Stuff with over 1400 attack was relatively rare if you were just buying the early starters and boosters, and if you were trying to run a specific type, your options were even more limited. Every deck was loaded with filler monsters that didn't serve much purpose beyond getting sacrificed to summon something stronger.I think the appeal of fusion cards was just the gimmick, which is something that has been around in monster games and JRPGs for a long time. It's just that, in a card game where it costs you the hand advantage, it kinda sucks, but the meta hadn't really been solidified back then. Older collectors could go online and nab 3 Gemini Elves with a paycheck from their McJob, but kids were stuck with Celtic Guardian and Beaver Warrior, unless they got lucky.

Sasuke Samurai was one of the first rare cards I ever pulled, and I loved its effect, but it started to make my friend paranoid about putting things face down. Then I got a whole fuckton of book of moons from pharonic guardian, so I basically always ran three of them.You could use them to reset your flip monsters to get their effects again, but you could also use them to flip your opponents monsters after they had declared an attack, which would effectively cancel it, then they wouldn't be able to flip it back up until their next turn. You could basically fuck with your opponent any time they try to target a face up monster with anything, because they waste their card and the effect is cancelled because there's no longer a target. I think it could even counter trap hole. Then you could use magician of faith to get book of moon back, and use book of moon to reactivate magician of faith. Honestly it was one of my favorite spell cards, but I feel like it was extremely underappreciated for its versatility.
