>yeah just kill 20 of this extremely hard and rare enemy that gives 0 EXP or rewards to unlock the secret boss
How the fuck was anyone meant to figure this out? Did they really expect some random player to just kill a bunch of tonberries for fun?

Yes. You really weren't expected to know about it. Secret boss and whatnot.

This. Cheevo culture has destroyed any sense of mystery and wonder of discovery in vidya.

they're not a bad source of death spells so the idea was you'd probably get jumped by the king while farming

You played the older games you know tomberry is special
>>
>>741761312
>rare enemies
There's at least one screen in the Centra ruins where only Tonberries appear as enemies.
>>
>>741761312
>Hard enemy gives you 0 EXP
As a game you should instinctually know based on previous experience that this is centred around some kind of greater reward.
>>
>>741762024
You'd have a point if the area was nothing but Tonberries, but the Centra Ruins is a timed dungeon so it's not that unfeasible that Tonberries are just there as a time waster and damage check.
>>
>>741761835
I hate this false narrative. A lot of secrets in old games were intentionally designed to be so complex or stupid that you had to buy the strategy guide or a subscription to an official magazine to find out what you missed
>>
I never got Doomtrain and I don't give a shit.
>>
>>741762152
timer goes away after you bop odin, then you'd farm tonberries with both draw and mug for death spells and knifes to refine into death spells, or AP ammo for Irvine. plenty of reason to farm the buggers outside of the king
>>
>>741761312
they are common in Odin's place and you can spam limit breaks. Nothing will ever be worse than dodging 100 lightning strikes in FFX.
>>
>>741762197
It's not about being able to realistically discover everything in a game for yourself through normal play, but about the rarefied experience of extremely niche/hidden/buried elements and the general sense that there could always be things like that hidden everywhere throughout the game. Nowadays, gamers coom their pants over it if a single minuscule trivial unknown thing about a game is discovered more than a month after launch.
>>
>>741761312
Someone at school told you about it because he was Nintendod by his uncle.
>>
>>741762248
I got him but never really used it outside of the passive effects you'd get from having it equipped. I imagine it's good in a few spots though, but FF has always been pretty bad about the utilization of status ailments and bosses.
>>
>>741762319
Like, I agree with the idea, and there's a lot of games where the idea is executed wonderfully (some that come to mind: FF7, FF8, Halo, Metal Gear), but it's almost a universally agreed upon fact at this point that FFX-2, FFXII, and Dragon Quest VIII intentionally locked secrets behind their strategy guides. (see: zodiac spear in FF12).
>>
>>741762253
Even assuming Death is so valuable that you'd want a full stack on every one of your characters, you should have a mage character who can draw 9 charges at a time and have a full stack in 12 turns, which is realistically going to happen in a single Tonberry battle.
This means you only have to kill 6 Tonberries to fully farm Death, which is a far cry from the 20 you need to unlock the King battle.

>>
>>741763674
I wouldn't say that missing out on Tonberry King is THAT big of a issue since IIRC you never get locked out of him and there is an Area where they are the only encounter that was good for AP Grinding, i think stumbling into him (Getting 20 Tonberry kills) as a blind player is more realistic then you think, especially if you already had a couple of other FFs under your belt and know Tonberries are "Special".

And GF-wise Tonberry isn't THAT much, the main deal is on the final Disc to CallShop and Haggle, but Gil should never really be a issue in VIII (Even without Haggle there is a Infinite Gil exploit) and CallShop is more very slight QoL.

The big deal i'd say is the Card thing.

Now XII's chest system(s)? That's some bullshit.
>>
>>741761312
I love bosses that are just normal mooks with a crown on.
>>
>>741762248
>>741762346
Doomtrain is the one summon worth using on all the bosses. It also has the rare 4x junctions and a special magic refinement. There are occult fan books that tell you what you need for Doomtrain.
Tonberry has lvl up and down which can get you better drops or draw or reduce xp gain if you're doing that. It also has call shop so you can access any shop you've interacted with previously which is great since you can't really go back.
>>
>>741762197
BULLSHIT.
You think anyone was buying a strategy guide for Mega Man X1?
>>
>>741762661
>but it's almost a universally agreed upon fact at this point that FFX-2, FFXII, and Dragon Quest VIII intentionally locked secrets behind their strategy guides. (see: zodiac spear in FF12).
They might've but that doesn't take away any nobility from the devs that were doing it for the other reason.

>But what about that poopman over there, slinging poop?!

>>
>>741763994
XII is great. The remakes are fucked up like they always are and that is your fault. Zodiac spear isn't a good weapon and requires a huge investment to get to on the grid as well. Fomalhaut are the better choice.

Nah, you assume too much here. I played the OG when it released and the chest stuff was still bullshit anon. Don't get so defensive over calling it opaque as fuck cause i didn't call XII as a whole shit or anything, i still enjoyed the game even back then, And to clarify i don't mean just Zodiac Spear's "DON'T OPEN THESE" Easter Egg chests, but also stuff like the Diamond Armlet and Spawn chances on top of drop chances, big difference between figuring those things out and "Kill 20 enemies to get Special BIG Enemy", which is still something XII still does.

It's a secret.
If you were expected to find it then it wouldn't be a secret.
"Did they really expect-" NO they didn't really expect. It's a secret.
By definition a secret is something you aren't supposed to know.
Furthermore, the only way you would know that you missed the secret is by cheating and looking it up. As a kid you wouldn't know that you were "missing out" on anything, you would just enjoy playing the game while remaining unaware.

>>741768656
>>741768920
Wrong. I beat FF9's Ozma, the optional super boss, with 2 of my characters wearing the beach clothes. Ozma is not even hard, it's just RNG. You simply bring it down with auto 9999 attacks like Steiner's Shock, Zidane's Thievery, Quina's Frog Drop and Freya's Dragon Crest. Ozma has less than 100k HP so you need to land less than 10 hits on it.
>>
>>741769045
How is anything I said wrong?

>>741769067
If you are the other guy, I'm sorry I accidentally clicked your post number too. Or maybe it was RNG.

>>741762346
>FF has always been pretty bad about the utilization of status ailments and bosses.
People often say this and are then shocked years later that so-and-so was susceptible to Berserk or Silence or something. "Slow" cripples Bizarro Sephiroth, for example.
>>
>>741768783
What could possibly compel you to stay on that screen grinding Tonberries if you didn't know about the king ahead of time?
>>
>>741769261
It was 1999, yeah? By that time cool guys like me were already using internet for gamin forums and guides. I remember seeing mention of Tonberry GF and that you needed to kill 20 of them for the boss to appear.
>>
>>741765771

>>
>>741769045
he's LITERALLY not rng. He has the most brutally complex battle script in the fucking game. Grinding won't save you from DOOMSDAY.

>>741769248
So many instances of this, sadly. I know of a few final bosses vulnerable to Poison/sap. Also, Diablos was vulnerable to blind.

>>

>>
>>741769523
>>741769572
You can also look at the cards, every card is a monster, GF or character in the game. Once you get the King Tonberry but never see it in game things get a little more obvious. Just in case you had any doubt, a sleeping kid in one of the schools mentions King Tonberry
I got stumped twice in this game. Trying to find Pupu the second or third time, and when you first go to the Cetra continent they tell you to take the bridge by Fisherman's Horizon, I tried to just go via the world map and didn't realize you had to go in the actual town and cross over
>>
>>741769523

In the original, chests with good shit have the same drop normal/rare w/wo armlet. Chests still have spawn chances but none are that bad. The exception is the spear area. The remake is where everything is moved to the coast with 1% chance to show up 1% chance to drop.

>>
>>741770317
I just checked his script for that EXACT scenario. You literally wouldn't survive the first turn. He's programmed to instantly cast either Meteor or doomsday, and his ai decides that DOOMSDAY is the optimal choice. You literally just game over after a single hit.

There are also autists who collect 99 of every item in the game, etc. and other shit who would have likely figured it out and spread the news but I am guessing people like that had the guide and were on the net. Guides being so widespread kind of killed the secrets only word of mouth would know about. But then again, I had the guide for 7 and there are still a shitload of secrets not in it and they don't go into depth at all on the deeper shit you can do with the materia system, or hidden stats, etc

>In the original, chests with good shit have the same drop normal/rare w/wo armlet. Chests still have spawn chances but none are that bad. The exception is the spear area. The remake is where everything is moved to the coast with 1% chance to show up 1% chance to drop.
Doesn't look like that to me, though i am admittedly going by the old Piggyback guide and what is "good shit" is relative. As said, im not talking about the remakes or 1% im talking about THESE mechanics in general, not just any specific chest or item, while there is shit with "locked" contents regardless of if you wear the armlet or not and has the same item in both item dropslots with a 100% item drop that was not the norm either. Pardon the shitty photo.

My point is that it was definitely a multiple coinflipping affair and the Diamond Armlet was definitely not consistent on if you should/should not wear it when opening a chests.

Drawing is the most efficient way to get a lot of spells (basically anything that you don't have the refine materials for incidentally from battles), and the earliest way to get some spells as well.
It's always funny that people will jump on spending hours playing triple triad as the "proper" way to play the game, but spending about a minute drawing 100 spells is the worst thing they've ever experienced.

But that wouldn't be a remake. A remake is a new game from the ground up that more or less follows the original's story and setting.
A remaster has already been done, but Square is notoriously careless with source code and assets, so a good one can't really be done. It'd take a fan redesigning and rendering new backgrounds.
>>

>A remake is a new game from the ground up that more or less follows the original's story and setting.
A remake is where all the assets are new, I think what you're talking about is a reimagining or reinterpretation, like DQVII-R or Romeo+Juliet (DiCaprio movie)

What I'm saying is that because they lost the original renders, they would HAVE to recreate the background scenes again, and at that point it's a remake and not a remaster. A remaster is putting the original assets through a filter or cleaning it up digitally, think remastered movie releases that go back to the original film transfer. SE can't do that here even if they wanted to now.

So I want higher resolution, clear backgrounds, which will have to be remade from scratch, so even if they followed the exact game 1:1 that would still make it a remake.

Zell has never-ending combo with Up Down, Left Left O, O X, Up Down and so on you can start at any point and the next prompt window will always have the next move for the combo. When you know that, you can input the next move in tenths of seconds because you don't need to wait the prompt window to fully open to see available moves

It's bullshit. A dev was asked about it. He said no. Squall isn't died, and Edea never killed him. His wound was grave, but she healed him before he was sent to the prison. Either because they needed him alive for info or because Edea remembered him, but we'll never know which one.
>>

>>741781573
yeah i think it's a fun theory but overall it actually hurts the narrative, the only real thing that gives it credence is the fact that after his wound the world does seem to get more fantastical with many things suddenly appearing that you've only heard of before, but to me the game gets more fantastical as it goes on to hammer home just how terrifying losing your memory is by the time you get to the Orphanage - a comparatively "mundane" thing to see juxtaposed with all the fantasticalness and is meant to be a very sobering wake-up call scene

>>
>>741783140
It's a hell of a challenge.
>>
>>741769248
To be fair, people don’t find this stuff out because the games all do a really bad job at conveying what status effects are useful and what aren’t. Plus, it’s always just more convenient to just brute force everything with regular attacks and spells. That’s one area where I feel that WRPGs typically mog JRPGs: status effect builds tend to be way more viable in the former.
>>
>>741783023
I think the linear path from Besaid to Zanarkand works for the game being Yuna's pilgrimage and Yuna being the MC and Tidus just being player's point of view character. Only after Zanarkand and Yuna forfeitting the fate that was cast on her you are allowed to roam the world freely to get ready for the final confrontation against Sin and Yevon.
>>
>>741783261
I cant remember even seeing status vulnerabilities on Scan/Libra, its always a trial and error with every enemy, combine that with status effects' already low accuracy and you get a waste of fucking time when you could have killed the thing with physical attacks or a summon before you happen to find the status that works
>>
>>741783207
a perfectly valid opinion really, i like Sonic Adventure 2 more than 1 for a similar reason
for RPGs though, maybe it's just engrained in me from playing older games that tended to have a world map but i simply love the feeling of leaving civilization to go explore entirely unknown territory in every direction, small of a moment as it was i'll never forget leaving Deiling City to go on the labyrinth rescue mission and just being uncomfortable trying to find my way to and through it, the suspense that comes with having to make it to, through, and back from a dungeon is important to me

>>741783673
in this VERY SPECIFIC INSTANCE i think such a thing is fine bc of course you'd be trying to inspect every part of a very small obscure island like that
>>
>>741783023
Definitely. The sense of adventure was lost in FFX. It's not like games such as Secret of Mana weren't able to keep an overworld while also keeping everything as actual connected levels (Secret of Mana still feels like you have way more freedom to explore, as well). FFX is the turning point when the series traded its soul in for unfun garbage it is today. I feel you really have to enjoy shitty contrived melodrama aimed at women in actually enjoy FFX on any level.
>>
I wonder if it’s even possible for a modern game to have cryptic, hard to discover secrets in the age of the internet. Any time a new game comes out these days, you have people 100%ing it and posting videos detailing every single secret within HOURS of the game releasing. You have to actively do a media blackout on that particular game in order to preserve any sense of discovery.
>>
>>741784413
Bloodborne did it with the one door. I don't remember the details though.
>>
>>741784413
There is these secrets in the nuHitman games that were figured out, but I honestly think it was just the devs spilling the beans on forums and stuff because of how impossible it was to discover it.

>>
>>741761312

>>
>>741784652
Hitman is a rare exception, but even then, a lot of the secrets have challenges tied to them, revealing that a secret exists even if it doesn’t reveal exactly how you’re supposed to discover them. The knowledge that exists compels autists to try different things to eventually find it.

I do remember that Whittleton Creek had the secret basement door that had a series of obscure steps to unlock it and the devs didn’t tell anyone what the steps where and just said that opening the door was possible.
>>
>>741784860
I think the hardest part about Obel Lake is figuring out that you can interact with the lake to begin with. Once you do that, then the rest of the quest comes down to just following the shadow’s instructions.

As for me, I had the PC version and the corresponding guide. The guide itself may have even been specifically for the PC version, but I don't remember.
Also, on my old computer from 1999 or whenever it was, the PC version ran at maybe 70% of the game's speed on PSX. The music was fine and played at normal speed, and I think the FMVs were OK, but everything else was slow. Combat, the way the characters moved around and interacted with each other, and so on. All slow. I didn't even realize how slow it was until I played the PSX version at a friend's house.

I have literally beaten a No-Junction playthrough of VIII (and not running from every fight, either). I will note that I consider "beating" it as getting up to the final save point before Ultimecia with all of her castle bosses dead because beating Ultimecia like that is just rolling the dice with awful RNG as you need to The End her several times while Invincible Moon is active - which sounds "fine" except the first thing she does is AOE curse to lock limits and she randomly selects your first party so yeah have fun doing that 100s of times before the game lets you win.

Everything up to that point was tough but doable. The hardest part of the game is the part split halfway through as you need Zell to beat the tank at the missile base but that means that you don't get him for the rematch with in in FH. Once you are past that part of the game everything is straightforward again.
>>
>>741787481
Thanks, I'll pass that information on to my 14-year-old self from 27 years ago. Great post.

How do no junction runs work in this mfer? Can you use items to get by?
>>
>>741788443
You need Junctions to use items in combat. Parts of the game come down to luck in a no junctions run.
>>
>>741788443
>>741788332
Cant use items without junctions
>>
>>741788332
Sadly you can't get Holy Wars without Junctioning. Invincible Moon is just fine (and is the only limit Rinoa will know besides Cannon anyway for this playthrough) but the problem lies in Ultimecia picking your opening party at random. You need Rinoa and Selphie to NOT be in the opening PT because they will get cursed and you can't remove it, and you need to cycle both of them in quickly before another AOE curse goes off. Its just rolling the dice, it isn't fun and the rest of the playthrough demanded nothing even close to this style of play.
>>
>no rewards
Huh? Pretty sure there was AP at least.
Anyway I went in knowing about the secret boss GF so I just went and grinded it out. Not a big deal, OP.
>>
>>741788606
Oh right, I forgot that. How do you survive Shockwave Pulsar without items, spirit or high HP then? Does The End skip it?
>>
>>741788730
The End literally "ends" whatever the current fight phase is and you have Invincible Moon keeping you alive in the meantime. The only part of the fight The End won't stop is the last part where she talks to you, but she actually has no HP at this point and you just need to hit her with anything 4 or 5 times to advance the dialog. Again...getting all of this set up though is the real problem.
>>
>>741788846
I’m surprised The End skips it because Shockwave Pulsar seems to be a move she automatically uses at the end of the second phase even if Griever has 0 HP left.
>>
>>741788730
You don't. The End skips a phase.
>>
>>741789126
...it doesn't skip it. The End sets the enemies current HP to 0. Transitions still happen. The only reason you have to The End Ultimecia at all is because she has like 8 separate phases of the battle (with Pulsar happening 75% of the way through them). You can't just start spamming The End because Pulsar will kill you. You need to Invincible Moon first, then The End spam. And for anyone keeping score this long, yes you actually can guarantee The Ends (or practically guarantee them which is good enough - there are several methods).
>>
>>741779979

>>741789321

One thing I really respect FF8 for is having a final boss that’s genuinely hard even if you learn the game’s mechanics, and near impossible if you don’t. It’s a step up from FF6 and 7, which both had final bosses who were absolute pushovers.

Like another anon said, it really does feel like a good chunk of hate towards FF8 comes from casuals being filtered.
>>
>>741771064
Really, in most rpgs where speed matters, it's godly. Being able to act more often than the boss is insanely good.

>>741789694
Yeah, most RPGs don't stick the landing well on final bosses, and 8 does a good job. They purposely set up the battle to take place over a lot of smaller phases so you can't just one hit everything.
>>
>>741777029
Funny enough, a low level run in FF8 is easy mode as long as you make some effort to keep your junctions up to date.
>>
>>741789694
>>741790273
>Final boss uses drawing and junctioning against you
>selects your starting party at random, so you have to be prepared to use all your characters at some point rather than just perma-benching some

Absolute kino. It’s everything a final dungeon in a JRPG should be.
>>
>>741785218
I just searched this in Japanese
Nomura designed Tonberry
The name was something he came up with just to be different and not be connected to any existing monster in fiction or otherwise.
It is half-fish, half other species.
He designed it to appear cute but have a deadly side.
He wanted it to hold a knife and lantern to signify that it was like a horror movie monster coming to kill you, and wanted to include a rope in its clothing to further illlustrate the idea of being executed (I am guessing kind of grim reaper image in the cloak?)
He wanted Tonberry to be a kind of check to players where if they just mashed attack they would get punished and needed to use strategy.
The fact that Nomura not only designed enemies they liked, but came up with an entire thought-out concept and themes as well as gameplay factors as well as original naming conventions impressed other team members and helped lead to him being a writer and director
>>
>>741774841
Bullshit. Had the guide to Zelda on NES. You're just a zoomer.
>>
>>741774841
Many games came with guides, especially in the West. Japan had huge communities both online and in person with circles, events, game store meets and game centers
The Japanese culture explains why they felt so confident in hiding shit so discretely because people would share info proactively
>>
>>741790827
As much as people like to shit on Nomura as a writer for writing convoluted plots, he understands visual storytelling and conveying tone through vibes better than most modern writers.

FF7 and 8 wouldn’t be half the games they were without their aesthetics and vibe.

Yep, the man makes kino. Just you bringing this up made me think of the dark cloaks XIII wear in Kingdom Hearts and how it plays into their existence and juxtaposes the bright, carefree shit Sora and co. wear and how Riku is kind of like a subdued mix, and their colors get darker as more shit happens in the series. Axl's wild visual also illustrates how he isn't quite one of them and crosses over to the good guy's side. Somebody posted a pic of all the monsters in FFVIII earlier and that era was so memorable but recent JRPG's have monsters where you are like wtf is this jabroni, although there are still some good ones that stand out they often rely on the classics like Behemoth, Tonberry, etc. when needed. As for the crazy storylines and plots, Sakaguchi told Nomura to make storylines that people can't fully grasp the first time through, and he basically turned the volume up to 11 on that and let's be honest, we still talk about their shit while so many other games come and go. To put it into zoomer speak, let these men cook

This is just RNG manipulation though, not dev-intended.

Dude also designed the in-game looks for the FFVI cast, though for some reason the sprite artist always get credit for that

Why are secrets so taboo? The only people it negatively affects is maybe the developers considering they actually spent resources including the content. It's all upside for the players, eventually people will figure it out and they'll have a reason to replay the game and enjoy the surprise.
>>
>>741765151
don't you get doomtrain from just walking up and "talking" to a train tunnel in the overworld? i did that just to see if I could enter the tunnel.

Zoomers absolutely hate the idea of playing a game more than once, or actually being interested in it instead of having twitch, discord and jewtube on two other screens and their phone at the same time

Games to them are like homework to be checked off (for some reason) so they can do more interesting things like cry about their hairlines
>>
gamefaqs has existed since 1995 and basically everything from every strategy guide was posted there almost instantly.

>>741793314
No, you need 6 Remedy+ (need Alexander), 6 Steel Pipes, and 6 Malboro Tentacles and the Solomon Ring from Tears Point.

Gamefaqs had a rumor about a secret keyblade that could only be gotten if you did the most ridiculous steps as well. What's your point?

>>741793556
Some of these Magazines were REALLY well hidden, never mind the Solomon Ring. You couldn't even SEE the fucking thing. On top of that, they were basically riddles. A farmer finds a dead wendigo while building a fence, an increase in attacks on people with "full recovery medicine" and a report on an increase in the marlboro population. They were cryptic as fuck. That's why it took so long for the requirements to summon Doomtrain to become common knowledge.

>>741793753
Fucking kill yourself. NOT EVERYONE HAD PARENTS TO DRIVE THEM AROUND EVERYWHERE AND NOT EVERYONE HAD GUIDES NOW FUCKING SLIT YOUR WRISTS.

>>
>>741794084
This, holy shit. I remember reading the entire FFVIII disc 1 script a month before release because someone was dumping + doing a rough translation of it as they were going. The internet was much more prolific (in certain areas) than people tend to expect. Where I live, household internet was commonplace circa 1995.
>>
>>741794171
So you ADMIT that you brought up bullshit to try and derail the thread. Good to know. Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>741794167

>>
>>741794264
you're the one who brought up the rumors (bullshit) section of gamefaqs anon.
>>
>>741793938
The Solomon ring is where you stop moving in Tears Point. Not seeing if the one place you can go is interactable is smooth brain territory.
As far as the clues
>farmer building a fence out of steel pipes
>"wait, that's an item"
>you need 666 of each item
>"i can't hold 666 of anything. it must mean 6 of each!"
>st full recovery medicine requires you playing around with the mechanics. since remedy doesn't do that, there must be a way to level up medicine, maybe via GF ability called Med Lv Up
>malboro attacks
>"what do malboros drop, since items seem to be the theme here?"
>you need 666 of each item
>"i can't hold 666 of anything. it must mean 6 of each!"
It's not Bioshock Infinite bell puzzle easy, but it's not hard.

>>
>>741794665
>IT IS FUCKING TINY AND ALMOST ENTIRELY

You literally can go forward and that's it. When you stop, there has to be a "why did I stop here? what's the point of this place?" moment where you interact.
>2 of them required to to sit there and mash x on a seemingly pointless pile of old magazines in a building you may just NEVER think to explore and a random room in Esthar.
You can buy those two from the shop in Esthar in that big shopping pavillion.

There’s a chance that people won’t discover unless the game is super popular and has a fanbase dedicated to finding things. Even then, some things are only discovered because a dev mentions it in an interview or Twitter post.
>>
>>741793286
YouTube videos that talk about secrets and the like in games have rotted people's brains into thinking they MUST experience EVERY single thing in a game on their first playthrough
Secrets you might discover on a subsequent playthrough? Nonono, we need every piece of CONTENT right NOW so we can then move onto the next thing

If this is about Crossbone Isle, you don't need to do the mismatched rowers thing to reach it. That's just so you can reach it earlier (when you aren't even able to finish it because you can't have all the necessary psynergy). You can jump in the red cyclone in the desert later to reach the island repeatedly, and you are forced to pass by it so that it's visible on your screen at one point.

The only way to lock yourself out of it is by killing the monster in the cyclone without reaching the island, which requires you to cast Douse while inside it to trigger the battle. In fairness though, there's a good chance someone will do that because you do the same thing to every other cyclone in the desert before that.

A lot of times, yeah. FF 7 and 8 were especially bad offenders.

>>741806394
I beat both well before I ever saw a guide. Finding everything is a challenge, but going from beginning to end is pretty easy.

the kind of secret that anyone paying close attention to things while playing the game can be expected to find is fun because it feels like a reward for being diligent. the kind of secret that you would only find by pure chance or reading a guide sucks because it feels like you got cheated. if you don't understand the difference you are the kind of person who buys scratch offs and impulse rolls in gacha games.

VIII would be a better game if magic and GFs were permanently equipped and couldn't be traded or ever removed.
This would add real choice and consequences and remove all the menuing whenever your party changes
