia would split into two and then there would be too much lightning.
>>
>>741601913
I mean normal NPCs in the world of FFVII you fucking little Pakistani shit
>>
>>741601887
Yes? Did you play the game? He has a meltdown because he doesn't want to believe it.
>>
>>741601624
>Bugenhagen was a stubborn uneducated clown as opposed to a very long lived wise old man and mentor.
He's not at all, he knows a lot.
In fact, he knows as much as Bugenhagen in the original.
>>
>>741601839
I mean they have cars and shit. I assume the main party doesn't use them because they run on mako or whatever
>>
>>741601915
If it's all supposed to still be abstractions anyway why the hell go through all the trouble of chopping the game in 3 different parts and making it all "to scale"
>>
>>741601887
The context is different. He knows the planet's dying and nothing anyone does will save it. He just doesn't think it's going to die any time soon. Cloud and co tell him the world's about to end.
>>
Canonically, does materia deplete individually or does it remotely draw from the planet's mako. Meaning you can use it until the planet is drained dry?
>>
>>741597990
Materia doesn't just magically create shit out of thin air, you need a mana to do it and mana is essentially the mako itself.
>>
>>741602219
Materia's just crystalized memories. MP probably expends Lifestream somehow. Mako crystals restore your MP in 7R.
>>
>>741598572
Remake/Rebirth actually shows a whole bunch of places had electricity already, the Shinra Electric Power Company basically enshittified everything by ramrodding Mako into it.
>>
>>741602219
Materia seems to be an inert substance after it's crystallized from mako, though Advent Children and onward say that everybody got rid of their materia because of assumed bad juju from the Shinra company

I'm playing the remake of this game for the first time and there are a lot of things that I'm confused about. Like, what is Tifa's and Cloud's relationship? The game says that they were friends until Cloud left to become a SOLDIER, but Cloud doesn't seem to be at all surprised to see her working for Avalanche, even though it would be a hell of a coincidence if you found your childhood friend working for a terrorist group. Also, what exactly does it mean to be a SOLDIER? And what the fuck is even Avalanche's endgame? Does all this get explained in the original and is just glossed over in the remake?
>>
>>741603774
There's a twist in the last third of the original game that explains everything.
>>
Fuckin nerds
>>
>>741603774
Play the original game instead idiot. Tifa has plenty of reasons to hate Shinra. Actually, they explain that in remake too. We're you sleeping through the cutscenes or something?
>>
>>741603774
Distant but at the same time close childhood friends
Cloud is something of a manchild and wants to be her knight in shining armor
>what exactly does it mean to be a SOLDIER?
SOLDIERs are mako-infused supersoldiers
The idea was reused from magitek knights in FF6

Midgar is a fairly small section of the original game, Remake blows it up into a full-sized game of its own because they're quite aware that Midgar was the best part of disk 1
>>
>>741603774
Cloud/Tifa and SOLDIER is explained later in either version. Avalanche's endgame is spelled out right from the start in both versions, to save the planet by stopping Shinra from burning its source of energy as fuel.
>>
>>741603884
I don't really question why Tifa works for Avalanche, I'm confused why their reunion isn't really that dramatic. Cloud sees Tifa and is just like whatever, and Tifa reacts similarly, even though supposedly it's the first time they're seeing each other since they were kids.
>>
It's funny how there are normies in the past playing FF7 just because they saw it's popular enough, Cloud has a big sword and Tifa wears a tight sports outfit
>>
>>741603950
>to save the planet by stopping Shinra from burning its source of energy as fuel.
I understand that, but is that really all there is to it? You don't see climate change activists forming terrorist groups and bombing buildings. Seems kind of trivial to bet your life over.
>>
>>741603982
Oh. Yeah play the original game or wait for part 3 to probably shit it to to see that.
>>
>>741604045
Climate change activists should unironically be bombing private jets and holding CEOs hostage in Minecraft
>>
>>741603982
>I don't really question why Tifa works for Avalanche, I'm confused why their reunion isn't really that dramatic.
its not the first time they meet
>>
>>741597990
materia is rare and expensive to use. It's good on the individual scale for battles and such but it's not a good power source for running stuff 24/7 or powering a giant grid.
>>
>>741602219
i think it is said to be used as a battery at some point so you can probably de-crystalize into normal mako somehow

>>741603774
>Like, what is Tifa's and Cloud's relationship? The game says that they were friends until Cloud left to become a SOLDIER, but Cloud doesn't seem to be at all surprised to see her working for Avalanche
Cloud was sleeping in the train station like a hobo after getting rejected from SOLDIER and then Tifa randomly found him and recruited him to AVALANCHE
>Also, what exactly does it mean to be a SOLDIER?
It's a lowercase Shrina soldier that got infused with Mako and Jenova cells to become a SOLDIER.
>And what the fuck is even Avalanche's endgame?
To save the planet and get rid of mako power. This is hammered to the player like 100 times.

Also a side note SOLDIERS are kind of glorified fodder compared to a TURKS. So not really a big deal but Cloud was hung up on it since Sephiroth in their world was like the ultimate sportsball player in ours except he's a merc.
>>
>>741603774
kek people left and right pretty much revealing everything there is to explain
>>
>>741597990
Magic costs mana. In order to generate the kind of power Midgar needs, you'd have to enslave mages and use them as batteries in a huge scale, like in the Matrix.
>>
>>741601839
If you do need to get somewhere, you get there via either boat or airship. If you are too poor to afford either, then either use Chocobos, or you do not travel.
>>
>>741603982
>Cloud sees Tifa and is just like whatever, and Tifa reacts similarly, even though supposedly it's the first time they're seeing each other since they were kids.
tifa first discovers cloud as he's recovering from the mako coma he was put into by hojo after the nibelheim disaster. Zack pulled him out of Hojo's lab and eventually died to save him, and cloud being totally mindbroken and filled to the brim with baja blast assumes Zack's identity as his own. the game starts after he and Tifa meet for the first time, she's the one who convinces him to take the reactor bombing job to keep him close.
>>
>>741604632
Also, with all the monsters everywhere, It seems to me that trying to travel on land would be a nightmare.

What if you have to be under the effects of mini to live in Midgar? That would lower the energy requirements and you would need fewer mages.
>>
>>741603774
cloud and tifa's entire hometown, including their families, were murdered by shinra, so not really surprising that tifa is a terrorist.
>>
We've actually known that traveling between cities was always rough for a while. It's not really just an issue of a lack of infrastructure; it's just insanely dangerous trying to get to and from places.

This is why the Strife Delivery Service took off the way it did. Cloud is about the only guy who can safely, efficiently and quickly deliver packages across the main continent.
>>
>>741604678
game has plenty of vehicles because of exactly that problem really. Birds, trucks, that weird buggy thing you get from dio, motorbikes, airships, helicopters etc etc. The party travels on foot because they are vagrants for the most part. Shinra basically outright circumvents monsters entirely via air travel.
>>
>>741604878
You only see the wreckages of those vehicles outside the cities, and the handful of individuals who do rely on them are just the ones gutsy enough to brave it. Most people wouldn't have the courage to go on a roadtrip in a world where gigantic birds that can fucking shoot lightning out of their bodies exist.
>>
>>741604952
that's just regular junk, a truck getting blown up on the way to a place wouldn't be moved to outside of a town, it'd be left to rot where it exploded. likely old world tech before the mako revolution came about
>>
>>741605250
The remnants of a highway that connects Midgar to Kalm exists, but it's clearly fallen into severe disuse. People just don't travel on land much. It's all land now.

Even in Advent Children, where mako's dead so airships wouldn't be as common, there just isn't a whole lot of land traffic. It's why Cloud makes a killing as a delivery man.

>>
>>741605331
Shinra is kind of famous for not caring for the infrastructure of the places they manage given the whole dropping the plate and not bothering to fix or replace it thing. If they actually committed patrols to the highways and put resources towards keeping it in tact, it wouldn't be a problem at all. but the rich have all mostly swapped to air travel, so no roads need to be managed or cared for outside of the city lines. Cloud can make a killing delivering stuff because there is a power vacuum after shinra gets blowed up, and he's one of the few people who has seen the entire planet on foot.
>>
>>741603982
Not the first time they meet and cloud is autistic who has trouble expressing himself. He doesn't want to be there and although Tifa is a hot piece of ass he's afraid and possibly gay.
>>
>>741605572
Average Shinra fodder would die in droves.
>>
>>741605445
Cloud's power source is Tifa. When Sephiroth slashed Tifa, Cloud tard raged and beat Sephiroth. When Cloud was applying for Soldier, that was furthest he was from Tifa as Midgar abd Nibelheim are on opposite sides of the world.

But real, Cloud was physically fit for Soldier. He was rejected because of his mental weakness
>>
>>741605445
it was basically a fluke, he got a lucky sneaky shot in on a fully manic sephiroth. clear headed sephiroth in an actual 1v1 Cloud didn't stand a chance. Zack didn't a stand a chance against a half mad sephiroth either and he was already a SOLDIER.
>>
>>741605365
Not a joke, retard. Why doesn't Sephiroth just use Supernova instead of Meteor?

Super Nova is magic attack and magic attacks arent real. Sephy can use Super Nova multiple times in the battle meaning the solar system is not actually destroyed.

There's too many Shinra on the roads so Cloud and the party never use them. Also almost all the important stuff isn't connected by road anyway. You think there's a highway exit for Temple of the Ancients? That's why the Turks don't use Shinra cars either and are on foot too.

Nta and FF7 is my favorite but turn based Jarpigs in general are glorified visual novels. And it's not necessarily a bad thing. The biggest gameplay agency is setting up your characters and their abilities and exploring the world for better equipment and abilities

My fav is Civ 5 but I agree, it's hard not to go tested and true optimal gameplay. The start of the game is always interesting as you explore and find out your surroundings and plan how to utilize them but at midgame and endgame it's pretty copy/paste of the previous runs
