NOOOOOO SAMUS RUN AWAY FROM THE ANGRY INCEL WE WILL PROTECT YOU
>>
The game was so long awaited that it should have been a return to form (a better Prime 1). It has nothing people necessarily asked for.
>>
>>741615617
It looked really underwhelming from the trailers then the reviews and feedback from players came out and it was just mid. When there's that long a time between games it should be a series best entry otherwise you're only going to be met with even more disappointment than a regular underwhelming entry.

Biggest problem above all is that it didn't need to be made. The story revolving around the Metroid Prime creature, now Dark Samus, concluded in Corruption. There is no basis to make Beyond other than milking another sequel for redditlords who can't breathe without being told to do so.

its an amalgamation of bad decisions. the desert, the bike, the team members, the quips, the bounty hunter villain, psychic powers, the green crystals. the best parts are the ones that strayed the least from the mp formula, and even those are worse than earlier games. the story is also aggresively dumb

>2 years of failed development followed by 6 years of development by what may as well have been a newbie studio, even if it was called Retro. 3-4 years is the maximum that a game developed on an optimal trajectory should take, 8 years is development hell.
>Did not throw out what did not work and kept it instead, adding technical and gameplay debt
>Vehicles should almost always be avoided in any game, they are rarely good
>Foreskin helmets are always bad
>Should not have included the focus-test marines, these may unironically have been ripped right out of a CoD game
>Kept the Prime name, even though Metroid Prime was wrapped up with Prim3
>No one cares about Sylux other than people who like mystery box, get excited for next thing shit
>Didn't re-examine how a first-person adventure platformer Metroid game should work, given the advances since Prime 1, instead it's just Halo with a Prime skin. I'm not saying it should copy from modern FPS games, since we have spent the last 20 years making FPS games wrong, but it should have at least figured out a new idea instead of trying to trace what a 2000s game did.
It feels like it was designed by a clueless committee of consultants, but that committee could conceivably have consisted entirely of Tanabe.
Metroid since the early 2000s has consistently failed to outshine or even stand on even ground with fan games.

>SIX (8) YEAR DEVELOPMENT TIME FOR THE LAZIEST, EMPTIEST, MOST GENERIC GAME IN THE FRANCHISE
Legitimately one of the worst games I've ever played and the development should go down in history as one of the worst by a AAA studio.
Friendly reminder that Metroid Prime was developed from scratch in under two years, and the trilogy released in a five year timeframe. This dogshit alone took SIX, not counting the two sponsored by Bandai-Namco.
Nintendo needs to be gutted. All of the executives should commit seppuku they're so fucking embarrassing. Maybe bring in some real leadership who can fix every major IP, including Zelda and Pokémon, cause FUCK are the aftereffects of Iwata's faggotry seemingly unending.

>>Vehicles should almost always be avoided in any game, they are rarely good
Gonna have to disagree with this. Does it fit Prime's design? Not really, but not like it couldn't have worked. Prime example (heh) would be, somewhat ironically, Halo: Combat Evolved and the series in general, which not only has arguably the best vehicle handling in vidya history, but also a variety to go around, and every single one is unique and virtually flawless to control and utilize both for movement and combat capabilities, in singleplayer and multiplayer capacities.
Meanwhile these amateur cocksuckers 25 years later couldn't even get one dumbass motorcycle to handle decently in a destitute wasteland against a grand total of what? Three different enemies? And that's being generous, since the sandwhale is barely an enemy.
I hope the leads of Prime 4 never work again. Wouldn't trust these niggas to stock a grocery shelf let alone develop a fucking video game.

>Why did it flop?
Was in development hell for over a decade and the people who made the great prior games no longer work at the studio or have lost their talent.
A tale as old as time, it's really mindboggling that an small spanish studio is releasing much better metroid games than the studio that quite literally made the franchise become famous and acclaimed by the general public.

Metroid gameplay needs to be faster and more frantic. They should move away from first person and make a third person game with Samus. The Prime series feels played out by this point. Imagine if they made a Vanquish type game but with Samus with powerups. Would be the dream Metroid game.

Very unengaging world/map layout and the upgrades were really uncreative. Plot was also dumb.
>>
The game might have been salvaged if the whole Federation Base was teleported to the desert, and navigating that biome full of federation soldiers and space pirates was the hub between. Would've been cool to see the deterioration of both major groups as they're both cutoff with limited supplies in a foreign world trying to survive against mutant, alien fauna.
Instead, we got... nothing, and instead of that happening, pretty much nothing happens instead, and you spend the whole game effectively doing nothing, and once in awhile you talk to a squidward who for some reason designated samus as space jesus after their species succumbed to space crack, and it all ends with nothing happening, just a cliffhanger for a sequel that hopefully never fucking happens.

That's why they're one of the few (still-relevant) sub-fanbases I still respect in the modern Nintendo fanbase. Almost everyone else caught the salesfag bug.
>>
>>741618947
Is it about them? Not really. It's more like they're just there. As (You) go to do thing, for one reason or another, they are also there, so they tag along just because.
The plot and main motivation (beyond just surviving) is Samus acting as a savior for a race of inept squidbobs. Hence, why a lot of early comparisons were to The Legend of Zelda, because the story feels more in line with playing as a hero of destiny than as an elite bounty hunter.
The only semi-interesting thing I would say the plot has to offer is that you don't actually save anybody. The Squidwards are long dead and there is not even a single/lone survivor, only their memory which they resigned themselves to implanting in Samus so that their culture will presume to persist, and so their failures won't be recreated. Also all of the federation soldiers die, presumably.

I feel like if the dropped the 4 from the title, they’d have had a better reception
I know 4 was anticipated, but Prime is a trilogy to me, and aside from the Sylux stinger ending, it was pretty conclusive
It doesn’t really seem like 4 is the start of a new saga either, so it comes across as a tacked on endeavor
As for the actual gameplay, I mean it’s fun but it leans too heavily into the bland open world while somehow also managing to be empty and handholdy
>>
>>741615617
Ultimately, Nintendo didn't believe in it as it was going through development hell. If they did, they would have rolled out the red carpet for it like they are for Xenoblade Genesis, with staggered Switch 2 updates of each Xenoblades with bonus content for each one. They started doing something similar with Metroid Prime 1, and they were going to continue with Switch releases of MP2 and MP3, but they saw what an underwhelming game Metroid Prime 4 was turning into, so they made a business decision. They could further sink money into remasters and primetime marketing, or they could just release it, and then move on. As seen with the lack of MP2 and MP3 remasters, as well as the lack of any Directs (Kirby got 2), they clearly chose to unceremoniously dump it and hope for the best. The fact that it sold 1 million copies after how bad it was and how little they pushed it is kind of incredible.

Nintendo hit a point of no return and was ultimately unable to unmake the bed they made with a clearly passed-his-prime Tabata and tranny writers like >>741615672. But they were atleast able to mitigate the impact of its failure by using as few resources to push it as possible, as well as release it between two Pokemon titles. This should have been a failure that should have closed Retro down like Concord did to Firewalk, or like how Marathon will eventually sink Bungie. Instead, it was just a normal failure and Retro will be back to the drawing board. This time without Tabata.
>>
>>741616236
How they implemented the bike showed just how out of touch Retro and Tabata were. The appealing thing about a woman on a bike is the woman on the bike. It's really sexy seeing a woman and all her curves accentuated on a bike like that. With Samus, there was nothing to accentuate because she's in her big stupid suit all the time. They should have made the bike Zero Suit Samus only. They should have also made sure the gameplay built around it didn't suck ass.

>>
>>741617757
Hence almost always. But in a game where the movement of your character is just as if not more important than the shootan, you can't really afford to split up the gameplay, there will always be a mode of movement that handles worse and needs to justify existing or there will be something cool that is off-limits 90% of the time because it ruins everything else.
>>741618486
Third person shooters are always kind of floaty no matter what, since you control the general vicinity of your character, not the character itself. Vanquish is certainly neat, but it's neat for a cover shooter, which means that it constantly halts the gameplay with slow-mo so that you can actually aim at things with a console controller.
Third person games are overrated an are mostly an excuse for the animators to make guro and ryona scenes, even Mario 64 has drawn out suffocation.

Was it REALLY a flop? Well, financially yes and it was critically just good but I don't think it's outright bad news. Nintendo would be retarded if they weren't expecting a financial flop.
>start a game over from scratch
>change developers
>hire a ton of new staff
>all for a franchise where the average game can't even crack 2 mil (this was before Dread)
We know it sold between 1 and 2 milly which puts it in the ballpark of an average Metroid game. Chances are it probably outsold Prime 3 already and Prime 2 at worst. If they cared about not losing money they'd put out the shitty first draft or just cancel the game outright.
None of this is to defend the quality of the game by the way, I just wanted to say that Nintendo probably doesn't care and that the series will still go on.
>>
>>741618947
The way it works is
>You enter a new area.
>You get saved or receive a distress signal from one of the Fed troopers.
>You fight your way to the person and then you either escort them to some room or defend them for a bit.
>You then explore the area freely with the rare question or update from them, it's like once or twice an area typically.
>You return to where you met them and then go fight the first boss of the area.
>You then leave and bring them back to the temporary HQ you find with the first guy.
>They then sit there except for Japanese guy who is in four spots on the map that gives you the teleporter for the mech parts and then one expansion pack for the other three as he talks about his life with Samus for like a single minute.

With the robot you return to Ice Belt and save him, he breaks a window you couldn't, and then he leaves for the base.
The only ones that stick with you for an annoying amount of time are the initial guy (Who is only really bad during that initial meeting and when he contacts you about where to go if you're driving in Sol Valley for a while, he's fine in the base) and then Armstrong and the fangirl in Flare Pool where you escort them through the entire map. Fangirl is at her worst there but also fine at base.
Robot, Armstrong, and fangirl follow you throughout all of the Great Mines and you can only explore it with them opening the way.

Last report says it sold one million...by combining both switch 1 and switch 2 versions sales, that is BAD it didn't manage to sell one million in one single console.
>>
>>741615617
because it's the weakest Metroid Prime game and it's been in development hell so long that it couldn't be profitable even if it had been better.

I think the MP1 remaster sold more lol
>>
>>741615617

>>
>>741621420
>Was it REALLY a flop? Well, financially yes
that is generally how "flop" is defined, yes

>We know it sold between 1 and 2 milly
The only data we have is Nintendo saying it sold 1 million. Zero reason to assume those sales have somehow potentially doubled.
>Chances are it probably outsold Prime 3 already
unlikely
>and Prime 2 at worst
possible.
Irrelevant though because those games cost way, way less to make, so the already niche sales for a Metroid game could sustain that. That's not the case for MP4.

>None of this is to defend the quality of the game by the way, I just wanted to say that Nintendo probably doesn't care and that the series will still go on.
Hopefully! Genuinely that Nintendo doesn't do the retarded western thing of shuttering everything when something's not a hit is why they're so good and keep building an interesting library. I honestly suspect that Retro will be put on MP2&3 remasters for now though lol

I suspect they'll reevaluate the formula. I hope they get away from the "Halo-ification" of Metroid Prime.

The worst possible case for Retro is they get banished to support studio work forever like NST after Project H.A.M.M.E.R. imploded. Some staff might be made redundant like what happened to NST but by and large they will likely avoid any sort of mass layoff. More likely to have people quit after they realize they're just going to be doing work for other divisions projects.
