I see that a lot of gens here are for gacha games. HSR, Genshin, Limbus company, reverse 1999, blue archive, uma musume, fate grand order, azure lane, arknights endfield, wuthering waves, Nikke, etc. I've never played one but I'm curious. What gacha do you like best and why?

The few times there was something compelling they dropped it like it was nuclear waste as soon as a patch cycle completed to tell you another unrelated story and sell you a different character. The main character was a hollow shell that barely spoke and had no meaningful characterization.ZZZ and HSR are improvements, but still have a lot of deep flaws. I can recommend them if you like their specific wheelhouses -- quickswap DMC-lite and style or turn based with actually interesting but inconsequential lore for philosofags.Wuthering Waves started as a more mature genshit clone with combat a mix between ZZZ and Genshin. Lots of exploration but a blank slate MC and half ass story/stakes with even worse voice acting. Then suddenly around their third update it's like they decided to make a different game inside of the one they had. I've played hundreds of games in my life, am well read and greatly enjoy movies, I've seen and read enough that I rarely get emotional involvement anymore just from repetition. Some of the story arcs in WuWa still fucked me up emotionally. The gameplay is good, sometimes great for what it is -- just don't go into it looking to be upset about what it isn't.

Arknights I want to say is really good but I haven't read an event in like four years.The most joy I've gotten from Gatchage was probably Princess Connect but that was nothing to do with the gameplay or story and entirely cause of the guild system getting me a friend group... That disowned me for posting NSFW memes.Azur Lane and GFL were both very generous for outfits and ships and characters. They also had pure kino events. Both games I think are close to EoS though.As for Mahoyo games... I did play Genshin and it was pretty good whilst playing but it's not got a lot to keep you coming back. Also the story shit itself after around Inazuma. HSR peaked in the first planet and never recovered. And the rest are kinda just overanimated TikTok slop.Oh yeah, and Umamusume is slop that's like four years behind JP and didn't include any of the added quality of life so another skip.I'm not sure if there are any other gatchage new or coming out that's any good.

Characters that can stay relevant do stay relevant and aren't tossed into oblivion for the next month of gibs. The main character develops into an actual person and is held to account for their (his, male rover in English starts off bland but is tied for the best voiceover with the original Chinese) actions. The game explores themes that engage you and the characters themselves realistically -- devotion to family, sacrifice, suicide, and fear of failure, just to name a few. It's also not afraid to use diversity in the right way -- no forced nogs, but a woman in a wheelchair done right. You're never compelled to feel sorry for her or give her extra privilege. Flaws that deepen characters instead of defining them. The antagonists are well done as well, often serving a dual or even triple service that compel the story, draw literary corollaries, and make you question what's actually right.
