There are people who hate everything about Megaman Battle Network other than its combat. They hate the two protagonists-two worlds system, they hate the chip collection, they especially hate the zany stories that don't do any harm. I mean, I get that the games are definitely flawed, but do they really deserve that much hate?
>>
I love Mayl!
>>
MMBN2's Netopia arc is best example of ludonarrative harmony in the series, maybe one of the best in games in general especially for its time. Honestly 2 is the series high point as far as its single player story arcs go.I wrote a post about why and it's somewhere in the archive and I'll post it again if people are interested

SciLab being attacked by ShadowMan -> Netopia -> International meeting a the Castle -> Plane Hijack is just back to back kino.
Sure you get FreezeMan right after (the last arc before endgame) but it's not worse than ElecMan from 1, BubbleMan or FlameMan from 3 or fucking everything from 4.
2 in general is underappreciated. Best standard boss theme too

I love MMBN. MMBN2 was my 1st GBA game and the combat it unique to this day.

>Sure you get FreezeMan right after

Maybe I'm just a masochist, but I honestly loved the Freezeman part, you are running all over the net and venture in to the Undernet (which MMBN2 Undernet had sick aesthetics). I understand why people hate it, but I always enjoy it, with the except of getting the heat data (I think? that one part you got to go to the camp ground grill).

Damn forgot to erase my x topic title lol.

I just find the story and characters to be kinda boring. Mega Man Battle Network has roughly the same degree of depth as Mega Man 9, but also 10,000 times the words. MegaMan has no personality. Mayl has no personality. Lan is the most generic shonen protagonist stripped down to the barest essentials. ProtoMan has no personality. Chaud is the most worthless goddamn character in existence.
>>
Also, SO MUCH about how Battle Network is designed is just to waste your time. Endless backtracking. 80% of every single game is walking back and forth between the same locations over and over.

>Chaud is the most worthless goddamn character in existence
Extreme retard take. Chad and Protoman are the best characters.

>Plays a Megaman game for the story.

Do you really?

Not him, but if it's gonna be there, it should try to be entertaining. Even if you aren't playing for it, the story is still in the game.

If there's gonna be this much reading, it should be something worth reading.

you're looking for all the wrong things. nobody who likes Battle Network plays it expecting Hamlet and deep character character development.

it's Frutiger Aero the series.
Early Internet cyberspace optimism in 2000's shonen Beyblade/Bakugan package, and a handful of "how the fuck did they get away with this" bits thrown in there to boot. All of this, and it has incredible gameplay too.

It's one of purest "product of its era" games ever, everything about it is the way it is because of the culture of its time.
>>
>>741680350

Pretty much this.
>>
>>741680350
Frutiger aero is just a design aesthetic. MegaMan Battle Network uses way, way too many words to say literally nothing. Reading any dialogue whatsoever in any Battle Network game is just a waste of time.

>2 in general is underappreciated
What are you on about? BNfags usually fellate 2 to high heaven.
>>
MMBN2 is the only game where different net areas have different designs. Starting from MMBN3, all net areas except the Undernet look identical, just with different color palettes.
>>
>>741680912
Until that part...
>>
>>741680497

That's pretty much how I played the game as a kid lol. Was 12 when the series came out and skipped through like 95% of the dialogue since I couldn't be bothered reading that shit.
>>
>>741680981

To be fair, Netopia and Yumland have some overlap, but overall yeah.
>>
>>741678898

my biggest gripe with BN is that its interpretation of cyberspace is kinda dull beyond the wacky narrative contrivances of "my dishwasher got hacked and is going to stab me"
>>
I think what really made me realize how boring Battle Network's writing was was in MMBN6, where Lan moved to another city. I found that I didn't miss the ACDC cast at all. If anything, it was a breath of fresh air.

Mayl personality is a nice girl. Quite entertaining and there's nothing wrong with that
>>
>>741682770
It's no surprise that she's the canon love interest.
>>
>>741682770
You may as well replace her with cardboard and there's no difference.
>>
>>741682770
Nice girl archetype is fine but entertaining? She doesn't do anything and nothing much is done with her. Her being a hafu, her essentially living alone, even her feelings for Lan, these don't really matter and pale in importance to Saturday morning hijinks of the week. SF at the least cared about character writing and gave its characters a modicum of depth.

Mayl is hot. That's all she needs to be.
>>
>>741684858

Isn't she like 12 or something?
>>
>>741684837
They really did get things straightened out by SF3. Too bad that SF2 shat the bed.
