>>741643069
>>741643069Why because valve is retarded? Hows that gonna kill the linux desktop for me. Is mine going to explode?
If that happened you'd be fucked by Microsoft again, I don't know why you'd ever wish for less competition.
tech literate people usually prefer linux so idk why indians love windows so much
>>741643069Oh yeah did we got so many less steam hardware survey threads ever since the last one had linux % shrink again.
>>741643245>Hows that gonna kill the linux desktop for meThe cube is going to flop horribly. The rising hardware costs will make Valve abandon all hardware products, and in turn abandon their linux and proton development, meaning we have to go back to wine hell, quickly getting outdated with new unplayable games.
>>741643409Okay but how does that affect me? I dont care about the gabecube and I personally think valve is a detrimental element of linux gayming

>>741645190That was to be expected. Was there any news about SteamOS being made functional and available for regular desktops?
>>741643069it was never alive, the fact that sloptubers like linus and nexus goy tried to shill this piece of shit so hard but stopped using it immediately proves that it was all a massive shill campaign to get people to buy the Steam deck and machine because SteamOS is linux. >>741646224normgroid npcs are incapable of using critical thinking to realize the os dominance charts are fake and linux has been dominating since its inception. they just happen to print a million more networked windows that get opened maybe once in a university basement.
>>741643069Why?You don't need the SteamOS, any Linux distro released semi-recently can run games just fine.
>>741646432Linux commies like Stallman are a dying breed, any success that Linux achieved in the last few years is due to bit corporations putting in money to make a functional server and then a functional desktop.Look at the sponsors for any big project needed for the OS and you'll see that Linux got serious corporate backing.
>>741648161you're retarded it has worked since 93 and everything professional is run on it
>>741648242Server side? Yeah, and corporations like Red Hat put serious work to have a functional Unix-like system without jumping the hopes of actual Unix. Desktop? Hit and miss until Ubuntu made it usable to normal people (non-programmers).
>>741648536It's more all of its competitors immolating.Windows is clearly on an unending arc to get worse and consoles have no reason to exist. Phones are also getting worse and even more locked down. Linux is better than it used to be but it still wouldn't be worth looking at except that everything else is fucked
>>741650131There are literally zero big games that are developed on PC for Windows first and Microsoft, Apple, and Google fighting for control of user operating systems in school/workplaces is going due forever. Keep Linux being a niche option only bored enthusiasts use. I know we've been in "two more weeks until the collapse of Windows" mode for the past 15 years, but even now the average person isn't that opinionated about copilot and AI as the typical YouTube tranny.
>>741650131Linux is fine as an OS and the base was solid (behind the scenes it's unix-like and resembles macOS), but ot has three big issues: overreliance on terminal (puts normal people off), app packaging issues and lack of corporate software support. The first one was mostly corrected by having things like KDE discover or Gnome apps for software and DE's allowing most common user interactions through a GUI. The second one is a work in progress but Flatpacks and Flathub are getting there. The third one can't be fixed except if corporations start porting to Linux, and that's why Proton is so important, because it shows people they can have a functional desktop without sucking Microsoft's salty balls. The only thing really holding Linux back is the lack of a drop-in replacement for MS Office.
>>741651064packaging has gotten worse as it tries to get better. meme related will always be true.

>>741645017Valve and Proton are pretty much the only thing keeping Linux gaming afloat at this point. If Proton goes down, it may likely cause a new dark age for Linux gaming.
>>741652871>general purpose Distro. but that's what it already is, it's obviously not going to be an enthusiast distro>People will move to Linux when all the software they want has either works or has quality alternatives.and no one on linux is at fault for this
>>741652694Corpos already use Ubuntu
>>741653082Ubuntu is Windows for contrarianfags.
>>741650424Eh. PCs in general are a platform for bored enthusiasts and increasingly so. Many people never used a windows machine at home, it's just a thing for office work, increasingly drifting away from what people personally use. I don't think MS will ever lose its office stranglehold but the rest isn't clear. There is a cutoff point where enough enthusiasts switch where it's actually easier to run obscure modpacks on linux, that's all it takes for it to be mostly over imo. We aren't there yet, but it's not impossible, the herd doesn't matter much for this point. Case in point, mobile gaming is much larger by numbers but it might as well be dark matter, people with taste can simply ignore it.
>>741653041It's not. It's a gaming first, console like experience. Using SteamOS today as anything else other than a gaming device is shooting yourself in the foot.
1k is not that bad price considering what Valve has to do in order to produce this, I honestly was expecting worse.I might even predict the price going up soon since things aren't improving with the DRAM situation.
>>741643069microsoft and faceberg orchestrated the ram shortage to kill the steam machine & frame and delay the year of the linux desktop/vr goggles inshallah
>>741652981>If Proton goes down, it may likely cause a new dark age for Linux gaming.Wine is still a thing althougheverbeitly.so long as CodeWeavers stay active I see no reason for gaming to stagnate. We may have to move away from proton, but that just means running all games through Wine-GE, which functionally works the same as ProtonGE.

I tried to run Linux Bottles to play Dark Souls ptd. It was made steamless. It was a disaster. It nor runs after lots of work put into it. I still can't play the intros because it freezes my game. Bottles also doesn't recognize my controller under games but it recognizes it when I just use an application. I think it would have been easier just emulating Windows 7 or just use the Windows 11 to play it that I still have on the PC.
>>741645886Sadly?

>>741653904wtf is linux bottles lol
>>741653509One of the benefits of Proton is the effortless Steam integration, you can simply click play and it will run painlessly. Without it, people will likely have to resort primarily to deeper manual configuration and figure out prefixes and things to even get things working and that might turn off a lot of people.
>>741653904Did you try Lutris? There's also Faugus but I haven't tried that. You also have to choose a runner like a version of proton(GE, DW, regular proton). Don't play on Mint. I had framepacing issues on Mint but everything works fine on CachyOS.
>>741654060Removal from the Linux Steam client, likely.
>>741653904Bottles is a meme, its only advantage is the ability to contain apps you don't trust, but even then I wouldn't want to rely on that. >>741643069>and this is the moment the linux desktop diesYour reasoning?Valve makes their money by being a platform first and foremost, and Proton/Linux development is just a step to ensure that they can continue to be the platform they want to be away from any of Microsoft/globalist bullshit. The steam machine isn't subsidized, so they won't be eating enough shit for them to fail as a company no matter how hard it flops. Besides, a good chunk of the price of those machines are the memory and storage, so the hardware is still worth at least that. They also aren't a publicly traded company, so they don't have to play by the same rules (immediate shareholder value at the expense of everything else).>>741645886Valve knows the steam machine has a pricing issue, which is due to the price of components. This is completely unrelated to people's perception of Linux nor its future. Microsoft has intended for Windows to be a cloud-based "software as a service" product for a long time. With Linux you know you're not supporting someone who intends to own your hardware that you've already bought, and has repeatedly been telling you so for the past decade.Fucking OneDrive being forced everywhere is just the start of it.
>>741656229the 100$ controller is a pro controller with more features and half the price of other pro controllers, while also being more repairable and durable. so yeah i think valve is being pretty nice selling that controller for only 100 dollars considering the market for a product like that.>but just buy this 25 dollar 8-bit-do controller that will crap out after a couple months of usehow about no
>>741677797>>now crashingAnother way to look at that chart is to take into the effect Steam Deck has had on it. My interpretation is that the Steam Deck contributed to the spike and crash (as people generally get tired of handhold after a while as they do with other consoles, them being limited in utility other than gaming), but that overall, Linux market share apart from the Steam Deck has been steadily increasing.Linux is so easy to run even a retard like me was able to install it and do all the daily tasks just fine and the vast majority of my hobbies just fine (Linux Mint).
