>softlocking as a game mechanic
Fucking brilliant

it's a survival game
gates are a skillcheck

what are you even talking about?

That's not what softlocking means
>>

That's not soft locking though?
Anyway, OP's bait aside, you guys got any hope left for Rain World after that diarrhea of a latest DLC?
>>
>>741764050
>>741763960
I say its pretty softlocking to directly punish the player for dying not just with lost progress so far, but with ability to progress further. You even lose karma for just quitting the game lmao. In some parts of the game it effectively puts you in purgatory with no way out. I spent 3 hours just trying to get out of nigger sky islands

By the time you get to Sky Island you should have already gone through 3 or 4 different areas bare minimum and be experienced enough to gather food and know stuff like the game counting a quit outside of shelters as death (hell there's a warning when you open your menu), you're telling me you still can't avoid the fauna and lose to most of the lizards or something?
The only actual threat in that area if you're playing normal/easy mode are the white lizards. And maybe the vultures on a section or two.
>>
>>741763901
unironically skill issue, get better at playing video games

>>741764050
i just got into rain world and sunk like 40 hours over the last week in the base game, is the dlc worth playing? i assumed that the game's old enough now that updates were finished. also what mods are good?
>>
>>741764351
First DLC is fine to go through after you play Survivor really.
Ideally you play Survivor -> Hunter and then hop on the DLC.
If you don't give a fuck about the "story" you can just go DLC right now though, but the slugcats from there are sort of overpowered so the game can turn into a power fantasy pretty quick depending on which one you pick.
The Watcher is (or was) pretty damn bad, for a solid year at least anyway, maybe they fixed most of its flaws now but it's still likely at 7/10 at most.
>>
>>741764351
>i just got into rain world and sunk like 40 hours over the last week in the base game, is the dlc worth playing? i assumed that the game's old enough now that updates were finished
yes, the dlc is mostly good. It's just a ton of more content, if you liked the base game you'll like the dlcs.
>>
>>741764417
>The Watcher is (or was) pretty damn bad, for a solid year at least anyway, maybe they fixed most of its flaws now but it's still likely at 7/10 at most.
have you played watcher since the last big update? it was unfinished on release, it's not bad now at all

This thread reminded me that slugcat has a perfectly natural diet.
>>
>>741764457
I haven't checked it since they added that weird flying furry dragon that vagueposts, no.
Honestly the initial experience and second chance after waiting for more updates soured it too much for me to want to go check it again.

Sorry m8 it was totally my fault the lizard instakills me the second I enter the screen. Why does this game do static screens anyway, it makes no fucking sense to facecheck something that should be right in front of me. Hell in the same sky islands there's a part where you have to do platforming offscreen.

NTA
>Stuck between two raindeer sections
>Shelter failure
>Have to wait 5 minutes so the heavy rain doesn't push me into the murder grass
>Wait for rain deer
>No rain deer is coming
>Use bait
>Still nothing
>Use more bait
>Hear the "got baited" sound effect but nothing is coming
>Use all bait available in different ways
>Nothing
>Die to rain because shelter is broken
>Have to wait 5 minutes for heavy rain to disappear
>Spend 6 minutes waiting and fucking around with bait
>Die
>Repeat
>Die
>Repeat
>Uninstall downpour
>Get across instantly
Yeah that was 100% a softlock. For some reason heavy rain bugs out the rain deer. It's understandable, the games only out for 9 years. Can't expect the Devs to fix game breaking bugs in such a short timespan.
>>
I think saying "skill issue" is missing the point of the game entirely desu. This isn't Super Meat Boy or some other precision platformer, you absolutely cannot outskill every obstacle in your path. Sometimes a lizard is waiting on the other side of a pipe, sometimes you get gangbanged by Scavs, sometimes the cycle is arbitrarily shorter than usual and you get rained on.

What the game is trying to impart on you isn't "any problem can be solved by breaking out your fingerless gamer gloves and upping your APM" it's that "sometimes bullshit out of your control happens and you need to know how to not rage quit".

Patience, resilience and emotional stability will serve you much better in beating Rain World than memorising the movement documents.
>>
>>741764640
>though it resembles vegetation, this "fruit" is the chrysalis of a bug
Well shit. He's even more based than I expected.
>>
>>741764904
If you bring Moon stuff like the blue fruits she tells you random trivia like that, there's neat stuff sometimes
>>
>>741764181
Punishing the player is not a softlock.
>>
>>741764793
I can appreciate the concept to an extent but I think game developers should respect the player's time, I don't think any game where you can potentially get stuck for a few hours because of rng is a good game.
>>
>>741765897
I'd argue making a game worth playing IS respecting the players time far more than making some accessible and ultimately meaningless.
>>
This is the worst almost softlock I had. It was possible but completely fucked. The only way forward without a grappling worm was past this fucking centipede which persisted through multiple cycles. For some reason the centipede can't quite reach the exit that's right in front of it.
>The water kills you
>The only safe spot is still slightly within tentacle grass range
>You need to duck while the centipede is trying to escape to hit it with a spear
>Every second the tentacle grass pull gets stronger and you'll have to walk through it again since the water is death
>The centipede can tank three spear hits
It may not sound that hard but it required almost perfect execution to not get electrocuted or sucked to death.

That was the moment I activated Dev tools.
>>
>>741766010
an obstacle is not a softlock
seriously do any of you know what that word means?

>ctrl f "skill issue" 3 results

this is a good sign that a game is absolute dogshit, because requiring you to open and read a wiki and play like a speedrun tranny to actually progress is indicative of a terrible game
>>
>>741764050
The original game is as good as it gets. We need no stinking dlc.
>>
>>741766218
you don't need to read the wiki at all
>>
>>741766010
Can't you just bait the centipede into the worm grass and let it get dragged then go in the pipe?
Or bait it on land in general then run in the water?
>>
>>741766218
Put more effort in it, you're barely trying.
>>
I've been filtered by this game 3 times now but I still want to give it another shot
>>
>>741766027
>almost softlock
Do you not know what "Almost" means you illiterate troglodyte
>>
>>741766350
This is funny since "trying too hard to be effortless" was one of the faults of the ancients.
>>
>>741763901
My wife beat this game in a single sitting, you are actually worse at games than a mother who barely plays any vidya and has terrible eyesight. How is this even possible?
>>
>>741764181
>I say its pretty softlocking to (some shit completely unrelated to softlocking)
what's with zoomers and wanting to redefine words to fit whatever retarded bullshit they happen to be feeling at the moment?
most feminine generations to ever exist; estrogen levels through the roof
>>
>>741766453
your wife beat a 20+ hour game in a singe setting?
>>
>>741766218
You use a wiki to play games? Embarassing.
>>
>>741766486
20 hours? Are you okay? Her first playthrough took around 6 hours. My hunter runs take about 1-2. It's not a very long game unless you just ignore the waypoint guy.
>>
>>741766402
A softlock is by definition something where you cannot progress. There's no such thing as an "almost" softlock
What you've just described is called "a video game"
>>
>>741766317
The centipede didn't move at all. It just wiggled around and occasionally moved its head towards the pipe. I assume it was stuck trying to escape but couldn't reach the exit.
>>
>>741766609
They got dogshit vertical vision and it's basically just a small rectangle in front of their head if I recall, depending on how they're angled they won't see you unless you're directly next to them.
If you got debris throw some at it or try to make a lot of noise, I don't remember them being deaf.
>>
>>741764718
that's an extremely unlucky scenario my man

Whats with whiny cocksuckers being unable to understand terms used in subjective and humorous context? Sorry, your honor, it appears this wasnt, in fact, technically the right definition of softlock, I rescind all accusations made towards video entertainment product under the trademark "Rain World"(c) made on an academic research forum of a mongolian image website

>>
>>741766712
I tried everything I could think of. I threw rocks at it and near it. I even got it with a spear. I tried fruit and life animals to lure it. I even tried to get leeches into the water because I was so out of ideas. It never changed much from its position.

If I had to take a guess I'd say it was stuck in some kind of panic mode that only ends when it escapes which it couldn't do.
>>
>>741767074
rain world is my favorite game and i don't think it's flawless at all. it's got some pretty glaring flaws, frankly.
>>
>>741767074
It's not perfect, it has plenty of flaws, but it's one of the best games ever made and there's nothing quite like it.
>>
>>741767074
Rain World has flaws but if your complaint is that its too hard or that it "softlocks" you when it objectively doesn't then you're obviously just talking shit.
>>
>>741767029
This is one of the few times there's only one path because the alternate path is a one way exit. It's the middle pipe in this pic.

Not even those jumping animals can get that high and if you think the grappling worm can help than believe me, I tried. Both paths to this section go through water and the grappling worm drowns extremely fast so there's no way to bring one.
>>
>>741767639
damn, really unlucky then man
>>
>>741767339
It's a pretty generic roguelite platformer all things considered, whats unique about it aside from being semi-open world?
>>
>>741763901
>OOPS LOOKS LIKE YOU GONNA BE HERE A WHILE FARMING FOOD PAL
If you're ever in that position, then yeah, you should probably slow down and learn the game.
>>
>>741764718
yeah that is some bullshit
thank you for delivering where OP couldn't
>>
my first playthrough i went up through chimney canopy all the way through sky islands, farm arrays and then wound up back at outskirts without achieving anything. and then i went through drainage system and got stuck at the gate to subterranean which i think pretty much is a softlock because of how hard it is to get back through the underwater sections without air bubbles. so i just left the game for like a year and when i came back beat the intended route no problem because this time i actually followed the yellow guy instead of randomly running around like a retard. probably the most kino game of all time imo. if you cant appreciate the game for actually having the balls to let you fuck up like that you're just a pussy who should stick to mario bros.
>>
>>741768471
the combat is very unique, the movement has loads of depth, the visuals are amazing, the enemy ai is very unique, its not a roguelite at all, you're a fucking retard.
>>
>>741768471
have you played any other platformer? it's very... un-video gamey, in some ways to its detriment.
>>
>>741770456
Same shit happened to me but in Shaded Citadel. The whole place is a noob trap because the easy route on top leads you to shore and circles back to outskirts and you're actually supposed to go through spider rape underneath. Which is impossible unless you get a lantern, which is impossible unless you trade/kill a scavenger, and then its still impossible without light bombs shich you must carry from the top layer all the way down in your stomach.
>Dude you're supposed to follow yellow dick
Considering that 99% of time he just shows you food/threat sources I thought its an early area holding hand and didn't think much when he disappeared
>>
>>741763713
The game felt bad to play so I flushed it. I'm usually open to difficult games, but even from a control perspective it wasn't enjoyable.
>>
>>741770759
every time ive beaten the game including the first time i went through shaded and ended up in shoreline just fine without ever finding a lantern, i dont get what your issue was. when you're in shoreline you can get to lttm just fine. getting through shaded in the dark was tough but not as hard as other areas.
>>
>>741770759
i dont think ive ever blinded the robot chickens. just run when they're not there bro.
>>
>>741763901
survival of the fittest
>>
Wait, so there is more content on new playthroughs?
>>
>>741770537
>the combat is very unique,
You pick stuff and throw it...?
> the movement has loads of depth
You're talking about the "move tech" which are essentially bugs in the code that calculates movement procedurally. Core movement is very simple.
>the visuals are amazing
Its okay, there isn't much to look at as most of the game takes place on what looks like a garbage heap.
>the enemy ai is very unique
Monsters sonetimes fight each other, mindblowing. Any full-fledged roguelike (Elona, Cataclysm, Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld etc) blows it out the water when it comes to AI
>its not a roguelite at all
Mayhaps. I still think its roguelite in spirit, the game plays like Spelunky or Isaac, short frantic runs through highly challenging semi-random environments
>>
>>741766218
>"git gud" = open a wiki

I'm fucking shit at platformers and I beat Rain World multiple times just fine
"skill issue" has nothing to do with it.
>>
>>741764718
most bullshit area in the game, sometimes I clear it in two cycles and sometimes it takes me longer than any other area in the game thanks to the retarded deer
>>
>>741774012
>You're talking about the "move tech" which are essentially bugs in the code that calculates movement procedurally.
what? backflips into rolls into leaps aren't bugs in the code
>>
>>741766453
Your wife's bull beating the game for her doesn't count
>>
>>741764718
The Reindeer areas aren't good, from an objective design standpoint.
Its a gimmick puzzle that's cool the first time through, but every subsequent trip makes it increasingly irritating.
There really should be an alternate route through that part of farm arrays.
>>
>>741776854
These are basic movement option you'd find in every metroidvania. I thought you meant things like fast pole climbing or storing turns, which are fun to learn, but definitely belong to glitch category
>>
>>741763713
Do you really have to start the thread with an intentionally retarded post? I'm sure there's more than enough anons on /v/ who are eager to earnestly discuss Rain World. There's no need for this.
>>
>>741777645
basic movement options in metroidvanias are double jumps and (air) dashes, and a super dash
also you have them from the moment you're given control of your character. it's not a metroidvania. this is like if you find a gun in the game and go "meh, who cares, you have guns in shooters". the point is that it's not that, but you can learn to do it that way.
