>>741621937there are three types of artist.1) the artist that makes the most awesome and angerus weapon he can imagen withhout the needed knowlage of how guns work.2) The artist that is also a gunnut that holds himself back to make believable guns3) The artist that has not the time or the knowalge to care and just clones the other two works and call it a day.the first one can be excused, not everyone is a master of machines and mechanics and even fewer know how guns are made and work.the second one is highly prone to fall into the meta. Like >>741622070 said... its often end up in AR or AK build becouse that is the current gunmeta and this type of artist cant imagen or refuse to imagen beyond it.the third is the dangerus one, they copy the other two works over and over again not knowing what is what on a gun. This gives us the cursed bullpup bolt action sniper with the mag sticking out of the stock/grip that also has a hole for the hand. Looks good but does not funktion without teleporting the bullet. So i say we face the problem: Cool looking guns vs realistic guns vs copy-paste decayed guns
Guns design should always be based on the rule of cool.
>>741623806The white and red-black are my favorites, in terms of aesthetic. I just like simplicity. Tubes and boxes. It's why late-era WW1 and WW2 weapons are so nice to me. Material shortages and other difficulties force a new kind of creativity, and that creativity is often "grab a tube and put bullets in it". Love me that shit.
>>741623724best case scenario I suppose is either a gun nut who's into obscure weapons and desperate to showcase it or else a speculative engineer who's putting genuine thought into what the next evolution of weapons could be after firearms in a drastically more advanced culture
>>741623956Unironically, get the kinds of autists that love guns for their mechanics and history equally. Too far into mechanics and you get minmaxy AR/AK shit. Too far into history and you run the risk of getting shit that would make steampunk retards blush. So basically... get based retards like the Keltec fuckers. What they make might not be amazing... but at least they're TRYING to experiment and see what works. The spirit of older weapons designers is there, and that spirit is based. Absolute madlads like Maxim get a special mention because the Maxim gun is sexy.
>>741624059>Too far into history and you run the risk of getting shit that would make steampunk retards blush.I for one would greatly enjoy the AU of "EVERYTHING IS CASELESS"
>>741624186I can accept that. Go full gyrojet. I've seen a shitload of videos of how those things work and it's fucking awesome. In fact, that is something I'd like to see more in fictional weapon design. >>741624298as with everything, if you start from a solid concept, even if it's somewhat unlikely, and then work from this outwards designing your world as if done by reasonable people who internalized the initial concept, you generally get designs that feel rightit's only when you just start adding random things that it gets weird, either due to lack of focus personally or else due to a too many cooks scenario
>>741623907agree with this logic. but back in the day the "attachment disease" was not yet stong so all guns look like boxes for one job and one job only.Nowday we can mod a pistol to look like a longberrel gun... for what ever reason.>>741623956dependts on the gameworld.Realistic guns for realistic games but ones you throw in magic clarktech you can go nuts.

Game designers & artists don't want to admit that "future guns" are still gonna look like an M4 or an AK, this brown world is not capable of creating new gun designs that are worth something.

What's /vk/'s opinion on Monster Hunter guns?
>>741635809They're weird shotgun-fired crossbows basically.
>>741633725guns are ultimately simple machines. a car is far more mechanically complex. the gun designs we get in most games show a complete disregard for understanding how they work on even the most basic levels, like designing a car with square wheels.
>>741635856You see a sabot fly off rounds in the older games so they're actually APFSDS roundsmade of seeds that just happen to be shaped like a bullet
>>741635809Still upset Rey Dau only got a light bowgun and no heavy
>>741636004chemical propellant firearms are "simple machines" because first and foremost they need to be able to withstand the explosion require to propel a lump of lead out of the barrel and through the air. simplicity means fewer points of failure. if a "gun" is generating, rather than merely containing and directing, a force, it stands to reason parts can be more complicated due to how they won't be subject to said forces.
>>741635809Actually booted up MonHun just to see more accurately. As suspected, it really depends on which specific bowgun you build. Some have a literal bow string blocking the gun action. Some LOOK functional but it's hard to tell because it's covered in monster bits. I doubt the devs thought too hard about it beyond "make it gun shaped". And that's fine. That bit aside, I do personally hate how there's no ejection port on most of the bowguns even though casings got shout out.

Fact: The type of people that cry about games not being fun anymore are the same type of people that cry about video game guns being unrealistic
Quite a few games feature "what if this were mass produced" version of real life prototype weapons. But what I'd like to see is prototype weapons that were complete and total failures but the devs speculate what it would be like if it were functional. We don't see that quite as often. Shit like the SIG AK53. Forward operating. The biggest springs I've seen in my life. A magazine that needs to be pried open. This kind of thing is rife for developers to dig into, even if they know nothing about how firearms function. It's already ridiculous, so more can't hurt.

You can't have a realistic sci-fi gunIf it was realistic and believably workable, it would have already been made irlThen it wouldn't be sci fi anymore. The gun has for all intents and purposes been solved. There is no more real improvement to be made aside from aesthetic.

>>741665632Then you defeat the purpose of the thread. Since laser / directed energy weapons are not functionally real, there is no "realistic" usable one to compare a fictional one to. And no, some gimmick green laser shit some retard glued together in his garage to set solo cups on fire for youtube is not a usable energy weapon, and the military has not developed any realistic handheld energy weapons either or they would be standard issue by now.
Genuine questions to ask if you guys don’t mind answering. So I think guns look cool and will eventually learn about them for stuff like art and maybe my own games. But on that note, seeing how guns have their own trademarks, copyrights, etc. how exactly does one make guns, add guns, especially those based off irl guns without getting in trouble? How do people handle that and get around it? Is there like public domain for that stuff. Would like to know for the future

>>741666278Yes. We already invented the best rock thrower, it is called a gun. And it is not sci fi. Any science fiction gun you think of is either going to be unrealistic and never function in reality, or will be objectively worse than a real gun. Because if it was realistic and better than a gun, we would have already replaced guns with it.
>>741666842you forgot the part where your weapon was always mass produced by the lowest bidder.
>>741666127>What gay shit is this?Heck and Kock being a bunch of smallhat wearing boomers abusing the copyright system. Gaming used to be an irrelevant industry back in the old days before they started surpassing music and hollyjew. Same mentality that the car industry employs for time limitations. It's why Forza has a shelf life of around five years before they get taken off the front. Just like every other company under the current economic model. They need to squeeze blood out of a stone to justify their continued existence Lest the shareholders decide to give them the old yella treatment. Even the basic silhouette of the MP5 and its variations are subject to this concept. You draw or fuck with it in any way and they start crying for intervention.
>>741667265I recall reading that there is a legal fallacy where if a military formerly adopts and designates a weapon, the manufacturer cannot sue you as long as you don't mention their name or use their name for the weaponso Knights Armament could sue you if you call it an SR-25 but not an M110the MP5 is unfortunate in this case, because both H&K and the German military call it MP5, but something like the HK416 you can just call it an M27 and H&K can't do shit
One thing that surprises me in many sci-fi designs is how tame shotguns end up looking. Many assault rifles look like they are a man portable buzzsaw - the sort thing that can dump ammo at a rate is reserved for modern machine guns. Fancy sniper rifles look like they can shoot over the horizon, pistols look like they would put a hole in an armoured vehicle etc etc but the shotguns just look like they slapped a square frame over a modern one. I want my fancy sci-fi shotgun to be the sort of weapon that when fired you'd think someone just unleashed a howitzer salvo. The sort of weapon that turns anyone caught down the sights into salsa.
>>741621937and that's why Aliens has god-tier sci-fi gun designs.
>>741666842Guns and munitions in general are still hardcapped by basic logistics. The moment someone develops a weapon system that can effectively remove multiple steps out of that chain via self replicating energy is the next viable vector. Providing they can stand the rigors of use while having an ease of manufacturing in regards to distribution and costs. You are having a similar thing playing out now with the all of the multi million dollar missilespam launchers trying to find ways in lowering the burdens. The nips want to employ scaled down, quick firing railguns and burgers are experimenting with lasers and microwaves to fuck with the onboard targeting and guidance. By comparison the chinks and vodkanigs want to use missiles that fly even faster to outrun the countermeasures. The moment you can have something like a solar powered gun that can swap out auxiliary batteries while still hitting like a 5.56 you would be hard pressed to not consider that. Might not be a total shift but one that's dolled out in waves similar to how the years between 1871 - 1915 went. Still running blackpowder single shots like a Martini Henry alongside smokeless semi autos and eventually full automatics. It's not like someone will ever go back to employing smoothbores on mass again because you can cultivate the powder from saltpeter and sulfur while casting the balls in a homemade forge. There has to be a decent advantage across multiple fronts for the jump to be truly worthy of pivoting towards.
