Without a doubt will be one of the best puzzle games of all time. Never felt like I encountered the same puzzle twice or the same solution twice. Plenty of aha moments which were fun to discover. Was a bit on the easy side, I was only ever stuck for about 30 minutes on some levels, but I imagine the really hard puzzles are going to be later in the game.Aesthetics and music were kino, writing could use some work but otherwise a really wonderful experience.
Puzzles were fun and uniqueVisuals were beautifulI didn't really pay attention to the story but I'm sure it's gonna suckPerformance was underwhelming but didn't bother me
>>741629343>leaves steamAny pirated versions?
>>741629343>>puzzle/playtimeAll, 7.5 hours.>>your opinion on the game/demoGreat, but needs polish.
Gave up after I went westThe mine felt like it threw too many concepts at me at once and I didn't care for how it suddenly wasn't a one-screen puzzle
>>741629343what does that mean, is it time gate or just the download?
>>741632570>I didn't care for how it suddenly wasn't a one-screen puzzleSouth is also not a one screen puzzle, but in a slightly different way.
>>741632674Most devs choose to close their demos after the Next Fest ends, including Blow. You won't be able to launch the game again since the license won't work. Which is why I have launched all of the demos that I wanted to check out, because I doubt Steam will shut then down.
>>741629343I solved everything in about 9h, can't be bothered getting the screenshot or booting up the game. This has been my most anticipated game for years, and still is. Great puzzle design, great graphics, not so great writing and performance. I have faith the problems with the demo will be fixed
I liked the game.
>>741630797I tried a steam emulator with it earlier and it worked fine. I can't be certain it will still be fine after the demo ends but I'd recommend copying the game out of your Steam folder
>Make 4 games in 1>Only really like 2 of them>Hate the mirror oneIt's a big gamble putting multiple games in one because unless people like all 4 of them they won't buy it because they don't want to suffer for 100 hours doing shit they hate in a 500 hours long puzzle game.So yea I'm not even going to bother pirating it, let alone buy it.Also the controls and performance are dogshit, who the fuck thought it was good enough for a game?
>>741629343The full game is gonna be like $60, right? Or maybe even more?
>>741633076>launch all of themjust start 5 games at the same time and let it running or what?would consider that but I don't need extra heating during those smoldering times.
>>741636381Yes, 3 in my case. And games idling in the menu don't take a lot of power. And I have an AC, anyway.
>>741634870he said it depends how long it took you to beat the demo. if you finish it in the intended time of 5 hours it's $5, but it doubles for every additional hour. you also have to take a test that determines whether you understood the true meaning of the audio logs.
>>741634870Probably less because he said he's trying to appeal to a wider audience not just puzzle fans
>>74163487049€ would be my guess
>>741636698>intended time of 5 hoursYou mean 50? That's how long the demo was supposed to be. Maybe he should punish people who beat it too fast.
>10 years of enginedev autism>the result is a game is a sokoban (the genre that plays fine on terminal at 1-frame per input) that somehow has mediocre controls and nintendo hire this man graphicswhat causes this type of autism? At least the puzzles are good
>>741634870Either 30 or 40 dollars. Anything else is unreasonable.
>>741637660I don't believe it'll be that low. The Witness is $40 and it came out 10 years ago.
>>741637798>I don't believe it'll be that lowWhy? Sure, it took a lot of money to make, but that's not how video game pricing works.>The Witness is $40 and it came out 10 years ago. And? If anything, this reinforces my argument.
>>741637446Originally it was just an example program, but with the years of development, i'm assuming he wanted and needed some income, so he decided to turn it into a real game. And then with his lack of discipline with time and shipping, he let more years pass. And just kinda bloated the level count, and then whoops, now he's out of money and needs a publisher. And whoops again, the publisher wants it to release soon, so now we have to cobble together a demo from this bloated beast of WIP levels.
>>741629423John blow is a FAGGOT
>>741638056I'm curious, are the levels even from him? We know he essentially copied 4 sokoban he liked so how much is from those games and how much are new?
>>741637798i dont know if i would pay more than $40 for a sokobon game... if anything it should be less than the witness
>>741637936The Witness was expensive when it came out and OotSS will probably also be. Blow is already delusional in many ways, I don't think it's unlikely that he'll delude himself into thinking people will pay $60 (or more) for his block pushing game.
>>741638173>how much are new? Some were in the demo, some originals are heavily changed. Probably the majority of complete OC are mid-end game ones along with the various other designers. I know he also didn't adapt various original levels.
>>741638173he hired a lot of other designers to do the design. off the top of my head i know patrick traynor, mark ten bosch, and jack lance designed some of them.
>>741638547Ah so if I liked the design then I probably should praise those guys instead of Blow
>>741633076Only a few devs do this, most demos remain active for a while
It was a lot more fun to play than I thought it would be from the preview videos. And making progress exploring the overworld was a bit addictive
>>741638640HOWEVER I must admit I didn't like the mirror puzzles very much
>leaves steamWhat the fuck are you talking about? I've been holding off from playing it because I've been busy. If I add it to my library am I good?
>>741638365He did a podcast the other day where he was asked this question and seemed pretty lucid and realistic, he also has a publisher now
I hate to criticize Blow, because I agree with his design instincts mostly, but he has the worst taste in voice actors. The woman who reads from the opening of Paradise Lost in the beginning is really painful to listen to. The Witness had this problem too.
>>741638796Steam steals demos from you, copy the files out of steamapps and replace steam_api64.dll with this https://github.com/Detanup01/gbe_fork/releases/
>>741638938I think it's mostly just the content. The british woman is a little annoying, but all his other voices are great. The Thief lady especially salvages a lot of his writing.
>>741629343After all these years, John Blow can't still fully understand what fun is. His own idea of fun is the pure "lab rat fun", which is his own demise. He cant understand for example, how fun is the scene from the pic related. He always delivers a game with endless dry brainteasers, but with no good "sauce" to go with. And by sauce, I mean some motive to get me to solve his ever increasing in difficulty puzzles. Something like cool characters, cool moments, some good plot, or some bonkers concept that looks rewarding to my eyes would really elevate his games. However, for John Blow, its just pure logic based puzzles, some okay graphics and some lukewarm plot to keep you invested. I guess its just how he thinks as an individual. He is too logical.I grew tired of playing Braid, and I dropped The witness for these reasons. On the other hand, I have finished the Talos principle and enjoyed it, because you were having that back and forth with "GOD" and Milton and the philosophical concepts presented there. Im feeling that this sokoban game will be on the same tune, so Im barely interested in it
>>741629343Well this game is going to be an instant buy for me, it's a pretty fun game, I really dig the characters and story, the puzzles are also okThe hardest puzzle was the wizard x mirrornigga, fuck that shit
>>741629343Where is this level from? I played 105 levels in the demo

>>741640492>We want games that reward meaningful interactionsBesides Baba and small parts of View Finder, you won't find these in most other puzzle games.>not just mini-movies punctuated by occasional button-mashing.You're right, we should have 20 minute back to back audio logs and monotonous puzzles where you have to tediously drag a boulder to the four corners of a room because Blow thinks it's funny
>>741639473He understands why you find games like that fun better than you do, ESL-kun. Blow has a lot to say about game design trends. It's not an issue that he's making something different, a lot of people liked The Witness anyway. Talos Principle's (ESL) writing was awful btw, although OotSS isn't much better thusfar.

>>741641610>catered to by AAA game studiosPlease link recently made AAA games similar to MGR
>>741640265Yeah, thats the oxymoron with JBlow, but the answer is that he likes creating stuff. The problem is that he creates stuff for his own selfish reasons. He always creates them from the perspective of a creator, and barely considers the perspective of the gamer who is going to play it. If you want a successful game, you need to consider both perspectives. This game is going to be another niche release that wont make its money back.>>741640492 Im not arguing against JBlow's formula, Im saying that he usually rewards players with new puzzles and new tools every time they solve a puzzle. That sequence gets boring after a while and the progress feels dry. For example, let me solve some puzzle to get parts to make a cannon to stop a dragon, or to build a house or to save and romance a princess idk.>>741641045>He understands why you find games like that fun better than you doThats debatable.>a lot of people liked The Witness anywaylmao>Talos Principle's (ESL) writing was awful btwCompared to Braid and the Witness? Definitely better. The interactions with the computer were the fun part of it anyways.>>741641094>factorioFactorio and minecraft are all about giving the players their tools to create solutions to their original problems. >>741638056>but with the years of development, i'm assuming he wanted and needed some income, so he decided to turn it into a real game. Not exactly. Blow often says that the game's size is a consequence of a "combinatoric explosion". He wanted to do justice to all the ways the mechanics could be combined and explored, and ended up with 1000+ puzzles.>>741638173Many more, but there are other designers, too. Patrick from Patrick's Parabox, Miegakure guy, that guy who also helped with The Witness and then killed himself, and probably more.

I loved Braid and The Witness. Wasn't feeling this one at first, especially with the heavy narration, but eventually got into it and had a lot of fun.
>>741641959>Compared to Braid and the Witness? Definitely better. The interactions with the computer were the fun part of it anyways. You can't even write English yourself, why are you insisting to fluent English speakers that you're able to tell whether or not a video game is well written? >>741647045Yes and its sequel, the story was superficial pseud garbage far more pretentious than anything Blow ever did. Having the player literally talk to a character named God and dumping a bunch of random historical references you found on Wikipedia is subtle gamer philosophy theming but adding optional audio logs with direct attribution is cringe, apparently. The only part I liked a lot about Talos was the bonus star puzzles which let you carry objects out of bounds, but they gutted that in the sequel by making the levels too large, and also injected more horrible writing and obnoxious characters for the fans like you who inexplicably praised the writing of first game.

Very fun, would recommend.Crossover puzzle was the only one that gave me a real "oh shit!" moment when it started and an "aha" moment when I got it, so it makes me kinda worried there's not gonna be too many of them in the full game. So, unless you want to have an actual conversation with me about how am I wrong, I will give no more (You)s to your retarded ass
>>741652235Even if the dev streams didn't spoil what the south area is going to look and play like, it's already known and frequently restated that, outside of the crossover puzzles, which are 90% of the game, Order of the Sinking Star is an a higher budget anthology of 4 free Sokoban games. North - Heroes of Sokoban, east - Mirror Isles, west - Promesst, and south - Skipping Stones to lonely homes. If you want, you can just look up the latter and give yourself an in-depth preview of the south area.

Welp 6 more puzzles left to go, I'm gonna say my favorite was actually the mirror isle even though it's also arguable most annoying. The difficulty is just right. Other two zones are mostly introductory level difficulty. The concepts are all cool but too many levels are an instant solve or close.
>>741634870>>741637660They'll price it at around $25 and count on at least one or two million sales to make profit. Asking any more for a 2.5D block pusher filters out basically everyone but core gamers and puzzle fans who already know what they're in for.Since OotSS is not some small scale budget production with niche appeal where you pay to "support the creator" the publisher will want to go for affordability and widest reach. Finally beat the 105 levelsSome of the latter levels were quite challenging.I don't think I'll love this more than The Witness, simply because it was such a comfy game, while this one feels cluttered (due to the nature of square grids). But it is still my most hyped game

>>741663719I personally think it's just going to be an issue that gets fixed with more difficulty later down the line.I really want to see what they do with the little interactions you find across the demo, like (spoiler for if you believe finding the interactions as spoilers) How the lute character can *sort of* ride on rocks she's posessing, or how characters don't techically die while stepping out of a green laser onto terrain, so you could perhaps "burrow" by continously moving the laser and a character inside of a wall, or whatever is going to end up happening when you combine mirrors with any of the other mechanics. Rant copied from another thread, but that one died fast so whatever.I bet if you put a mirror in front of a Promise laser, it probably turns the laser! And I saw a half-mirror (both reflects and lets light through for a total of 2 beams) somewhere in the preview shots, so I could imagine that combinations of those could get wacky fast. One of the best feelings in a puzzle game is getting to watch all the little interactions you theorized about getting used in actual levels, and I feel like this game has a *lot* of that in store.

I only really liked the mirror one, but if I stick to that one in this 'pseudo-anthology', will I be cut off from endgame content and the meta twist of the game (whatever that may be)?
>>741664375>>741664506What’s clever about it? I think the overworld is dumb.
>>741657428the only issues I had with the mirrors is the merging puzzle. I figured that you have to put one character at both ends of the mirror, but not that the distance of the characters to the mirror and the distance between the two mirrors has to be the same.It doesn't feel quite right how double mirrors carry over distance
Fucking hell this one took me like 20 minutes.
>>741629343I'll wait for the final version.I saw some screenshots where it looks like there are two different puzzles on the same screen. Is this just promotional material, meant to show different environments, or does the game actually work that way, with puzzles right next to each other?
Are there any original heroes or are they all from the Heroes of Sokobon games?
>>741669419The split-screen effect? Yeah, some of the later puzzles work that way, as the puzzles begin combining the mechanics from the different worlds.
>>741629343>>puzzle/playtimeN/A>>your opinion on the game/demoVery much looking forward to playing blind once it releases
Okay, this is the first puzzle I thought was clever.
Why does Blow always have to ruin his games with “clever” ideas that don’t work. This should have been Heroes of Sokobon 4. The light and mirror puzzles are lame! Mixing up puzzles is lame! The overworld is tedious and ugly. Just make a game that doesn’t suck!
wait, when is it leaving? I can still play it even though next fest ended at 10 AM PST. How do I see my completed count?
