Nioh is good and feels unique enough to not be derivative because of the combat.
AI Limit is my favourite anime Souls, and actually focuses a lot on exploration like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
I still haven't seen a single Soulslike with invasions/coop mechanics on par with any of From's own titles.

LotF2 (1*) [* - 2023] feels close to Demon's Souls than DS1 / DS2 for me. They tried to do the "interconnected world" thing, but it basically got aborted by retarded playtesters and the design was still different from DS1's (imagine a DS1 where Valley of the Drakes and Darkroot Basin basically just existed to connect you to Firelink Shrine).

But it felt good to play through a Soulslike with fundamentally solid, challenging level design. Manse of the Hallowed Brothers is up there with some of the better FromSoft levels. Not the best, but still.

I'd recommend No Rest for the Wicked but the game is getting overhauled in October on its official release to basically remove the souls-like leveling system for some class based system.

Otherwise its souls but isometric A-RPG style. Ignore the DEI sloppa "diversity" approach to character designs the writing is so good you'll forget about it.

Last Hero of Nostalgaia is the best one I've played.
All of the others miss essential things about combat, level design, and difficulty and end up pretty eh.
Nostalgaia itself isn't great, but it's better than any other I've played because on a fundamental level they "get" it, and awakening weapons is an interesting system. Moreso in concept than actual execution, but credit where it's due

There is a very particular way you can do 2-d souls and short little games like Momodora do it far better than S&S at capturing this feel while realizing the game is a 2-d platformer.

The Boss fights in Salt and Sanctuary are basically all big, mostly stationary monters with big sweeping hit box blocks manifesting over aoe attacks.

Everything is a dodge roll through a hit box and while roll-slopping through a 3D game includes factors like end-roll placement, S&S it does not. Basically what works in 3d doesn't work well in 2d. Shit like the three faced red clay prince boss fight is literally "half the screen is a hit box, roll through me!" and it was just so boring at a certain point.

Momodora on the other hand made the character feel like a souls character in 2d but kept the boss fights feeling way more like it was aware it was 2d games. plenty of projectiles and attacks you couldn't just roll through. Rolling felt more like a distance gainer than an essential I-frame. If you're making 2-d souls your dodge should be more about space and less about I-frames.

It does that thing that DND does where you have races but then within those races are "pedigrees" resembling races of humans.
Sacra is loaded with random negro characters with white man haircuts and British accents. There are a few that look Asian as well.

If a game is going to do this, they need to make it like TeS where there is some explanation for the "multiculturalism" (I.E an imperial trade hub) and to define the different races of men.

Instead it's basically three races but you can't tell them apart because some Dasha are negro, some main landers are Asian. Very much "Your nation is your people" coded, incredibly cringe.

That aside, while I never beat it anticipating the overhaul, it wasn't the primary plot of the game but the character writing was some of the best I've seen in a while. A lot of great "sayings" and word play really sell the world to you.

You're just baring witness to the warring states period through the lens that the war is causing the dead to become demons via magic stones and somebody has to clean it up.
The latter somehow doesn't feel relevant despite being the main thing you're doing all game, because it's more about educating you about how cool Nobunaga was or some shit

IIRC the mixed reviews are due to an issue with one of the DLC bosses that has a tendency to glitch out in its final phase, making it unbeatable unless you kill yourself and try again which sucks even more due to the lame phases before it.

Lies of P is the best example
AI Limit I personally loved. Good level design, cool mechanics and weapons and combat, bosses were a lil too easy
Another Crabs Treasure, cool hybrid of soulsy combat and 3D Platforming. A little too easy to get overpowered but soulful, surprisingly good writing at points, and the early/midgame at least feels well balanced.
There's also Khazan which I only played the demo of, seemed good
Nine Sols if you want to stray even further. It's more of a 2D seki-like than anything

Asterigos was pretty good for the most part. The only downside was that you could have multiple save files and just save anywhere nerfing the difficulty a lot. Plus, the souls system is a lot less unified since killing enemies just gives you currency like the SOuls games, but that currency isn't used to increase your stats like in the Souls games so there's less thought put into whether you should level up with all the souls you have or buy necessary items or something like that.


But I like stories set with Greek myth or Greek culture in mind and the game was fun, the story was nice and the MC was a cute ginger chick so 7/10.

Also like someone stated before, Stellar Blade even though that one felt more like Sekiro than anything.

And as for the satire part, the dev genuinely doesn't understand the difference between satire and parody/referential humor.
As said before, the game is more in the vein of Abobo's Big Adventure where you fuck shit up from countless other games with some amusing (and sometimes surprisingly elaborate) details and references here and there but also a few Earthworm Jim-esque lolsorandumb parts that don't really hit.

I am a big fan of the original Mortal Shell. Very short game, but quite fun to learn even if the balance is fucked (goes from very very hard to absurdly easy) also has the best filter I've ever seen with Fallgrim. Utter labyrinth of a first area with very few actually distinct landmarks, takes a whole playthrough to really learn it
