There is no reason to have an overengineered d-pad on a controller that isn't for 2D purism. It's just for vestigial inputs, it's not even the best tool for menu navigation in a competently designed game.
Does this excuse the Steam Controller 2? Fuck no. They should have ditched the analog sticks and d-pad and given us one of the pre-release SC 1.0 variants with the improvements that have since been made to the SC 2.0 like better bumpers and grip buttons.

>map left touchpad to dpad
>feels better than the actual dpad
>map right touchpad to dpad
>map sticks to dpad
> map triggers half and full presses to dpad
>map back buttons to dpad
>map r1 and 3 + l1 and 3 to dpad
>use start and select to tripplemap everything to dpad again
It's dpad time!
>use gyro to aim
