Lean less into cliches, go for absurd fucked up surreal shit. Most importantly, get over zombies and creatures that are functionally zombies already. Do what Silent Hill or Killer7 did, come up with incomprehensible, nightmarish imagery and writing.

I thought she was being possessed by a wish, so it's more a Genie's doing. Either way, they still play up the guy as being evil when I recall it that he didn't really think the wish would work at all, or even what the implications of it would be.

You'd think that but then you have that one scene where it sounds like she's trapped in hell and stuff while presumably a demon is the one in control of her body. Not only that, the guy's wish was "wish she would love me more then anyone" how in the fuck does that = feeding him his cat and shitting and pissing all over his house. And yeah, he is portrayed as the bad guy. At least she got a shit ending too, police aren't going to buy that she was possessed for those murders.

No, it's not just about gore. The Silent Hill games are much less gory than the Dead Space games, for example, but they are way scarier because it all feels a lot more abstract and fucked up.

The Otherworld isn't scary because of the rust, the otherworld is scary because it's a bizarre fucked up nightmare world with bizarrey fucked up creatures running around and you just got pulled into it randomly after exploring what was already a pretty creepy location.

That already started in the 2010s when gaming beat Hollywood. The entertainment industry is only alive because they have easier access to money. Isn't that stuff like. Second wave horror? You had zombies and vampires and human-hunters and Dr. Herbert West's Undead Mess BEFORE you had "guy in mechanic clothes kills teens over and over." Actually scratch that last one, the story is from yeaes back but the movie is only from the 80s so that one doesn't count but you get the point.
>>
>>741618397
>Anyone talented
Whatever that is. Especially horror suffers from low quality.
>godzilla
Isn't godzilla 80 years old by now? It has some great movies. Shin godzilla is my favorite.
>rise of horror
Recently looked it up. Around 2012 indie horror started to convince stars that before were considered above the genre. Since then there were plenty of blockbusters. Obsession obviously is the peak of said blockbusters. Well, at least this might lead to more and better horror movies. Obsession was a waster of time. Shit movie, ugly characters. Neither the story nor the arcs make any sense. Teeny horror.

So let's just get back to the basics of horror and be 100% sincere understand the truth of humanity and terror but also the augmented fantasy they believe of reality and strip it away from them with the cold splash of objective terrifying truth.

The reason so much of modern horror is just slashers, subtle paranormal shit and weird psychological shit is cause they're cheap to make dumb fucks. It's easy to make a profit when you make a film on a literal shoestring budget. Obsession was made on a less than 1 million dollars budget and has made back over 400 times that making it one of the most profitable films ever created. The only film that could beat it would be Paranormal Activity.

Family dramas in the woods where the occasional zombie grunts in the background are not "zombie media". It used to just be a fun little horror sub-genre.

Imagine if the biggest TV show had a giant spider in it and was called "The Great Spider". And in 9/10 episodes, they don't even acknowledge the spider you just kind of see it in the background. That's what the Walking Dead is like.

yeah mate, i can google a word too.
but im telling you, as someone who has spoken english my entire life, no-one uses terrific to mean ANYTHING than "real good"

it was used to much to mean "so much that its scarey" so much that it literally turned into meaning "a whole lot", and then into meaning good, by way of people usually LIKING large amounts of things, like a terrific amount of money, or a terrific number of hot chicks.

is you use the word outside the 1800s, it just means good.

you can wave Edwardian literature at me all you want, but language evolves over time, and attempting to champion this particular piece of contrarian "erm akshuly" really just proves you're doing to to feel superior, on a board about playing bideo gambes like a child.

As some other anon stated here, it's on the producer's side. They started to take roles and be more independent and at some point had significant commercial success. The success comes from good movies not conditioned kids. What you describe is a result of the increase in quality productions.
>70s
Bitch, suck negroid dick. Horror had plenty of crises since the 70s. 2012 was the year quality horror started to flood the markets. Parasite was peak as it was an international success. After that there were plenty of blockbusters, think longlegs with its killer marketing campaign. Horror is very cheap to make and now it isn't shunned by decision makers anymore, hence the availability of it. Horror is also fast to produce, unlike avatar that takes like 13 years to make. Horror is fast money in simple terms. Unlike porn it isn't a bad neighbourhood anymore.

I would say basically everything Blumhouse makes proves that there's still horror slop getting made. All the best horror films are still those made in the 70s and 80s. You could argue they're more consistent now but I would still say that the reason is because of the growing market for horror. That is the biggest factor.

I checked out Obsession and it was pretty retarded. Like something women and low test wimpy teenagers actively form their personality around only to later forget it when a fresher product drops.
And for any lazy retard ITT: the movie is just a generic monkey paw concept where a guy falls for a magic wish-granting ticket and uses it to make his crush love him but oh no shocker!!!! The wish turns twisted and scary and then a whole bunch of stupid shit happens because the guy and everyone else in the movie are fucking retarded. Fucking whatever, 4/10

>there's still horror slop getting made
There's likely more horror slop than ever. I'm saying we have more decent or OK horror than ever. AFAIK Hollywood productions decreased for a while now while horror increased significantly.
>still those made in the 70s and 80s.
Idk, the most iconic ones, sure. It's like we can't produce anything iconic anymore. That's what data driven decisions bring with them, I guess. There are certainly good horror movies made every year. Nosferatu was good, albeit the ending is ridiculous.
>they're more consistent now
I mean, there are still very bad horror movies.
>growing market for horror.
This is a result of more (good) movies being made and this on the producer's side. Some of these movies made bucks, this made fianciers happy and that lead to the stigma horror had vanishing. Genre shift constantly. Hollywood killed the age old tragedy genre and made drama out of it.

I thought Obsession was pretty good but I think it was enhanced a lot by its sound and won't play as well outside of theaters. You have to go further back than the 50's to really see why the Red Scare was so prolific then. Think back to the 20s just after the fall of the Russian Empire, the end of the 1st World War, and the Soviets intentionally sending agents to various countries across Europe and some to America with the explicit purpose to spread communism. The communists were so comically evil in both Spain and Italy that it spurred people to side with the Fascists in both countries because they were less of a constant threat to daily life than the communists. Communist lead protests and riots in Northern England just after WW1 happened as well. The little fuckers can't help but cause problems wherever they go.

people need to do more audio horror. oh wow a big evil monster goring some teenager big whoop. oh yay a ghost posessing muh gf and making her do silly creepy faces. ok. what terrifies me and what made me stop clicking real gore is the audio man. i have watched very fee fictional horrors or war movies where the actor sounds genuinely horrified. how do i explain? real people dont go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! when they get injured, it’s more of a quiet start as the realisation hits, then it’s a panicked AH! AH! AAH!
do scenes where you hear someone getting murderised behind a closed door. that’s way more terrifying than BOO! EBIL CLOWN WITH BLOODY FACE! AAAAAAH!!!

That's how he described what happened with the film yeah.
He'd been posting regular updates and pretty extensive trailers for it showed the majority of the work was done, but he'd been keeping everything on one computer and would have to clear out his camera after uploading the footage for editing.
This was before having cloud backups was ubiquitous, around 2013, and storing things on multiple PCs or hard drives was seen as an autistic endeavor.

And yes, his dreams were crushed. He basically never had any big break for directing despite making some pretty decent student films, and his last acting spot in anything decent was in a 2021 short film some of his friends were doing. Basically never got to move on from regular waging and youtube commentary.

Yeah retards ITT will cope but modern horror is way better at actually being horror than old films. Slashers were better back then, true. But even then, slashers were just watered down giallo movies for Americans who just wanted gore without the mystery and noir elements. There are few horror films scarier than The Innocents and Eyes Without A Face IMO.

You just know she's the type to say even to another human that "you can't write about trauma because you haven't experienced it"
This whole generation of people that need their media to be "relatable" and that they need the characters to be exactly like them or they can't "identify" with them is peak fucking mental illness. >Either way, they still play up the guy as being evil when I recall it that he didn't really think the wish would work at all
He's not portrayed as a bad guy for making the wish.

He's portrayed as the bad guy for his willingness to try to ignore or skate over signs that some shit is definitely up. Like even if the wish didn't exist, it's clear to everyone--and is stated as such in the movie--that she is acting very out of character, very strangely, and appears to be mentally unwell, so him going "yay she likes me it's my chance :)" is dense as hell at best and exploitative at worst. Especially when he finds out she was lying about her dad dying. Something was up, but no he wanted to fuck her, so he ignored all the signs.

But it's made even worse because the wish exists, and he begins to know it. I mean, in that aforementioned scene specifically, he's given basically out and out confirmation that the wish happened and there was a personality shift, but he still goes along with it because he wants to wrangle the situation in a way that works out for him. It comes to a head with the sleep talking scene, taking place after he hears from wish support and knows the real her is stuck in what sounds like hell, and the only way out is for him to kill himself, but instead of caring about herself and asking him to sacrifice himself, she just begs him to kill her so she can be free. She does so without blaming him, and being so patient, but he still lashes out at her and walks away as she's begging for mercy, but he still thinks he can force it to work.

He's just an out and out selfish coward. He's not malicious, but he does try to indulge in the fruits of his behavior and isn't really that proactive in fixing anything. He eventually tries, but lets himself be discouraged, even trying to back out of his sacrifice when all his friends are dead and she's wanting him to fuck one of their headless corpses.

Love spells are real, stuff like this actually happens in real life. Its not just a metaphor and commentary, I mean it is and the write didn’t intend for it to be anything else but that nor do I think he is in anyway aware of the existence of these things, but the story that was supposed to be just a fanciful commentary on real issues is an actual real issue.

In real life it tends to turn out less dramatic as obsession, and more like Nadine’s freak out in the final episode of season 2 of twin peaks. It makes you into a drug addict for a person, you are still consciously you unlike the film but in the same way a heroine or fentanyl addict is still the person. Here is the thing thats even scarier than the film, nobody actually exists. Nobody is their own autonomous independent entity. Everyone is a bunch of spirits, cells, electric impulses etc. making the illusion of a human being. The girl wouldn’t be ejected from her body because there is no real version of the girl to fall back to, demonic possession forms a part of you and molds who you are inherently. We are all demonically possessed, people are never/rarely possessed by demons in the modern day because everyone is possessed by demons, demons form a part of your inherit existence. In fact, you wouldn’t be able to function without them since they are your animalistic personal drives and urges. Without a demon making you hungry, you wouldn’t eat and would just contently starve to death.

"Cumbrain" got filtered after an obvious raid and only on /v/ and its offshoot boards. It was not subtle. If you were on /v/ on a specific day, the word was in every other thread regardless of whether it fit the context or not. It being filtered is what most likely led to "coomer" gaining traction, possibly forced by the same parties too.

Probably mechanicaly. The best "horror" game i played this decade was a fucking strategy game. Aliens: Dark Descent was a pretty decent NuCom inspired game and what made me dread every mission was the consequence of playing poorly. Because failure in this game does not mean getting jumpscared and reseting to a checkpoint. It means losing one or two men while desperately trying to evacuate back to the APC with hordes of pissed of Xenomorphs chasing you. It means having to put your all star squad in the medbay for the near future while trying to scrounge up a mediocre B team that takes away resources and XP from the main squad. The xeno was not the scariest thing in the game, it was the doomsday clock ticking down every day and the fear of loss.

How? It exists, whether or not you personally believe in it is irrelevant unless you are considering taking on a spiritual path to self-betterment or enlightenment (the great work) or you believe someone you know is under a spell. Its good that magic isnt acknowledged as being real in the west yet, and its probably engineered by divine will to be the case, because otherwise you get a chaotic shithole like Haiti with black magicians creating a mess by abusing their abilities.

Dont think badly about anybody, dont wish badly on anyone. Pray to God, gods, angels, saints, Buddhas etc. for help and guidance, even if you think it won’t do anything, because you never know how or when it’ll help. Or dont, no one is controlling. Give to charity when you can, try to give back to your community, think about how much you can give rather than just how much you can receive. Don't try to forcefully manifest outcomes with mental trickery, instead feel the flow of things. Acknowledge coincidences as potentially having meaning, and pay attention to four dreams. Instead of bothering with proving the existence of magic, this is the best advice I can give, following any of this won’t prove anything but the point is to just give advice. If you don’t believe it’s magic, then take everything I said as useful psychological tricks to use on yourself for self-understanding, a happier life and peace. If you believe they’ll work then they’ll work, why you think it works doesn’t matter, if you feel any benefit you from what I said whether or not it’s actually ‘real’ doesn’t matter

I disagree. Horror films about serial killers are interesting because there’s the psychological question about what drives an ordinary person to become a monster.

Also, Perfect Blue is one of the most highly acclaimed Japanese horror films, and that’s a slasher/giallo-like film.

Maybe not the ones that become long running franchises, but a lot slasher films at the very least pay lip-service to the idea. Psycho did it, and most classic slashers draw their influence from either Psycho or giallo films, where the whole idea was that the killer usually had some kind of psychosexual motive. There’s also non-slasher horror thrillers about serial killers like Silence of The Lambs, SE7EN and The Vanishing (1988) which place a lot of emphasis on exploring the motive of the killer.

Slashers play up the fear of the unknown just as much as any other horror. It's just where that unknown comes from. In slashers it's from not knowing another person's intentions. They always use masks because the mask removes the human ability to read intent from a person's expression. If you can't see their expression you have no idea what their intent is and that's frightening. Of course very few slashers actually play into that fear but every good slasher does. Like Halloween for example. Micheal Mires is scary because of how blank he is, there's no complex motives or rage or anything just calm quite desire for evil.

Through complete happenstance, the films I watched before and after Obsession were also both about men objectifying women and responding negatively to them having their own agency, the other two being Under the Silver Lake and Carnal Knowledge, which still holds these themes despite being 50 years old. I noticed that all three films are directed by men, and I also noticed anecdotally many men talking up Obsession.

I've come to the conclusion that films like this are not actually made for women, as they may ostensibly seem and as this comic suggests, but they are instead made for men to feel like they are better than their overtly misogynistic peers. If Get Out was about women and men instead of black people and white people, I expect the men would all gush to the woman about how powerful a film like Obsession is and how meaningful a viewing experience it must be as a woman.

>there’s the psychological question about what drives an ordinary person to become a monster.
Like the otgerbguy said, most slasher's don't actually explore that at all nor are the given reasons particularly interesting, especially when they are couched in some traumatic experience because, naturally, many people who undergo such experiences do not kill, so that's not really a big revelation. The alternative is to give the killer a real thought out reason which can end up humanizing him or straight up affirming nihilism or you add in some supernatural element, and by then you have thrown the psychological factor out.
>>
>>741624659

>there’s the psychological question about what drives an ordinary person to become a monster.
Explaining the killer's motives through psychological justification literally lessens the horror.
>>
>>741623694
Forgot to mention, perfect blue does not actually explore the killer's motives or the causes at all. The murderer is just a stereotype, an ugly weirdo, while the handler is just a crazy obsessed lady. None of that is very interesting. It just plays on very superficial disgust and fear receptors in people. After all, they aren't being directed by a psychology researcher. They are being directed by an artist who wants to bamboozle and be recognized.

Micheal Myers does not have any explanation or justification for what he is. The film LITERALLY says he's just the embodiment of evil and can't be understood or explained. He's the perfect embodiment of the fear of the unknown portrayed through human means. It's obvious they wanted certain scenes like a pissing semi beauty and her crying and screaming all the time and her obvs lying under him without any expression to deliver the message guys bad, mkay? IMO, the best films about killers are thriller-adjacent anyway. Michael Myers/Freddy Kruger type villains get silly after awhile, which is why slasher sequels tend to be awful, even if the first film is great.

I feel like the “leave the mystery unanswered” only really works for supernatural horror (minus rare exceptions like Memories of Murder where the killer’s identity is never revealed).

Oh, literally! A word you seem to misuse. Why cook the cat? They wanted Internet star dead, that's why. Their explanation is: love, duh? Why didn't she return the 20 bucks? Why did it work out for some time? It started after mid of the movie to fall apart, what a convenient timing. The reason it fell apart was that the second choice friends were projecting things, like s/he is exploiting you. No one talks about what shit and jealous friends they are. Why would she start yelling like a demented fuck when they play together? Is the demon bad? Is he broken? It's an idiot's plot. Question is only how long you will avoid that truth. Maybe you are trans and the propaganda in the movie resonates with you idk.

>She wasn't possessed, Bear's wish was too strongly worded and it fried her brain.
There's that scene where she manages to slip back through and begs for him to kill her clearly implying that the one he's been in a relationship with isn't the original person and when the wish breaks at the end she clearly snaps back into the her previous persona. I don't know how you could interpret that any other way other than her being literally possessed. It's just a typical monkey's paw situation, it technically gave him what he want but not in the ideal way he wanted.

One thing I dislike about monkey’s paw stories is that they rely on the wisher wording the wish in a vague way so the unintended consequences can manifest. >fried her brain.
Your interpretation. Best explanation though as nothing else fits. It's ultimately wrong as she's obviously not herself as she said herself while sleeping. On the service hotline she is screaming and the dude on the phone offered to bring her to the phone. Demon damaging her brain or nervous system would be an ok explanation and it would took them like 3 seconds. That's not what those sleazy fucks wanted, they wanted to transport a message how even shy and awkward guys rape and that is just plain wrong. Especially as nowadays rape is considered a cool thing to do. Nobody talks about how women encourage men to rape as they want to see other women suffer. >IMO, the best films about killers are thriller-adjacent anyway
I think the difference would lie in that while both explore the mystery behind the killer a thriller will give an explanation where as a horror will reveal some twist that makes the previous investigation into the mystery feel fruitless as is the case with basically every classic slasher.
>Michael Myers/Freddy Kruger type villains get silly after awhile, which is why slasher sequels tend to be awful, even if the first film is great.
Yeah I don't think I could name a single good slasher sequel. All the best ones are the original films.
>I feel like the “leave the mystery unanswered” only really works for supernatural horror (minus rare exceptions like Memories of Murder where the killer’s identity is never revealed).
I would argue completely to the contrary it's essential for a good horror movie. At the very least I feel like there needs to be some mystery left even if some of it gets explained. Like how in Alien I am going to pretend Prometheus doesn't exist because it actively makes the entire franchise worse.

>>741625578
That's the 2nd best film of all time with the 1st being Alien. Though I'm not mad at anyone thinking it's the best.

I dated a girl in college who seemed a bit goth (always wore black and big boots) but otherwise normal normal. As we dated I found out she thought vampires were real, she'd have uncontrollable screaming fits at things that weren't there and would start crying for no reason. We broke up after she set my couch on fire. I had to get a restraining order when she started breaking random windows.

I thought she was just insane but maybe she was possessed by demons?
>>

Browsing through this thread it sounds like Obsession is just about dating a girl with BPD. Any supernatural stuff is just special effects.

>It's just a typical monkey's paw situation, it technically gave him what he want but not in the ideal way he wanted.
No, they intentionally made the MC word his wish like a retard. If the wishes worked like the monkey's paw the guy that wished for a billion dollars would've received a billion dollar life insurance payout from his entire family dying in some freak accident instead of the money falling out of the sky.

>Perma death kinda repelled me.
Well it doesn't really have perma death. Yes your soldiers can die permanently but if you lose the entire squad you need to reset to the last save room (if you play with "No one can hear you scream") or to the last manual/auto save. They advertised the game as having perma death but it literaly can't work with how they built the game because it has many scripted moments where it locks you in a room and you need to do a scripted defense section. It's still challenging and there will be casaulties (if you don't save scum after every death) but if they ever make a sequel i'd like to see a more dynamic missions like Ufo Defense.
>>

The majority of slashers outright explain the killer’s backstory and motive. Usually, it’s childhood trauma and/or revenge that’s their motive.

I dated a girl with BPD, and the biggest drama you have to deal with in my experience is that she’ll often message you late at night telling you she feels like killing herself and you need to talk her down. That, and you spend more energy trying to “fix” her than having any fun with her.

It’s exhausting more than anything else.

>>
>>741622390
I don't get why people blame millennials when so much media is blatantly written by and for boomers and Gen X'ers.
There's a fascinating thing with Illumination movies in particular, Despicable Me and Hotel Transylvania are very blatantly made for boomer grandparents to take their grandchildren to, pretty much all the adult appeal is for them.
>>
>>741626225
>that's a big reason why they aren't particularly scary

Scariness isn’t the appeal of horror for me personally. I watch horror because I find the atmosphere weirdly comfy. Even some truly abysmal older horror films usually have a cozy vibe. I find that I generally don’t like 21st century horror because something about the grainy cheapness of older horror adds to the vibe. Modern horror looks too polished.

/fit had been using cumbrain for like a decade.
Spread to /r9k/ and /pol/ because masturbation became a hot topic for politics.
Some kids on /v/ found it in 2019 and spammed it in everything, as it usually goes, and it eventually got banned on every board, but that led to "coomer" and a resurgence in "-oomer" posting, so mods just gave up.

A lot of people here are new so they don't know how bad it was, but the DAY it got filtered, you want to know how many posts used the word? Roughly 1100 times, just on August 2nd, 2019.
Want to know how many times the word was used before July 27th the same year? b4k's archive goes back to about 2017, so two whole years, that's a long time.
266 times. In just one day the word was used over a thousand times. That's why it got filtered.

Well this has been the case since about 2015, and it makes sense.
Most of the original userbase left in some capacity and the userbase that was left was aligned with the ones who ousted the site owner and doxxed all the moderators, and they all hated active moderation.
Since the site goal was now just to not go under and stay afloat, going against this primarily userbase became ill-advised and so moderation primarily just acts on reports and nothing else.

Women are not "like this" she has been mind raped by the man to be like this. He takes every opportunity he has for her to remain like this throughout the movie even though she is clearly more and more insane.

Horror games work best when they stress the fuck out of the player and put them in situations where survival is not guaranteed

The opening of resident evil 2 (OG) stands out in this way, having to dodge dozens of zombies with just a pistol and 10 bullets immediatley puts you into fight or flight and gets the adrenaline pumping.

You also get this with resident evil 4 boss fights and its clones (dead space and the evil within) where it balances out the fa t you have way more combat capability by making the enemy much more dangerous with instakills, good pathfinding and constantly closing the distance from the player

So in summary from this fucking essay, horror games are scarier when they are harder
