So, why is everyone(outside of /v/ at least) treating Valve with kiddy gloves on the Steam Machines?
>>741773041Most people see the price tag, think "damn, that sucks" and then move on with their lives instead of having a 24+ hour long meltdown.
>>741773041WIthout Valve PC gaming wouldnt even exist.
>>741773041Its just a mediocre mini-pc
>>741773041because they have to give this slop which is the equivalent of a base non pro ps5 the same rating as a ps5. these tech journalists have been bamboozled into giving console machine scores to this when they should be prorating it according to the desktop living room benchmark valve set themselves and with value proposition.
>>741773041Valve fumbled.Nobody is defending their dogshit marketing strategy regarding the cube.People are defending more Steam rather than Valve itself because it just so happen that the competition regarding PC storefront is utterly atrocious compared to it, despite said competitions having more often than not a budget magnitudes bigger than Valve. They tried selling something and it's going to bomb hard, it's not the first time that happens with one of their products.
>>741773292>this. The 50/150 price increase is more infuriating because its still in the range of making you question if you're going to get it or not. The Steam Machine is such an obvious pass that no one really bothers past making fun of it
>>741773041With consoles they are meant to be subsidized and sold at a loss, with the profit being made up from game sales, but you can't do this with the steam machine because it's a full PC, and people will just use it to mine crypto, and throw it in bot/render farms. Back in the day the PS3 had a selling point of allowing you to install linux, but they quickly removed it because of that very reason, which resulted in them getting a class action lawsuit.
>>741773041Do kids still not understand that even at 900 dollars the PS5 is sold at a huge loss because they know they have you by the balls For all the accusations of Valve being a monopoly I can't just go to GOG on my fucking PS5 and buy games there if I want so where is the outrage there?
>>741778441Ok, but how come you can get prebuilts and even laptops with better specs for the same price. There's a bunch of 5060 laptops with way better CPUs going around for under $1100, and those include fairly good screens
>>741773041The SM would've been priced reasonably like the SD had it not been for this crisis. Microsoft contributed to creating it so no one gives them sympathy. Sony sucks balls. Nintendo's prices are reasonable for anything other than their games.
>>741773041Who are you quoting?
>>741778784Without linking them here we can’t say anything. I’m guessing they are A) underpowered and you’re misrepresenting them, B) old stock from before the pc part meltdown that was t price adjusted for some reason, C) barely cheaper and in a much larger format. This is the first major hardware release sourced from the standard market since AI fucked everything, and ignorant people just have sticker shock.
>>741773041The difference is that Valve wants to make a profit while console have been selling at a loss for over a decade. Consoles exist to rope people into an economy that's fundamentally hostile to them, like paying for online. The Steam Machine is a PC that you then own, can even upgrade and don't have to pay anything in addition for.
>>741779436https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1911070-REG/acer_anv16s_71_71bs_16_nitro_16s_gaming.htmlFirst one that came up, 1tb 5070 mobile plus a way stronger CPU. Based on the benchmarks so far, this should be a good 70% faster than the Steam Machine>B) old stock from before the pc part meltdown that was t price adjusted for some reason, The 50 series laptops were launched during the memory crisis>C) barely cheaper and in a much larger formatIt's a fucking laptop, how on earth could it have a larger form factor than a desktop? If you close the lid you can slide it into any shelf
>>741773041the gabe cube is a PCif you want a different PC you can just buy a different oncewith consoles there's no alternative, if sony says you want to pay $600 for a PS5 to play PS5 games you can't just go somewhere else and get a different PS5, they set the price for the entire platform
>>741778741You can buy from retailers.
>>741778851>The SM would've been priced reasonably like the SD had it not been for this crisisWhy isn't it priced reasonably compared to every other piece of hardware for sale in the middle of the same crisis?
>>741779917And that retailer bought the boxed PS5 games from who?Why do you retards pretend to be ignorant to try to make a point, you just look stupid
>>741780139Because it can't sell infinity subscriptions to you.
>>741780146that's the internet in a nutshell
I saw the price tag and thought "what's even the market for this" and then moved on with my life like a normal personI've been a lot harsher on the switch 2 but honestly that isn't even about the console's price tag itself (though admittedly $500 is a bit more than I'd want to pay) it's mostly cause of them doing shit like charging $80 for mario kart
>>741780204And prebuilts and laptops can?
>>741780471have you seen the bloatware that comes on those things? you'd be surprised at how many normalfags eat it up and pay for it
Valve isn't a hardware company so trying to make a decent retardproof linux PC in the current electronics market is a reasonable excuse for the crazy price of the gabe cube. Conversely MS/Sony/Nintendo ARE hardware companies who have a financial structure which is built to sell the hardware at a loss and recoup costs via their locked down ecosystem. Also you don't need a gabe cube to play PC games. You can play on a shitty laptop or a super rig you built prior to the AIpocalypse. The gabe cube being expensive does not affect 99.99% of PC gamers, the cost of consoles going up does effect everyone who wants to play a console game.
>>741780471Prebuilds and laptops usually secure better contracts with hardware manufacturers because spoiler: they're buying this shit all the time, not for just one-offs.
>>741773041Valve actually cares for their customers and fosters a good relationship between corporation and customer, so in perspective, even tho they slipped up with the cube's pricing, it's nowhere near as bad as what Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo do. Just so you have an idea, Sony outright steals your games if you fail a 30 day online check in, and by steal I don't mean they lock their access until you log back in, in fact you have to buy your games all over again. Not even in our worst nightmares would Valve sink so low, Valve at most makes some silly slip ups, not the outright evil acts of the other vidya companies
>>741780983>Just so you have an idea, Sony outright steals your games if you fail a 30 day online check in, and by steal I don't mean they lock their access until you log back in, in fact you have to buy your games all over againI immediately believe literally anything I read online award recipient
>>741781185It is true tho, there were multiple threads not only here, but other online spaces discussing this issue, there were even screenshots proving the existence of the 30 day deadline, unless you live under a rock it's impossible you missed it.
>>741779781lol you’re delusional. That’s 300 dollars more and won’t get half the performance. Those laptops are on par with decks. Are you an actual shill for Acer?
>>741780471Prebuilt and laptop companies are still exhausting old stock at only slightly inflated prices to not shock the market, nobody wants to be the first because of idiots like you. In a few months everything will adjust to the new normal.
>>741781723NTA but it was a one time online check after the refund period so that you couldn't refund it and go offline
>>741773041The Steam Machine is an optional luxury item that people can choose to buy if they want it or choose not to buy it if they don't. Consoles are mandatory purchases if you want to play the games on them. You can't play Switch 2 games if you don't have a Switch 2, so you're forced to buy a Switch 2 if you want to play any of the games that are only available at it. It hurts a lot more when you're forced to pay like 600 bucks to play 2 games.
>>741781756>>741781756>That’s 300 dollars moreHow is 1200 dollars 300 more than 1050? And considering this already includes a keyboard and screen, you'd at least have to compare it to the cost of the Steam Machines with the controller>and won’t get half the performance. The 5070 mobile benchmarks above the desktop 5060, which is itself on average 70% faster than the Steam Machine's mobile 6700(250% faster if ray tracing is involved). The CPU is also over twice as fast in synthetic benchmarks
>>741782814>sale pricelol>but my CPU benchmarks so high, why is it so much slower in a laptop??!!LMAO
>>741782981The Steam Machines literally uses laptop parts and a laptop power draw(on the low end of that, too)
>>741773041Valve is selling the machine at cost or as close to cost as possible. Consoles are subsidized.
>>741783103200W isn't on the low end of laptop power draw, it's at the very top end of it. Only high end gaming laptops go above that. Most laptops draw less than 120W even my stinkpad workstation from yesteryear only needs 90W.
Lay off valve man, Gabe's a good guy once you get past the long list of things he did to destroy gamingHe's earned those yachts and super mansions
>>741783103Have you ever looked at a console motherboard? It's a laptop in a box
>>741773041Paid posters from seamonkey sweatshops.
Nobody gives a shit about the retarded baby cube, but it's being used as a vector by the unbelievably transparent attempt to go after Valve. Maybe they should have told the jeets they're paying to chill out the weeks before this shit was announced so it wasn't quite so fucking obvious. ((((they)))) cannot abide one of the largest stakeholders in the largest entertainment industry being private. Also probably timmy pissing into that fire as always
>>741783229>Most laptops draw less than 120WThe mobile 5070 alone on the model you linked can draw more than that
>>741773041thats not my experience, one streamer said and I quote "yeah right" and "and this is ONLY steam games, no epic?" and another said "ram prices are ridiculous so it makes sense but I won't be buying this, not sure who would over a rig"its getting panned hard, which is deserved because NVIDIA and friends need to stop selling out to AI data centers and price kiking consumer hardware that includes home pc gaming pc and business hardware so the cost is rising for everyone BUT the "elite" who can go fuck themselves
>>741773041People outside of here don't take the price into account, hopefully they aren't neets. Here we compare the prices to the alternatives so it looks like shit
>>741783539That's a shit tier gamer laptop where portability remains in the theoretical realm. Like I said, only high end gaming laptops go over that. Which that is.
for $1300 is the 2tb version alright? I built my first PC for $800 but that was over a decade ago. For $1300 can I really get a mini ITX with better specs?
>>741773041because nobody with a brain gives a shit about consoles or steam machines.
>>741784041>where portability remains in the theoretical realmNot exactly, from 2023 onwards laptops usually include a less powerful integrated GPU as a fallback for battery use, basically if you unplug it you can tell it to operate at the performance level of a PC handheld and get a good few hours of battery use with very low power draw. >only high end gaming laptops go over that. Which that isHigh end gaming laptops(5070ti and up, 12+ GB of VRAM) are well over $2500 atm. Anyway, all of this is beside the point. The point is that a laptop in the same price range as the Steam Machine will *vastly* outperform it in every front
>>741784457Yeah you can. Well, I don't know about MiniITX since SFF builds are a fucking pain in the ass, I don't want to build a parts list for one nor would I ever want to build one. mATX is easy though.
>>741784457You’ll always be able to build a pc cheaper than a prebuilt. Though the SM is smaller than a Mini ITX and has better thermal management so you won’t be able to build something identical.
>>741773041Can I open my email on a ps5 and print a document? Can I torrent the first season of Seinfeld on a ps5?These PC vs. console comparisons will always be fucking retarded, you cannot even legitimately open the web browser on a ps5.
>>741773041Valve isn't going to make it so that all the video games you were looking forward to are exclusive to this system, so there is nobody who has any incentive to hate it. Opinions range from positive to indifferent.
>>741784845You can run Linux on a PS5 so I guess you could do all of those th6
>>741773041>Why do cultists not attack their cult?
>>741784971Not exactly, you need a specific firmware version and it's not the latest one.
>>741784971>you can do something that literally 99% of the entire console userbase will never doLook man, you're technically right, but it just isn't reality.
>>741785075If you don't update it out of the box you should be good though, no? I actually considered it for a second when I saw the news
>>741785183The firmware version you need is from 2021. The ones that are sold today don't come with firmware that's 5 years out of date.
