I have no support group, that's it, and I don't mean it in a faggoty way. Every solo dev out there has always had a group of friends who share ideas or playtest their games, I have nobody, I'm alone.
It's fun to develop for oneself, but at some point the depression catches up to you and it manifests as procrastination, so I've just never finished a game project, I just do work that pays instead.

Seriously lack of discipline and work ethic and I really don't know how to fix it. I'm fully aware of my issues, i'm aware to "just do it" and sometimes I do get a burst of motivation but then rapidly become increasingly tired or lazy. I have a lot of ideas, I have a large library of experience to pull from games i've played for inspiration or to iterate on underutilized ideas and I think about game dev stuff constantly yet I can't pull myself up to actually commit long term and work on it.

Being a NEET feels more like a curse than anything. I don't know how to get over the roadblock, it would be easier if I had some disease or something as a legitimate excuse but I don't. It's suffering to know that I have no excuse i'm just being a lazy fucking nigger who can't even fix his sleep schedule let alone create a video game

Why would you want to be a game dev if you're more interested in writing?

Honestly, being a writer for a game might be one of the worst jobs you can get for video games. Not because it's hard or full of menial tasks but because you will have your creativity and ideas stifled constantly because the writing of the game has to fit the gameplay. You could put in a lot of work for a certain part of game and make it connect to this and that later in the game and then it gets cut because the devs decided the level doesn't work.

You basically have to warp your writing entirely around the game and make it super flexible and I imagine doing so just really fucks you over.

I tried to simulate game systems rather than just code them. The playher doesn't care that a fake packet is realistically routed around the game world, i could have just done string matching on ip addresses

solving programming problems was too much fun and actually creating content wasn't as fun to do.

lastly, i had a flash that the "real" way to create the game should be done via instructions to the ai that would then create the game, and my engine should just be a vehicle for the AI to express itself. Now its actually possible and my mom is paying for me to go back to college. we really can have it all, anons. never give up hope <3

Maybe I need to become not necessarily ideas guy but idea refinement guy. I see too many games that come out, especially indies, that just have horribly balanced mechanics or there just isn't enough juice to make their mechanics stand out.

Obviously not every indie game puts importance on that stuff but as an example you can look at all of the slay the spire clones and how the biggest difference is that NONE of them are nearly as well balanced as STS and their ideas might be interesting but they're not fleshed at all and feel like wasted potential. That's what I hate the most actually, wasted potential. I can see how good ideas can be explored to create really interesting stuff but too many shitty indies come out that underutilize great potential or their game is in eternal EA

I like writing regular stories too, but there's a special charm to video game story writing - the player gets to interact with the world in ways that can't be done with traditional storytelling. Even though you control the set pieces and the plot, the player determines the pace, and you can even experiment with telling multiple stories within the same experience via branching paths (though this can easily lead to a poorer overall experience if you aren't committed to ensuring each potential outcome is narratively satisfying). I like thinking about stories through the lens of video games, though admittedly I'd want to be in a total control position of writing everything out - working on a team would probably frustrate me.

I usually take a shortcut and use the latest slop people suggest to make a game. (Godot/Unity/UE/etc various frameworks)
Then I run into performance issues that cannot be resolved due to using a more abstracted fast to produce language or due to what is offered and once again realize I'm probably going to have to cobble together a stack of libraries in C or C++ and give up since I know its going to take forever and be aggravating. I've done it on cycle every other year too.

I feel retarded all the time, people ask me on the spot questions and I give dumb answers and feel like my (coding) solutions were always worse than others.
but by every metric at my old workplace I excelled and they promoted me to tech lead and kept saying how great I was.

I made my first video game a couple of years ago and it was a mild success and has paid for me to make another, I go to gamedev meetups most people there haven't released a game or had any success.

I think I might actually be good at this but I feel like a dumbass all the time.

For me, it's Pacman n Snake. Even Tetris. Those were newb games I'd do so find something you can do or go back to fundamentals. If you use arrays for Snake it's very easy.
I like fundamentals but I get the thought of making a full game in JS, Python, Ckek or just about anything and basically, laziness. It'll become an annoying chore mid-project anyway. Don't feel like it. Plus the decision paralyzis of even picking anything in particular.
