It's a luxury device for enthusiast couch gamers. Sorry you got priced out, but it just is what it is. Some of you just weren't meant to enjoy everything.
>>
I struggle to have a mental model for someone who would've bought this at $750, but somehow can't afford a couple hundred dollars more as if $750 doesn't already make this a significant purchase. I guess the product just isn't that good

I see the paid valve posters arrived at the "Bargaining" stage of grief.

I'm not the target audience but I was thinking that it's stupid expensive
but then I realized that it's literally less than I paid for my 4070ti(ok I overpaid on release because my previous GPU died but still) so is it REALLY that expensive or are poor people just uppity?

This was intended to release for 400 - 450 bucks when they developed ist in 2023 but then the AI bubble happened and Valve just does not care to wait longer since it would be even more outdated later on APU wise while the parts that make it so expensive - RAM and SSD - would likely stay high

I remember arguing at length with a /v/tard that it would have to be $999 MINIMUM and he just wouldn't accept it. Kept bringing up how this chucklefuck calculated its BOM so it will definitely be around $700, "800 tops" and this was only a couple months ago. Wish I screencapped it.

Naw dawg it's not even the price anymore, it's the value. Paying $1500 + tax + tip to only play older games is straight up stupid. Add to that the extra overhead of having to troubleshoot linux. It's just not worth it.
I could buy it, I wanted to buy it, but I already have a PC (with Linux dualboot) I would gain nothing from it.

Well nobody expected Valve to take such a large margin as they did. And nobody expected the Iran war to happen.

Nobody is talking about "selling it for the price of components". It's $1050 in a market where this buys you a brand new RTX 5060 gaming PC which outperforms the Steam Machine by what, 30%? Even $800 gets you a better PC since even the RTX 5050 on a DDR4 PC outperforms the Steam Machine. I mean shit, add in an extra $100 and you get the Playnix Console with a 16GB 9060XT. Do you think companies selling these devices don't have profit margins?

Valve is either taking a much larger profit margin, or they have a far less efficient assembly process, or they picked their components poorly. Either way the customer doesn't care because at the end of the day it's an extremely underwhelming computer compared to what $900-$1200 gets you elsewhere.

>inb4 mini PCs are always more expensive
Absolutely not the case. Maybe it was 10+ years ago, but not anymore. We've had several mini PCs which outperform full sized PCs in their price brackets just in the past 5-6 years.

So you never once saw anons posting pic related and quoting the speculation from this video over and over again?
OK.
FWIW I agree with you that the price of the Steam Machine sucks and is not worth buying at that price point for anyone that has the slightest clue of what else is out there, I'm just saying I saw this coming from a mile away that it was going to be north of a thousand dollars in spite of the speculative retards. Again, I wish I screenshotted some of those conversations as I went in-depth before concluding $999 for the minimum SKU. If anything, I still underestimated yet anons called me an antishill or a shitposter for saying it.

>It's a luxury device

I said the same thing and had a bunch of upset retards replied to me for saying it was a "luxury device" apparently that upsets people when you say that. Kek

It's not even worth $700, so they're overcharging for an underpowered console to recoup their money and because of "the market" and clearly Valve has no control over that, so it's justifiable to charge an outrageous price for a product. That's how you get people to spend $1,100 on something that isn't even worth $700.

>>741693979

I haven’t bought a home console since the PS2. I’ve been a PC only gamer with some portables since. I say that because the counter to what you say is that consoles exist. If money is no object, and you want luxury couch gaming, then you should just buy the PS5 Pro over this. It has CEC, suspend/resume play, better performance, and it’s a mature platform with most of Sony’s catalog going back to the psx. If you want a pc in the living room, then build one and put it in your server room, and run a cable through the wall to your tv.

No, I fully believe that’s what this thing costs to make right now. I bet they’re doing 3%GM or so on it. They have no leverage in their hardware contracts buying in the 100Ks of units compared to Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo buying in the 10Ms of units. Just dogshit timing on their part.

I think the price is fair for a PC if the quick search of a benchmark I found was accurate. I'm not sure though why one might buy it over a PC, there doesn't appear to be an advantage other than it being small which isn't a massive deal
