Stop dreaming about making a video game and do it

Nigga you don't understand. For my entire adult life I have dreamed of making video games, I have design documents and notes and endless iterations and refinements of ideas I've crafted over the years. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, I was meant to make game, even though I take to learning code like a fish takes to motor oil. But it isn't the learning prospect that stays my hand, it's the terror of what happens if it doesn't work out. This dream has stayed with me for as long as I can remember, and if I put my heart and soul into a game only for it to languish in obscurity, it will actually kill me. The thought of my dream stories amounting to a wet fart that no one cares about genuinely depresses me, and if it came to pass I would unironically kill myself. To spare myself that pain, I procrastinate. It hurts that I have no game after all this time, but it's the lesser of the pains at this point.

I have some breed of terminal retardation that makes it so I can only program vidya in spreadsheets, which means all I can do is mod Diablo 2. The idea of programming RPGs in anything but a spreadsheet is so absurd to me that I cannot do it. If someone made an engine based on Diablo 2's spreadsheet softcoding with less hardcoded jank, then I'd make some vidya, starting by softcoding and opensourcing the entirety of Diablo 2, but I'll die first.

the hard truth of gamemaking is that for vast majority of proper devs who tried their hand at it the end result wasn't really the point. coming in everyday to ply your craft for the team and to be rewarded with camaraderie(and money), that was 90% what they got out of it. the finished game is more like a graduation party.
doing that alone, with no gold in the pot till the very end, it takes a very dedicated creative to stick with that, not for the faint of spirit. even kojima got to shoot the shit with the boys everyday besides having all the technical minutia taken care of for him.
>>
>>741660685

Play old games first. From early 2000s and 1990s
>>
>>741657759
Me but with a webcomic. I'm a decent artist but looking at the young artists that publish their cartoons and comics demoralizes me since they started young and still have this youthful vigor... And also an audience that they've built since they were teens... And also they finished an art school... And also probably have parents who support them... Well, nevermind.
What I'm trying to say is that I'm a 28 yo unc, a have-been, an old geezer. Alex Ross worked on Kingdom Come when he was younger than me. I can't imagine starting now, especially since I have a full time job and all.
Sometimes the right thing to do is to throw in a towel and admit that you are a mediocrity and not a creative at all. Talent is real, and so is neuroplasticity.

Keep it up, anon! You can do this!
>>
>>741659789
I don't know if this is serious or not. Either way, don't be gay, Anon.
Negative criticism only affects you the first few times. After that, you get used to it and even start to have fun when you see some angry Anons bashing your game.
Human beings can get used to anything. There are parents who've lost children and still move o, so it's not going to be some criticism (usually from some completely retarded guy) that's going to destroy a person.
And yeah, it doesn't feel good at first. Sometimes you'll even lose sleep wondering what you did wrong, but just pick yourself up the next day and keep working.

I tried to get in to it, and discovered that every aspect of it was learnable and enjoyable other than visual art. I just don't enjoy 3D modeling enough to spend such a vast amount of time on it, and 2D art is arcane bullshit that no one in all of human history seems to have managed to explain very well.
>>
>>741662701
I agree, but that's the thing. It isn't negative criticism that I am afraid of, because at least then people are talking about my games and I can learn for the future. It's a total indifference to my work that worries me, that my hard work is neither praised nor damned, just completely ignored and written off as just another unimportant game in the ever-growing pile of forgettable vidya.
>>
only marketing matters
you can waste 10 years hand crafting your soulful dream masterpiece and 5 people will play it and leave negative reviews because they get filtered by the first puzzle or something and when you recommend it to people they'll just fluoride stare at you
then some random piece of crap made in 1 week in unity will somehow go viral because one unfunny streamer shilled it to his retarded kid audience

For games made by one or two people you have to search for NES, SNES and PC Engine titles. Also browser games obviously.

>>
>>741666393

>>
>>741667197
Every single game in existence is derivative, but don't let that stop you.
>>
>>741665943
>only marketing matters
That's not entirely true.
I've had a Patreon for many years, and I recently surpassed 10,000 followers (the vast majority of whom don’t pay me anything, otherwise I'd be rich by now). My marketing strategy consists of doing absolutely nothing: I don't post on any social media, I don't have a YouTube channel, and so on.
In fact, I have no idea how 10,000 people around the world found me.
>>
Unironically what's a good 3D engine and language for a total newb? Also how much code is already available online for "basic" shit like physics engines or mechanics present in a bunch of games like jumping?
>>
>>741657759
I want to, but people are going to hate it because I used AI for coding and textures.
>>
>>741657759
ive tried making games multiple times but it turns out you need to have extreme talent in multiple fields to do that. just coding doesnt work because you need art assets. and then you need music too. if you lack in any of these areas nobody will play your game because there are 99999999 games being made per minute.
>>
>>741658005
doesnt AI can code your game for you pretty much?
>>
>>741657759

>>
>>741658292

>>
>>741666579
Suno I would never recommend, literally zero control and the results are giga generic. For coding you can pretty much use any major chat out there. For art I don't really know, but I hear doing it locally gives you more control over the result.
>>
>>741666393
you can spend time to learn one of those skills instead of jerking off penises
>>
>>741658005
Coding is not even hard. Especially easy for making video games. You have just never tried it and most tutorials are just awful.
Video game coding is basically just math. And not hard math, pretty much 5th grade math. Lol.
>>
>>741660030
Have you played it? Reminder: you MUST.
>>
>>741657759
Not gonna work. Even if you had an idea and could code how you are going to do stuff like music and art? You have three options.
1. Do it yourself and delay things and it will still be shit
2. Hire someone and drain your game's budget before you have a single sale and that's the best case scenario
3. Use AI for a few things and sent to the AI leper colony where Indian asset flips are

You're in the right place cause your average /v/edditor is like that too.
>>
>>741670851
You can look for some royalty-free music. Astlibra is made with music like that, and people like it.
Art depends on what you're trying to do. If your goal is to make an artistic game but you don't know how to create anything, then it's impossible. But you can get away with ugly visuals if you make up for it in other areas. One easy area to make up for is writing. Good characters and storytelling can make people grow attached even to stick figures...

dont get hung up on the idea that for something to be impressive creatively it needs to be a completely new idea. A lot of hack writers fall into that trap and are so focused on trying to subvert expectations they forget to write a good story. Same thing with games, the creative process where you make an idea work is the impressive part, more so than the idea itself. Take a game like palworld where its basically just "Pokemon if open world and had guns", the idea itself sounds basic and stupid but designing an actual game around it is the creative part.

Don't listen to Ai, it's infested with the woke virus. Say anything insulting about a group of people and it will lecture you.

I had an idea for a game back when I was 9, because they announced a game I was interested for an IP I liked. I assumed the game would play a certain way to be more like the TV show but it was something completely different. No one has made a game like my idea yet and I have been thinking of it off and on for a while.

You don't have to abandon it entirely just add it your own flavor with something not so obvious, like the baiolenja dev who decided to throw some bionicle style robots just because, and it works. Good luck with your game anon.

Welp, after exploring numerous concepts, I finally settled on the concept of my game: a tavern builder game. Beneath is the first scene.

The character portrait has some issues, which I will correct today or tomorrow. At the moment, AI portraits, AI voice, because I needed to test this concept and I am not going to spend 10k on an idea that does not work. If affordable, I want to replace those AI placeholders, but we will see. For now, it does the trick. Anything 3D models are done by artists.

Never stop believing.

I'm trying, but it's hard to stay motivated with how oversaturated the indie scene has become and all the AI shit being pumped out.

This has potential. The mood of the environment is definitely the best part. Have you considered zooming in on the character models instead of 2D portraits?

Thank you!

The character models have automated lip synching and there is a third person mode. See youtube link below.

I could go for render textures i.e. a camera pointed at the 3D models for the dialogue portraits, but it does not have the same charm, if you ask me. See screenshot for that.

I've had a lot of fun blocking out levels but now that I need to make the assets to replace the grey boxes I'm faced with nothing but PS1 slop tutorials and the Blender donut tutorial that basically didn't teach me anything.

too much of a dreamer unfortunately.

Suno can be fucking insane if you throw your own DAW rough drafts at it. Too bad it always fucks up so many minor details and wants to mangle melodies half the time. Fuck ever directly using its output but I highly recommend it for reference material and idea farming if you're enough of a shameless goober shithead to sub.

>Can't code
>Can't into art
>Can into music just a bit but not as a real skill
>Can't really into proper writing like in stuff such as Disco Elysium, MGS, or even stuff like UT/DT + I'm ESL
>Got ideas, but that is just a human trait
>Don't have real grasp of proper game design.
And
>Refuse to use AI because I'm a luddite/trans/leftists etc.

So I don't really stand a chance when it comes to vidya market. Even bigger problem is that I don't want to make money with any """art""" that I would create. So that is ideologically against current vidya market and not smart.

I've been using AI art genning for gooning and it's really not that good, can't do shit with it besides CGI stills and even those don't look that good

Every time I think about the amount of effort and time it would go into making a game as a solo dev even if using store bought assets and AI, I just realize it's not worth it, and whatever I make would probably suck anyway.
Also, nobody would play it since I am an asocial aspie with 0 social media presence and I don't even use discord.
So, if I am going to toil for countless hours only to make some shitty broken game that is going to rot on steam alongside "totally not a money laundering op" and "sexy baccarat simulator" I'd rather just do something else.

>>741690215
there's so many non-AI indie games and videos of indies making games in 2 weeks, it surely can't be that hard
>>
>>741690248
But I don't want to make a deck-based roguelite with ironic ms paint graphics and "lore". I'd want to make an actual video game.

>>741668923
I wish there was some AI where you can hum something into it and (through your instructions) it will take care of instrumentation/effects, learning a DAW is a major pain in the ass

Can't you trim the game down a bit to something smaller and more manageable?

It's like any other skill you learn
You do it, you look at where you fucked things up and you try to do it again until you get it right

>>741657839
That's most of the western AAA industry.
>>
>>741660386
No shame in that, most indie games were released by people in their late twenties

As long as you're not paralyzed and mute and blind at the same time you can do it.

Just a matter of why do it.
For money? You're better off with a job (until your games bring bags).
For self creative and logic skill improvement? Yea.
For sending some message/agenda to the world? Sure, if it takes off.
For sense of achievement like any other hobby? Yes.
