Strogg from Quake 2 are cool enemies
>>
I agree, and it's a crime we didn't get a Quake 5. Really liked Quake Wars.
>>
I think they're a cool concept that they failed to take anywhere more interesting.
>>
They should expand upon the Quakeverse in the sequel
>>
TRES

>>
>>741747594
such a fun multiplayer game especially the spy type
>>
yeah I always thought the strogg were cool and spooky. I got very little time with quake wars but I remember really enjoying it. It was console only or something wasn't it?
>>
>>741747293
I always thought they were awesome.

>>741747943
The implications that they're the result of humans coming into contact with Lovecratian stuff in in the remaster and like jumped dimensions or something is pretty cool. It explains why they want to "convert" humanity in the first place and why they see normal humans as traitors.

>The implications that they're the result of humans coming into contact with Lovecratian stuff in in the remaster and like jumped dimensions
Qrd?
>>
>>741749884
wait what? i thought strogg were an alien race using the meat of different races they conquered? they changed it to lovecraft stuff? not sure i like that
>>
>>741747293
What a coincidence, I just finished playing through Quake 2 and all the expansions for the first time today and a thread pops up. They're very cool conceptually and visually but as enemies you fight against I massively prefer the Quake 1 bestiary. Feels like too many engagements are solved by peeking corners whereas in q1 each monster can easily be fought head on, although the lack of air control in q2 may be a big contributing factor to that.
>>741750437
>>741750443
In the new Nightdive expansion it's revealed that the Strogg are thralls of the original eldritch Quake monsters, and the final boss you face is a pair of shamblers. Though it's all about as canon as the original 2 expansions afaik, which is to say not at all.
>>
I like that Strogg and Peeker in QC are very emotional for a Strogg cus they're cut off from everyone else
>>
>>741750437
>>741750443
Nothing really explicit. The Strogg has always used the same emblem that appears on boxes in Quake 1 and the bad humans have like stuff implanted in their heads that makes them evil or something. The Quake 1 remaster shows the humans digging deep and discovering the lovecraftian stuff that takes control of them and they have a space ship with all the monsters on it. Then in the Quake 2 remaster it refers to the ultimate Strogg "creator" or whatever and you go deep down into an ancient temple complex and fight some shamblers. It's a way of connecting the two games, but take it or leave it.
>>
So why is Q2 unpopular compared to Q1? Pathfinding?
>>
>>741752164
Q2 always felt more like a tech demo to me back in the day. The coolest part was the Strogg and the weird body horror enemy design but actually playing the game felt worse than Q1. Music felt more like buttrock and lacked that very atmospheric spooky evil shit Trent Reznor did for Q1.
>>
>>741749862
>. It was console only or something wasn't it?
no, it was on PC.
>>
>>741752408
>no, it was on PC.
well shit, I missed out on the chance to do that then.
>>
>>741750758
Quake 1 always was related with Quake 2. Humanity got their tech because of dealing with the Warp Gates, which also brought the Strogg to Earth.
Quake 3 Arena has the Arena masters pulling people from Earth across time.
This lore is kept even in Quake Champions.
Wolfenstein, Quake, Doom are all connected via the Warp Gates.
>>
>>741752164
People already bitch about backtracking and damage sponge enemies in Quake 1, all of that is ramped up to 11 in Quake 2

>Unpopular Opinion
Huh? Why is it unpopular? Everyone thinks that Stroggs are cool
Usually in games like this they botch the "new" designs, but I actually like Q4 stroggs all the same as the Q2 ones
They give off this dirty, rusty, bloody and disgusting vibe of walking decomposing corpses. But at the same time they're pretty agile, fast and have heavy guns
And they have girls with massive tits!

And I also like the Q2 remake. I'm not that much of a purist and while I don't like some minor parts about it, I still think it's cool and the new enhanced models are fucking amazing. Keeping that crusty pixelated look while adding more polygons is a good touch and it only makes the game better
>>
I enjoyed quake 2 campaign more thanthe first game, which just kind of felt like whatever
>>
Wait is quake 4not just an arena shooter like 3? I never played it because I assumed it was and i don't like multiplayer games
>>
>>741750437
Fan theory because fans have nothing else to do
Q1 and Q2 have nothing in common story wise. The devs were just making "cool" games about whatever, they didn't care about "story" that much to actually make a series of games
Source: the book Masters of Doom. A must read for everyone who loves Doom and Quake and Carmack and Romero

TARGETED
>>
>>741747293
they are cool enemies, but their games are boring
>>
>>741752164
>>741752329
I'm not in a mood to troll, but I still don't like Q1 fags who are like
>oooohhhh, 2 enemies on the screen (NOT A TECH DEMO AT ALL) and le "eerie" synth non-music! Amazing!
>what? plenty of enemies, better graphics, kick ass music, cool guns and hardcore atmosphere of a gritty sci fi action movie?
>not for me unfortunately.....
They listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c67dIM0R-CE
and are like
>this is FIRE
Huhh???????????????????????????
Faggot, listen to THIS

>>
>>741747293
They're cool, better than a lot of fps enemies. I just prefer the eldritch monsters.
>>
>>741753469
>can't appreciate a good moody, atmospheric soundtrack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IE1NmyrbWA

Q1 was built to fit a horror ambiance, Q2 was built to fit rock.
>>
>>741753879
Bloodborne has a better take on this
You literally can't see and comprehend them
Stroggs are better FPS enemies because they're just decomposing cyborgs driven by a bigger war machine. You shoot a rocket and they gib
>eldritch monsters
Why do your faggot rockets work on them?
>>
>>741754040
>defensive for no reason
kek
>>
>>741753085
It is, the multiplayer is where Slash and Strogg's crouch slide in QC comes from
The singleplayer was divisive because it was a Doom3 clone
>>
>>741754040
I'm more inclined to believe a rocket capable of doing damage to a Lovecraftian horror than a pizza cutter.
>>
>>741754040
Cthulhu is knocked out by a literal boat bumping into his head in the original book, something being eldritch has nothing to do with how ethereal something is.

>posting D64
Ultimate Doom on PS1 was better
Same composer too and the music there is fine, yes
It's just that you don't fight 1 (one) enemy at a time like in Quake, or 2 (two) enemies at a time like in Doom 64
Also Doom PSX had this

>Ultimate Doom on PS1 was better
Disagreed. Doom PS1's ost felt like the prototype and D64's felt like the final product. Not to say PS1's ost didn't have a few good ones.

I love the Strogg but they suffer from the show-not-tell issue. Just lose the narration and it's golden.
>>
>>741752164
The main thing i remember (it's been a while) is how many more buttons and backtracking you have to do in 2.
>>
>>741753085
4 has the Stroggification
>>
My last memory of Quake 4 was doing a LAN match with my sister's friend before shortly after he got arrested and expelled (along with his twin brother) for spray painting the school gymnasium
>>
I always hear about Quake 1 mods everyone loves but what about some good Quake 2 mods? I know they exist but I've never once heard them mentioned by name

performance issues
>>
>>741747293
This opinion is only "unpopular" because most people do not have an opinion on Quake 2. It is not that the contrary position is popular instead, such as people disliking the Strogg.
>>
>>741754337
>QC
Huh? Why is it even on your list? It has no business there
>>
>>741747293
Strogg Infiltrator is a rad design. I love him. And then they gave him crouchsliding and then I loved him even more.

I have good memories of watching my dad playing Quake 2 on our PSX back in 2001, he used to be extremely good at console shooters at that time. I also remember when they released it for free and that's when I played it, quite enjoyed it. Is the version from Internet Archive good and working?
>>
>>741747293
Not really controversial opinion
>>
because msot people eitehr aprrot or do contrarians tuff about q2

I remember when it as released. The biggest point of Q1 was that it was not only the first true 3d game, but even if it was made without 3d, it was a very good shooter with excellent atmosphere. it was revolutionary
Q2 was just another of several 3d shooters released. It was also excellent. It also racked hundreds upon hundreds of hours in multiplayers. Both q1 and q2 having sucha massive online presence resulted in q3 being arena shooter. But since quake 2 was only a very good shooter and not somethign revolutonary like q1, people often diminish it in comaprision to q1
To this day, I liek both and ic an tell which game does somethign better, but I cannot say that q1 or q2 is better. For me both are sign of ancient perfection, a game made to be fun to play
also thanks for yesterday thread, completely forgot about arcane dimension mod for q1. Holy fucking shit, how I kept delaying that for 10 years

I hope they have something decent to announce for the 30th anniversary at QuakeCon, even if it's just another expansion for one of the older games.

Sometimes Debra Wilson is a good choice. She should do more monsters.
>>
>>741771085
She's a pretty good voice actress when she has proper direction, it's just that her face is used over and over for weird and obviously motivated reasons. Also prefer hearing her even when she's phoning it in over any of the faggots from the funimation school of anime dub voice acting.
>>
>>741747293
I wouldn't say unpopular. Quake 2 was simply too different in terms of story than Q1, which is why some people bitched about it at the time, but when viewed as its own thing, it's pretty good.

Thought the quake war stroggs were the most peak portrayal of them.

Q2 Iron Maidens are cool. I like gibbing them. I wish we could gib them all instead of some being unkillable.
I only played the Q2 remaster but the way the music worked felt a bit off. Like it would start and never loop so there's be what felt like long stretches of gameplay without music. Felt different from playing Q1 ('s remaster).
