If this sells out at launch Steamies are confirmed the same level of mouthbreathing retard as Apple fans.

I think i can afford 30~

>the steam machine is an awful value with incredibly narrow use case
>Been defending it for hours now because the arguments against it are pure retardation
The tech illiteracy on this board is astounding. I totally get not liking the thing but the arguments on here are so off the wall retarded I can't believe it
>>
>>741659056
It will sell out because valve could barely get enough components to produce the first batch of the gabe cube. I don't expect them to have more than 100k units in stock.
>>
>>741659215
what even IS the use-case for the Machine?
even if I was in the market for a gaming mini PC, I'd just buy one of those minisforum ones as their price-to-performance is better, and that's a BIG "if" as I personally feel that mini PCs are retarded.
>>
>>741659056
The really hardcore Gabe cultists are straight up goy cattle on par with hardcore tendies or snoys. The funny part is that they think they’re better than them
>>
>>741659360
So, as far as I can tell, it's the intersection of form factor and TDP. People are glossing over how low it's voltage and power supply is while still performing. Not great, mind you, but if you wanted a tiny little PC that you don't have to worry about it overheating and can still play basically everything that's your guy.
Who wants that is the true question. Nothing micro MTX has ever appeared to me. Like I got a fuck huge tank case and moved with it twice. It's really not a big deal. That said there's entire product lines for mobis, ram, and even graphics cards to be low profile so clearly someone cares about it even if I don't get it at all
All the other options I see are usually a bit bigger or hotter/higher wattage for either lower price or better performance rarely both. Plus Valve makes small batches of even their in demand shit.
It's not going to move units but it's not going to be a failure either. Small product for a small niche.

People making it life or death truly confuse me. Let alone the crazy shit I'm seeing like Switch is more powerful or pretending their subscription services don't exist. One person said "what about the gamepads you're getting with steam? " And I'm still not sure if that was just a very retarded person or what was going on.
>>
>>741659360
It's a PC for consolefags that are too retarded to get into PC gaming.

But again, better options exist if you are genuinely in the market for it. Why should anyone choose the Steam Machine specifically, when it's such a poor value proposition compared to the current market?
Pic very related. These specs smoke it for just a hair more $

>>
>>741660306
Like I said it's either a bit bigger, a bit more expensive, or a bit hotter. I can't generalize what people's cut offs are going to be. This sits neatly in that dumbass market. Not the strongest but not the weakest either. More expensive but not the most expensive.
It's just another product.
I'd bring up the OS too but that always feels disingenuous since you can install stuff other than windows on any of these tiny fucks. Maybe not EVERYONE but I think anyone who'd want such a specific product.
Then again maybe there's an apple adjacent hipster that really doesn't know PCs that'd want this for that. I dunno.

All I'm saying is it's not what I want but I can see it
>>
>>741658896
You would never download a steam machine, would you?

No :'(

that takes me back... I can't believe I was on this shithole when the PS3 was still new holy shit

Ah yeah the consolefags who are too retarded for a windows prebuilt and will have zero issue with steam os and the proton shenanigans.
>>
>>741658896
incredible that this would happen to steam
>>
>>741660957
The steam machine doesn't focus entirely on its specs unlike prebuilts like how it happens in this one >>741660306 , it connects to a TV directly, has a bundle with a controller and, even though I never even touched the steam 'eck or steam OS, I'm pretty sure that shit boots right into the storefront in a way that is completely retard proof, that's at least what I am expecting it to do

It's literally a PC for retarded consolefaggots.
>>
>>741661279
>It's literally a PC for retarded consolefaggots.
at a price that no consolefaggot would ever want to pay upfront, genius!

people who bitch about not affording things are people who don't deserve those things stop raging at wealthy people just because you fucking suck, it's pathetic at this point

Exactly why everyone is laughing at the price, they fucked up the one thing that they shouldn't have fucked up.
It literally appeals to no one anymore.

Scroll to the bottom of any steam page and there's a prominent bluesky link there.
Yep. Steam is for troons.

this is their definitive console though, literally built for the linux troons
>>
>>741659006
You can support valve and still admit their shortcomings. Granted, this one is more the fault of the rise of gen AI than Steam themselves.
>>
uh it's not really a cost issue perse, this is basically what other premade PCs are that sell on market, you can't act like it's competing with a console range of 400-600 in market, this is a different market

>>741660306
but what if you want to spend 1100 not 1400, thats' difference?

$1350 is how much the 2TB steam machine costs. If you don't need it to be a miniPC specifically you could purchase some other prebuilt for less instead

What is shocking about the steam machine is that it is running with single channel memory. Only one SODIMM is populated. So it was intentionally gimped by Valve out of the box.
>>741660306
I have a similar mini PC in my livingroom that I got for about 500 bucks with twice the memory and 8x the SSD capacity but the issue is the 880M in that thing. It is like 70% slower than the 7600M in the Steam Machine. Not really comparable at all. The 7600M is also like 40% faster than the 890M in the Ryzen 370/470 APUs as well.
>>
>>741664243
It's actually more fucked up then that. You got a mystery box chance of 1x16 or 2x8. They literally got whatever ram they could to fill their first models and standardize the numbers.
Even in the interview with Gamer's Nexus they were grim as fuck. Going to the chip makers and getting different prices month to month.
It's probably why it's so expensive. They literally COULDN'T secure a batch deal with ANYONE. Their mobos and the case are probably reduced batch pricing but they're paying the same as we are for the ram
Fucking insane.
Demand must be absolutely cut throat
>>
>>741661679
since when has that stopped them?
they're use to paying twice to use their own internet each month and $70 a pop to watch what amounts to a youtube video

It is insane Valve decided to gamble with the buyer's market prior to announcing the console. Everyone in large scale manufacturing goes through standard procurement procedures except Valve apparently. When my org was building out a new datacenter we had to procure 30TB of memory for a couple of compute clusters and we pinned and signed a deal 14 months prior to deliver of the hardware and installation. When Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft build a new console they order memory 12-24 months prior to production let alone sale. Valve didn't make ANY agreements prior to announcement or even production with the exception of their CPU which they bulk ordered from AMD only 6 months prior to announcement. Which is utter madness. When we ordered 30TB of memory we put in a price clause to allow for 15% fluctuation in memory pricing based on supply positive or negative but you don't have to do that. And we only put 20% down on the order up front but you can sign an agreement with no money down and instead in escrow which is what big companies like Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo do.
How is Valve so grossly incompetent? If they had signed deals a 8-14 months prior to announcement they could have easily hit a 550 dollar MSRP with plenty of profit baked in (without the controller) and agreed to produce 1million units at that price. It is INSANE they were so short sighted. And they were due to GREED. RAM pricing was in a freefall December 2024 and hit rock bottom in August of 2025. So they were likely thinking "if we agree to buy 500k-1mil units now we might be overpaying." And they paid for that greed. Pathetic.

1,300 dollars for 8gb vram

or just pay 400 dollars more and get a refurbsihed premade with 16gb vram from bestbuy or ebay

does not make any sense to me

This is for people who were too stupid to buy pcs when everyone spent 2 years telling them how great AI was. Laugh at them.

>>
>>741665362
Your insane head canon aside valve doesn't produce numbers like that for any of their hardware and they state the price was dictated to them.
This wouldn't be a greed thing on valves part it's due to how much insane demand there is at even crazier prices that there was ZERO OFFER for batch pricing they were offered. If they reported prices changing month to month that means at least two months of production.
Think about that. At least 60 days (and let's be honest it was more) with zero offers, zero deals, and zero contracts.
That's insane.
>>
>>741666740
Even at 100,000 units or 50,000 units, you can easily sign a procurement contract with a vendor in January of 2025 to lock down pricing. It is standard operating procedure. Valve for some reason did not.
>>
>>741659056
Having actual video games might be the main selling point of the steambox
>>
>>741658896
Now that's a vintage meme
>>
The real question is how well does it run? Is it at least better than the Deck?
>>
>>741666740
If Valve didn't ordered a lot of consoles to begin with, literally what's stopping them from selling it at loss just to get people in their ecosystem, like any normal fucking console producer?
