I literally just opened up steam and saw the price tag for it

If I was a rich fag with no worries or concerns, I would probably get one. But I'm not so pass. I already have a steam deck, ps5 pro, and a 9060xt PC. I may get the 5800x3d re release but that's it. What the fuck do I need more for?
>>
>>741639304
For this package, when you compare it to other devices, yes it is.
>somewhat less powerful than a base PS5
>no controller
>about 400 GB less storage
>costs $400 more than it

There's obviously a lot of value in it being a PC and not locked down to a walled garden of software, but it's still a relatively tough sell

okay, but can you play games with only a gpu lying in your bedroom? You need the rest of parts to build a pc. And even if you spend the absolute minimum to build a pc with Steam machine's specs, it will end up costing around the same price. If you want to actually play vidya you gonna have to bite the bullet and pay 2+k to build a decent one. Steam machine is competing mini pcs, not actual pcs and consoles, and its probably losing there as well, because you can find cheaper mini pcs in the market

>>
>>741643827
>>741643940

Okay let's take a very mid range GPU that you can actually buy, an RX 9060 XT with 8GB VRAM.
That's $290
i5 13400F for the CPU, that's $189
We'll go cheap on the mobo, ASRock B760M Steel, $140
We're at $519 so far
We don't care about the case so let's just set a budget of $150 for whatever's cool, so we just need RAM and storage to match the Steam Machine
2TB NVME... we'll go with a shitty WD Green SN350 at $249.
and then for RAM we'll get some Kingston FURY Beast at $307.
So we have a lovely total of $1225

Still cheaper than the Steam Machine.

They built it using the steam survey metrics. So if 80% of gamers are playing farmville on their 2015 laptop, then that means steam machine targeting that is good enough. That's why they went with 8gb vram, 1080p performance.

It was never going to be a computer for enthusiasts, but a cheap alternative to a console. HOWEVER, with AI fucking up the market, it's no longer a cheap or even comparable alternative to a console.

That leaves the market segment that just wanted an entertainment computer that's prebuilt and JUST WERKS which is also not a huge market at this price level.

So we're actually back to Steam/Linux enthusiasts being the people who will buy this and play their old autism games and claim it's just fine because it works on their machine.

The side story of how Snoy and MicroSlop is taking a bath on every console they sell because of the upstream costs is not being advertised widely. It could conceivably kill the market or make one similar to corona used cars when 5 year old consoles are suddenly worth twice what you paid.

>overpriced
Not by enough to matter. It would have been called the "Valve tax" or something and people would have gotten over it because it can 'do more' (ie. it's an actual computer not just a goybox).
The current gulf in pricing is mainly due to console makers not adjusting their margins, the ratio should be equivalent. They just choose to keep the pricetag low and pray people pay for more games down the road (itself risky for a generation of consoles nearing end of life).
Though who knows what knock on effects this will have. Both Snoy and MicroSlop have consoles coming out next year (or so), but I strongly suspect they won't want to take the haircut to keep prices low when the most sales will happen. So either a shock price raising will happen (where people will start to say "maybe the Gabe-box wasn't so bad), or (my bet) delays of years.

The only thing you can really argue is that it's using a standard tower case whereas the steam machine fits on your shelf. The argument I've seen in other threads and on reddit is that you can throw it in your backpack and bring it over to a friend's house. But that's a super niche case imo since anyone is going to game online with their friends and if you REALLY have to game in person a steam deck with dock makes more sense. >>
>>741665434
i'm making an argument against consoles, not for the steam machine
the fact is that the machine has 3x the gpu performance so the game doesn't need to be fucking babysat into working at all, it can use existing settings
if you were to build a pc yourself you could match the ps5 pro's performance and get a pc that has 5x the gpu performance
>>
>>741665434
The base model is a massive trap. 512GB is not enough for a gaming system. Even without the windows overhead hax (steamos was about 20GB last I checked), you can fit like 2-3 games modern games max on it. I have a laptop with 200 GB and find myself having to constantly uninstall games as I cycle through them. It's an inconvenience no one really talks about. You will want the $1500 version at minimum.
>>
>>741665554
What local multiplayer game are you bringing over to a friend's house that can't run on the steam deck but on the steam machine? Like I guess I can see it if you want to play stuff like MHW in person with your buddies, but that's a niche within a niche within a niche haha

It is worse, the current major sticker prices actually went above the amount of money you can have on steam due to their dog shit dyanmic pricing system, meaning you couldn't even buy it, they've since capped it at 170,000 tokens which equals USD$1700, yes that's right Valve is currently selling stickers in their in-game item shop in CS2 for USD$1700
