Order of the Sinking Star: Final Hours of the Demo

Thoughts on the demo thus far?

For me it is Mirror >>> Heroes = Promise.
Looking forward to Skipping Stones.
>>
>>741601268
I already made a thread >>741600472
but in any case:

I BEAT 83 PUZZLES AND I DON'T SEE ANY WAY TO GET TO ANY MORE LEVELS
I ONLY HAVE A FEW MORE HOURS WTF DO I DO NIGGERSSSSSSSSSSSSS
(No spoilers please)
>>
>>741601427
Maybe spell the name correctly next time so the thread is actually searchable.
>>
>>741601502
Yeah I thought it could be an issue
>>
>>741601268
So far I liked the puzzled though some mirror ones felt like a chore but mostly its to do with them being harder. Promise and heroes are signifincantly easier
>>
>>741601427
still wondering this btw
>>
>>741601704
Everyone is saying mirror is hardest, but it felt the most intuitive to me.
>>
>>741602172
the mechanic is straight forward and there are only two
>>
>>741601427
FUCKING ANYBODY???

There were like 10 anons who beat all 105 puzzles, wtf are they when you need them reeee

For me, the non-obvious overworld areas were in Mirror Isles. If you can see a puzzle, make sure you're not missing some way to get to it.

Not playing your woke shit, buy an ad next time

>If you can see a puzzle, make sure you're not missing some way to get to it.
So if I see a playable level I MUST BE ABLE to get to it?

More or less. Some you might circle around to from the other side after figuring out whatever paths you're missing.

ill just pirate it in december

i actually think that him making this demo available was a huge mistake. i played the game for 4 hours.

im sure there are many people like me, who dont care too much about sokoban games, but i heard a lot about jblow talking about how big of a passion project this was for him, and given 30+ million cost and 10 year+ dev time, surely the basics would at least be polished, right? the gameplay loop would be tight as fuck and feel like most polished and satisfying sokoban game to just move around in, it would have been resonably well playtested by now so that at least the start's pacing isnt as weird and retarded and with that shit background monologue, game would be optimized etc. and even if it was somewhat more expensive, i would want to support someones huge passion project, even if it wasnt exactly my cup of tea.

but in reality we dont even get ok movement, its actually fucking clunky, in a game where you basically just move (the simple solution is to keep the queue system for presses but if the btn is pressed down for a bit more, some dozens of ms, and after that the user keyups, stop the fucking character right away)

we get an unoptimized game, we get a preddit chungus voice acting vagueposting loradumps in the background that break the pacing of the game even if you can move around while listening to the slop monologues. we get copy pasted puzzles from many other games, no great feeling for completionists in a game with huge amount of unconnected small puzzles that he should have went out of his way to make a nice looking ui where you can see yourself completing them as thats the only way to make them feel satisfying and not just small chores on the map that you forget the moment you complete. we get DEI characters, and overall game that doesnt feel that satisfying in any way really.

and so when i experienced this, now i obviously just wont buy the game, why would i?

the dropped demo just advertised that the game is actually quite mid/shit in most ways and, despite all the jazz around it all these years, nothing special.

but anyway, lets try to give more useful feedback.

aside from the simple movement change i explained, i really think the biggest thing that he needs to add is a very very nice looking ui that users bring up with one btn, tab or whatever, that shows the global map and all puzzles there, and you can teleport around the map very easily and click puzzles you already entered at least once before in order to now instantly play them again in case you couldnt solve them previously.
and as you complete the puzzles, they get cleared on the map in a very satisfying way, showcasing that they are complete and instantly giving a goal to players from the beginning where they will feel the need to clear them all and complete the map, instead of just navigating the annoying world of unconnected puzzles where it all feels like a chore now. since when you finish a puzzle it just basically doesnt matter at all, it was an obstacle that is removed like a rock on the road, it doesnt feel satisfying.

i could also talk about the smaller things like how yes, the background env look good (probably the thing that stands out the most, sadly), but i hate how those cool env were not incorporated basically AT ALL in how the play area itself looks like. would it have killed you to have every level feel more naturally intertwined with the background theme? i understand visibility is important, but the play area is too devoid of any decorations/textures and soul in order to try to make them clear to the player, which then makes background areas something your brain literally just filters out and throws away after the first 5 seconds at best.

also the pajeet mirror island/water levels were too empty looking its not even funny.

Isn't this true for all the Next Fest demos?
>>
holy shit please learn how to summarise your thoughts im not reading your essay

Can I keep playing after Monday if I just never close the game? I was only able to start playing today and I want to do all the puzzles.

Promise's big puzzle wasn't as elegant as the other two wings. There were many moving parts but it didn't make it any more challenging. The ground level was so cluttered with objects and colored beams at one point that I don't really feel like finding out what the rest of that area is like.
>>
>>741608226
No, it's up to each developer whether or not they want their demo to remain playable when the fest ends and most of them won't say one way or the other.

Real glad that I remembered the second phase was happening before the night was over. Was really fun! I think my pick for personal favorite puzzle was a tie between the two in the picture.

REALLY did not foresee how you had to kill the goblins in the crossover puzzle, so that one was the only one that really got a "holy shit, that's how you do it" kind of moment out of me.

Really makes me giddy for how the different mechanics are gonna cross over in the full game's endgame. Personally just gonna ignore jonblow's existence and enjoy the game though.

I really wanna see puzzles where, for example, they take advantage of the fact that the lute character can ride on her own rocks (in a very weird way that's... very inconsistent? almost makes you wonder about the internal turn order), or maybe something that takes advantage of how a character doesn't *technically* die when they get stuck in a wall, so maybe they can get taken out by another character pushing the green lazer into their path later, or any number of things that can happen with mirror-cloning and *literally fucking anything other than the mirror guy.*

Will be buying day one!

Needs more polish on visuals and turning animations otherwise yeah fun game

Animations will almost for sure be getting redone.
Blow fired his last animator for "not meshing well", though he apparently was still using his animations for this demo.

>I ONLY HAVE A FEW MORE HOURS
what are you talking about? it's not going to self destruct
>>
>>741601268
Definitely needs some polish but I enjoyed my time with it. The puzzles struck just the right difficulty IMO but after playing for 8 hours I'm not really itching for more. At this point I'm mostly curious if there will be some hidden twist like the witness besides there being two more overworlds above and below
>>
I'm itching to play more sokoban now...

>Thoughts on the demo thus far?
I preferred Hearty Heroes and The Promise to Mirror Isles. Tif is my favorite character.
All in all, I think the demo was really cool and I'm looking forward to the full game.

they're both kinda ugly

Isles of sea and sky is great visually. The trailer and screenshots don't do it justice. I pirated it, but then decided to buy it after playing for a while.

Bean and Nothingness is the absolute goat. If you are interested in genuinely amazing puzzle games then I implore you not to gloss this over, anyone reading

(I will count it as sokoban even though it's more monster-manipulation than box pushing)

here's a list of the Sokoban games I'm considering
many of them are hideously ugly unfortunately, including all the ones you've recommended
>>
>>741601268
tl;dr demo was good, I'll buy it on release.

I finished 105 puzzles. Music, sound effects, graphics, environment art are great. Controls felt fine. People on here complained about them but I didn't have a problem. Overworld map felt visually confusing in some places to me. As a lot of people said, the dialog is too much in places and I felt like I needed to stop playing until the characters finished yapping. I liked all the areas but I'd say the latter parts of The Promise after you get the wand were my least favorite. It just feels kind of messy compared to the rest of the level.

I think your standards are too high but whatever. I don't have a particular recommendation out of any of those beyond Bean and Bunburrows. I didn't like Gentoo much but it's one of the most Sokoban-y there so you may feel different.
