I don't get all the fuss about the price. Isn't the 1000$ price a decent enough price for and low end/entry level PC?. For references when I checked the most popular pc dealer in my country, the cheapest prebuild PC they are selling is about the same specks as the steam box (biggest difference is that it has double the storage), but it cost 1400$ on sale and the normal price is 1750$. Is it just the Norwegian prices that extra fucked or is there something else that I'm missing?

it's a halo product to get them a foothold into the console/tv gaming market. if it doesn't sell it doesn't really matter. the overall purpose of having this device is having some brand recognition. the steam machine 2, 3 etc will likely be cheaper and much more successful.

Hate to break it to you, but this is the Steam machine 2 here you´re talking about.
The 1st steam machine was a flop (rightfully so) and it looks like the 2nd one will be aswell.

Both times, they´re making the same faulty assumptions.

Maybe the SM3 in 2035 will finally catch on.
>>
>>741689739
A lot of people don’t realize this yet. It took forever to teach people who were building their first rigs to always use even numbers and to space them correctly. Those habits take forever to go away. You’ll probably still hear this from someone randomly in 10 years. That isn’t to say that 2 sticks isn’t faster. It is, but it is extremely negligible now.
If I was buying a Cube, I would prefer if I received the 1 dimm version over the 2 8gb sticks. Your future upgrade will be cheaper.

What the makes the pc I posted supposedly so much more powerfull.
The main differences I see is
>8GB DDR6 VRAM VS 8GB DDR7 VRAM
>Some more cores and threads on the CPU of the PC
>The steam machine actually used DDR5 RAM compared to DDR4 on the PC, don't the the Hz of the Steam machine.
I fail to see any really meaningful difference between them then other then a better CPU on the PC

>>
>>741689551
Not this retarded shit.
It's to get people into PC gaming and maybe an option for people who want to upgrade.

You also have to consider that if it was cheap and sold at a loss like consoles, it would probably get scalped not just like regular scalping but for data centers as well
>>
>>741698434
This is a good point. I wonder if in meetings they strategized getting the early supporters to quickly expend their current inventory, and then the plan is to have this thing just sit at Sold Out status for close to a year, while they hope for market conditions to change. Then in 2027 they put out the presser that it’s back in stock AND it’s getting a price decrease. Then this launch is just a distant unpleasant memory.
>>
>>741698564
Bro, they had to increase the price for the Steam Deck too.
We're genuinely fucked right now.
Honestly at this point either chinkhelds or retro consoles will make a comeback as a cheap alternative to play better games than what we currently have too

Even chinkhelds get more expensive or get downgraded (less RAM)
You also have to consider that RAM is actually pretty cheap, it's just the manufacturers scam people (they have been caught several times in price fixing and stuff like that)
>>
>>741698202
It works exactly the same. Single channel = 64bit memory bus, dual channel 128bit bus.
The only difference is that DDR5 is typically running at 2800MHz whereas DDR4 is at 1600MHz for top tier memory and maybe up to 2000MHz if it's OC.
DDR5 if it was overclocked to 3200MHz would have identical bandwidth in single channel configuration to DDR4 running at a typical 1600MHz in dual channel configuration.
>>
>>741689385
>how well this mini PC turned out

Everything I've seen has demonstrated this to be a crap value, even if it could launch for its intended MSRP.
>>
>>741698281
the Series X is a better gaming computer than the steam machine, and I say this as someone who owns neither
>>
>>741699386
You’re right in terms of size of the bus, but ddr5 operates with 2 independent 32-bit channels per stick rather than 1 64-bit. That allows it to communicate with each sub channel independently. In gaming that will be sufficient for near full dual-channel performance, particularly in a low tdp environment. If you started asking your Steam Machine to do really difficult cpu intensive work streams or if it had an apu, then you would feel it in the performance.
>>
>>741699759
The only time single channel is limited and problematic is if you're bandwidth constrained and 64 bits is 64 bits no matter what. I don't think gaming workloads have ever been meaningfully bandwidth constrained. (Unless you're using RAM as VRAM)
>>
>>741689739
It's "dual channel" in the sense that it splits up the 64bit channel of a single slot into 2x 32bit. You still need both sticks to run 64bit x2.
