What the fuck were they fucking thinking?

Was anyone really intending to buy this thing in the first place? You know you can just.. hook your PC up to a television via HDMI and play video games that way, right?
>>
who does this?
>>
>>741677918
yes but your pc requires space. You have a massive weird looking nerd ass tower with goon troon rgb lights shit next to your tv that gather dust like a mf. it's fucking ugly.

no fine shyt coming over will let you fuck after seeing that shit ong. Steam Machine on the other hand, it's like a kabaa. It looks slick and sexy.

The price killed it

I'm getting one as a HTPC. I don't want to waste my time scrimping for components or deals when prices are all fucked up, it costs as much as it does because if it was any cheaper, people would just harvest the components. It is a PC, just wildly overpriced with a controller friendly wrapper over the OS. Kinda dumb to get when they announced they’d be releasing the OS soon too
>they’ve been saying that since the release of the deck
>valve release schedule
>>
>>741679096

>>
>>741678658
You're missing a whole TB of space

>>741678817
>not a PC
How is it not a PC? You can install any OS and use any peripherals you want with it.
>>
have you seen steamcucks? they will eat anything up
>>
>>741679230
That just brings up a better question of why Valve didn't have a 1TB model. 2TB is pretty overkill. 1TB is the sweetspot and has been since the Steam Deck days.
>>
>>741678658
>1x16gb
Oof
PC gaming is absolutely fucked no matter what camp you are in
>>
>>741678658
But the Steam Machine is $1,049 and that build is over $300 more. Now show a competitively priced SFF machine.
>>
>>741679326
Nah I would say in the current year 2 TB is the sweet spot.
4TB is definitely overkill unless you are installing huge unoptimized AAA titles and just leaving them installed.
I bought a 4TB and now realize I'll probably never come close to filling it up since I generally uninstall games after I'm done with them.
I came from a 1 TB and it definitely felt more restrictive than not.
>>
>>741678330
Yet!
>>
>People outraged at Valve by the costs
>Costs like $900 to build a similar on partpicker
Isn't it expect to pay like a $150 for a gimmick form factor? Why are people mad at Valve and not the current market for this?

I thank god I randomly upgraded my PC right before all the price hikes. I didn't even had a reason to, just felt like it.
>>
>>741677545
>>
>>741679753
It is telling, isn't in. The people complaining are the same people that always complain about valve, and you know who they are.
>>
>>741679753
>Why are people mad at Valve and not the current market for this?

Because Valve is a massive company that can afford to sell things at a reasonable price. Valve can be nice to people and make 9 billion instead of 10 billion dollars of profit each year.
>>
>>741677545
I think anyone that buys this is straight up retarded. You can just buy a better and cheaper PC and you would be able to update the components over time unlike this weak ass shit cube
>>
>>741679301
This doesn't add up, if steamcucks eat up anything then why did they liquidate the Steam Controller V1 inventory for $5? Why did the first attempt at "steam machines" fail and why does almost no one own a Index or Valve Knuckles?
>>
>>741679961
>It is telling, isn't in.
lmao esl moment
>>
>>741677545
They were thinking prices were going to stay stable when they started development on this shit years ago.
Sometimes you just get fucked by the market.
>>
>>741677545
Cheap! Not as cheap as the PS5 but cheap!
>>
>>741680005
>at a reasonable price
These prices are reasonable at this market. Just because they are the only company that has a semi-competent digital distribution platform doesn't mean they are going to subsidize their hardware.

It's so sad that Valve's competition is so bad that gamers get parasocial and thing Gabe is some epic gamer fwiend who's looking out for them just because Valve mostly keeps their fuckery to loot boxes in decade old games.
>>
>>741678173
>retard schizo babble
You control the case you buy.
>>
>>741679753
>>Costs like $900 to build a similar on partpicker
Then it should cost 900 at most.
>>
>>741677545
If you watch Gamers Nexus's Video, the people from Valve he interviewed stated they have no contract with anyone for Ram, and that the manufacturers are operating with a "we give you a price this week, you buy it at said price, or we just won't sell you anything from here on out." approach. The reason the prices are so high is that they've factored in ram prices increasing week after week per order for hardware.
>>
>>741680389
Now pay someone to put all the parts together. That's the difference.
>>
>>741677545
>entry level is 512gb not 1tb
whoever at valve thought 512gb was enough needs to be fired. even consoles give you 1tb.
>>
>>741679753
It's been a long time since I last looked for PC parts, and I was surprised to see the Steam Machine's price. I've heard about the rising prices, but my god, the market is fucked. I can't find a deal that outweighs the form factor and convenience of the Steam Machine.
>>
>>741680415
Why don't RAM companies just replace their sales staff with AI? What purpose to sales people have in the current meta of everyone needs your product no matter the price?
Wasn't AI meant to be awesome?
Something doesn't add up.

>>741680556
>Getting fucking booty blasted is a human thing. Fire humans or is the AI just fucking bullshit? hmm
It isn't "getting booty blasted"
They are back to running a computer Hardware cartel, something the ram companies have done in the past. They are leveraging the corrupt politicians in power currently to do so without any repercussions, using AI demand as a smokescreen to justify their illegal price fixing.
>>
>>741677545
they were boxed in by a bunch of design choices made before component prices spiked

You have anything in an equivalent size and power draw?
A PC as small as the steam machine is going to cost significantly more, all else being equal.
>>
>>741682553
major thing with the gabecube is that it's obviously not for 'enthusiasts' aka people who have their own capable PCs already, why the hell would it be? it's supposed to be a 'console' like experience, where you get the thing, plug it to your TV, and you can just play tons of games without any hassle
it not being subsidized might have pros but the cons are that it will never compete against actual consoles, or even prebuilts from bigger brands, or how the de-facto standard edition is the one with the gamepad and it's just balls to the walls expensive
but ultimately i feel like discussions about the price point are moot because the major factor is the fucking environment we live in, shit IS going to be expensive, now (and for a long while) is not the time for consumer hardware to be released at all
>>
>>741683713

If they swapped that 2TB drive for a 1TB drive and 32 gigs of RAM, it would've been at least somewhat viable. But as it stands, considering that it doesn't even have an Nvidia GPU, you can literally just buy a better gaymen laptop for that money, and it'll be entirely portable as a bonus. It's a shitty deal no matter how you slice it.

The acer Acer 16" Nitro V 16S is 1,199 usd but it comes with a 5070 mobile gpu. 5060 mobile laptops like the Acer Nitro V 15.6 are around 900-1000. i'm still gonna say that the major fault is any company that isn't already big in the hardware industry, releasing its own hardware in the current time - there is just no going around it, it will be expensive. I've been reading and apparently, when ordering a gabecube, you can get a single stick of 16gb ram or 2x8gb, randomly, because valve has no actual contracts? going into hardware at this time was a mistake

The only thing you can change is the ram and ssd. The good thing about a PC is that you can change parts, including the cpu/mobo/gpu. It's closer to a laptop and speaking of laptops I've seen some MSIs on sale last week. As a matter of fact they're still on sale. My lunch break is almost over so I'm not gonna start digging for other brands but I'm sure you can find decent deals with acer/asus/etc which will perform better than the cube.

It doesn't even have to be new consoles. Current stockpiles just need to run out and new contracts need to be signed to bring about the console apocalypse. Consoles are already trying to ease people into that by raising prices across the board.
>>
>>741697447
The gaybecube is weaker than a discrete 7600 so any 5060 or 9060 laptop should beat it. Said laptops are in the 900-1000 iss range
>>

>>

Laptop GPUs are not the same as full fat desktop GPUs even if they have the same name. They're weaker, thermal throttled and designed to consume less battery life.

>>741697857
Actual real world testing showed it tk be weaker than the discrete 7600 aka the mobile 7600 amd chip. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdm85jhn2Ps
The 9060/5060 desktop gpus are so far ahead that even their mobile versions beat the steam deck easily.

I think the problem is valve even trying to sell a console to begin with, people who play PC will have better PCs, people who play console are going to compare the price to consoles and see it as a bad deal, the only people this would appeal to are people loyal to the steam brand or people who are thinking about getting their first PC

1x16GB is the way to go with DDR5 unless you want to get 32GB of RAM (which is obviously more expensive). I'm talking about in the DIY perspective, buying 8GB x2 is completely braindead retarded.
>>
>>741677545
They were thinking hardware prices would be normal, then they got fucked.
>>
Anyone with a functioning brain can tell that Valve didn’t want to release this at that price, AI be damned the specs and performance don’t justify it whatsoever. People who play steam games already have PCs, so the only real audience they could grab was consolefags and they fucked it with the pricing

genuinely curious
if someone build an actual rig with these specs, how much would it cost by comparison to the steam machine?

I wanna know if people are actually mad about the price being too high relative to the specs. Or if they're just made the specs aren't that great so its not worth the price because at that point just spend a bit more and build something better kind of deal
>>
>>741700134
GamersNexus review contains an example build with diy parts and it's slightly cheaper than the cheapest Steam Machine model, just replace the PSU they chose with something at around 2x the price because they chose a literal fire hazard for some reason.

wow no shit. how is that ever an argument?
at least bring up another pre-built with better/same specs, same size and same/lower price. like that atomman g1 from minisforum

everybody knows you can build a better PC but in order to troubleshoot a DIY pc you need double the parts lying around at home if you were to run into issues

digital foundry has shown time and time again (go watch ratchet video, i think some Assassin with grass), consoles have their place. they have one API and there's often options you simply don't get for PC even with all the sliders, relative to compute/end-visuals

i'm not saying PC is worse, it's just different and it really is a preference thing what one wants to have

The most common complaint I see is that people would rather pay even more for hardware that isn't shit. It being 1k isn't the biggest issue, the hardware is trash and was outdated two years ago. You can pay slightly more and get something way better than what they're offering.

They're selling you e-waste for current day prices.
>>
>>741698185
This can't be stated enough.
Steam machine didn't make much sense from a marketing perspective.
People who want PC games probably have a PC already.

People who want console games aren't going to get one either because none of the console exclusives are there.

Coupled with the fact that console sellers sell at a big loss but recoup costs on things in their ecosystem which Gabe didn't get the memo on...

Wrong, you can buy prebuilds for cheaper. Valve is greedy or retarded, or they bit off more than they chewed and got scammed by amd for offloaded shit parts, so scammed and greedy thinking they could offload this shit to us for $1200 when you can buy literal cheaper PC's for $500 less.

2TB is in that awkward area where you have enough, but then it's not actually enough since you are now conditioned to hoard. It's really 1TB or 4TB imo.

the problem is hardware part prices. Steam Machine in 2024 would be half the price it currently is.
I think Steam machines biggest issue is entry level is 512gb ssd. thats not enough for the price. Even consoles give you 1tb by default. Its the worst part of the Steam Machine to me and feels like a rip off.
They need a revised model with 1tb ssd and two ram sticks.
