I'm enjoying the boomershooter revival a lot, but I don't think quake pvp is ever coming back. The slippery slope balancing of item control amplifies skill differences too much, which means there's only a tiny range of players you can have fun game against. A skill differential that would result in a 20:14 score in something like cawadoody would end up as 20:0 in quake, which means less matches will be fun.

In quake it usually works because the enemies have different attack styles and you can make little unique challenges with them. I think the levels the community puts out are insanely impressive but whenever I download one and play it I remember that I'm just not a big fan of how Quake combat feels. I'm too much of a Doomfag I guess. There are lot of great custom enemies and weapons and all sorts of stuff so I don't really know why I consistently have that reaction. I haven't tried Brutalist Quake yet so maybe I'll feel differently about that one. Maybe I just need to find "my map pack".

The equation used to calculate how fast you're going is a little inaccurate but quicker to calculate on a 1996 computer, and if you turn while landing that inaccuracy briefly calculates a higher speed. That very brief speed boost normally doesn't matter, but if you jump before friction slows you back down, you can keep the boost and then repeat the process for an ever increasing speed.

Of course there's a speed limit, but only if you're on the ground; if you jump you can accelerate to a blazing speed
Carmack initially tried to get rid of it, had to cope and just designed Q3 around a simplified version called strafe jumping, you have to hold forward while doing so and can't accel in the air here
Explaining's hard, easiest way to understand the concept would be to mess around in CS bhop servers or QL race maps

The Game Night thread was also just on its last legs in general. In my experience, they manage to stick around for about 3 months until they die off, and it was around that time. At least the BTA server got some use while I was on vacation, so the thread at least closed out well.

But otherwise I'd say /vr/ was definitely better for Quake. It was actually playing with them a while back that got me to get a bit more into Quake co-op, because until that point I was futzing around with different sourceports and didn't know that vkQuake/QS-S did well (at least when under 100ms).

so if you take Z number, you get your speed. But jumping takes the value of friction out of the equation, every time you touch the ground, friction comes back in. So the more you jump, the more you get to exploit acceleration mechanics.

Mario is the same but vertical, which is why jumping is deemed so memorable and fun from the classics. It feels like an evolving interpolation of jump force versus gravity based on your speed. (Tangent; which is why mario bros 3 has the speedometer on screen).
Carmack applied this principle to Z-axis movement instead of Y-axis.
In 1994 Nintendo perfected this concept by having a max fall speed in Super Metroid, but if you fall without an identified ground leaving move (moonwalk off a platform), the fall speed evolves based on air friction.
They also applied this learning to the All-Stars versions of Super Mario Bros but without the evolving fall speed, which is why those games feel different to the originals.
In 1996 Id came across the same issue when players exploited it for movement speed. In Quake 2 they addressed it similarly to Nintendo but because it's horizontal, the implementation results in players continuing to exploit traversal speeds.
Quake 3 instead made it an evolving 'feature' where there is also in-air acceleration movements separate from ground movements, this became a fan favourite.

Full agree with bj though, I feel like The Old Blood hinted at his mind breaking, New Colossus has the relic in the cutscenes that transported him to the arenas, and in it, he calls a lizard a nazi, and a blue blooded samurai a fascist. He's lost by that point.

Fun footnote; in the wolfen game with the 2 daughters, at the end, they find BJ and he tells them bluntly that he went through gateways into other dimensions, each more terrifying than the last. But one dimension was him having a barbecue with his daughters, he thought that when he went through a portal ("respawned"), he finally went to heaven. But the nightmare nazis (monsters of arena eternal) followed him and killed everything. Eventually he got back to Wolfenstien earth and was just hiding in a cave.

I can't guess into anything but QC did have a very short PTS only test period where every player had a very shortened version of the quake styled crouch slide that was entirely unique. It got a lot of positive feedback, was removed after the test and never spoken of again.
My best hunch is that it's a design choice for a game where features are more universally focused. Think Quake 4 but next iteration. So I'm hoping for a thematic sequel to Quake 1 with multiplayer included.
