Was it kino
Yes, best game in the series.
>>741773035Yes, but it's also dragged down by having probably the worst boss in the entire franchise.
>>741775397Origin probably has the least amount of obnoxious bosses in the series, actually. There's nothing even remotely as bad as Ys I Vagullion or as time-wastingly trivial as the Ys I centipede. Ironically it has far superior versions of both those boss fights instead.
>>741775397This fucker is the sole reason I was never able to beat nightmare boss rush.
>>741775829Oh absolutely, every other boss is a treat. But that one specifically is absolutely wretched, I really do mean that it might be the worst in the franchise. Yuna and Claw are tolerable, but fighting him as Hugo is probably the most infuriating thing I've ever experienced in videogames.
>>741773035I had fun until the you must die mode.
>>741776072Hugo in general kind of sucks but even then there's nothing in Origin that made me come close to as pissed as original Vagullion, Dark Fact or even that faggot fire dragon from Oath in Felghana.
>>741775275I enjoyed Origins a lot when it came out, but playing Ys VIII right now and I unironically wanted it to have more chapters.
>>741776386I honestly feel Ys games benefit from brevity, not unlike survival horror games. With turn-based JRPGs you can have an incredibly long game and it doesn't wear on me but with ARPGs the combat is constantly being put into focus and after a certain point its flaws and limitations will invariably start to get on my nerves. Plus frankly Falcom have never exactly been masterclass writers when it comes to complex narrative or characterization. Ys VIII is so long and protracted that I've never actually gotten around to finishing it. Didn't get stuck, I just lost interest.
>>741775397>worst boss in the entire franchisethat's magna diga. i think falcom just sucks at sand-based bosses in general desu
I started Ys with that one, did I fuck up?I enjoy it a lot.
>>741777157i started with it cause it's the only game on xbox
>>741773035I finished the first two characters but never got around to the last one. That was four years ago now. I just recall being very annoyed at a sandy area
>>741777157You can jump into any Ys game without context and you're mostly fine, though occasionally they'll refer back to earlier games. Origin is a prequel that kind of assumes you played I and II but you can do the reverse order and it still works.
>>741775397My current Nightmare save data with her is stuck right here. Back in 2018 I had beaten the game on Nightmare with Toal, but I can't beat this boss.
I played 1 and 2 recently. Waiting to grab the rest on sale.Should I play VI next?
>>741773035i prefer the bump combat games but origin is good too
>>7417810516 is a bit rough compared to Oath and Origin but still fine in a vacuum.
>>741782113That's why I thought VI next, as it's the oldest gameplay wise
>>741781051>>741782458Since you are already on gameplay order, then VI next. If you have enough money, get VI, Felghana, and Origin and play them in that order.
>>741773035Massively overrated, the game expects you to replay it like 3-6 times but playing the different characters does not change up the experience enough to make it feel worth while so for a game that wants to be replayed a lot it has fuck all replay value. Absolutely mogged by Oath which is better in every single way.
>>741781051>>741782458You could also play Dawn next if you want more bump combat.
>>741783384can i just beat it once and move on
>>741783483Yes I would say that's the best way to play it. But given there's a character you literally can't even use unless you've beaten the game once that will be unavailable to you.
>>741783421>more bump combatHonestly I think I'm good. I thought Ys 2 already made bump combat waaay too easy and boring outside of the final boss. IDK if I wanna play anymore run round labyrinth-centric games for a bit either
>>741783483the true ending requires beating it with the character unlocked after finishing it once, so ideally you go through at least twice.
>>741783640After 1 and 2 you can pretty much go anywhere. I liked exploring the different styles from the addition of a jump button to the removal of it for a guard in proto party based games to the addition of one again later down the line. Just go with what you find interesting. The games changed a lot but certain things remain the same.
