The sales were underwhelming and they likely shelved all the cash grab ideas they had for after the remake series and are probably going to call it quits afterwards. The game had to be up to AAA standards with no short cuts, so that requires it to be massive and spread over 3 games. You need massive open world segments linking everything becuase of course you do. The story is some kind of sequel retelling in an alternate universe, which does nothing but utterly undermine the drama. It might as well just be an outright simulation at this point to just make it all very meta.

Square is unfathomably incompetent. There's more excitement for the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake of all things. If Square was smart but insisted on milking 7 over multiple entries, they would've told the whole story from the original in the first game; meanwhile, keeping the obligatory Compilation bullshit so they have an excuse to do proper sequels or prequels later. There would still be a drop-off of interest, but it's a safer bet.
