Is it even possible to run SteamOS on your normal computer? I thought it was only meant for handhelds
>>741804914Not yet but they plan to release the build
>>741804914yes but it doesn't really offer that much more for a regular desktop PC than something like cachyOS or bazzite, unless you plan to use suspend and resume a lot on desktop
>>741804914The Steam Deck is a computer
>>741805105I don't think steamos is ever going to be a proper desktop OS
Should I change from windows 11 to steamos guys??
>>741804914You can, but support is spotty because it's only meant to run on a certain AMD GPU with very specific hardware which is only in the Steam Deck, Steam Machine or Legion Go S.https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-4227You don't actually have to install SteamOS. Bazzite aims for a similar kind of experience with broader compatibility meant for common desktops. Any Arch Linux install will also work fine; you can use CachyOS or any other Arch-derived distro as well.
>>741805680nah just use Bazzite instead for now
Why should I use Linux? That shit blows on the desktop.
>>741808406This is for those who want to carry out OS maintenance 24/7 instead of playing games.
It's built on Arch so you could just use Arch
>>741804914Isn't it just Arch? Just use archinstall like a normal person>b-but my UIIsn't that just big picture mode?
>>741808257>>741808392Bazzite is garbage as a desktop OS. Immutable trash does not belong in the desktop. CachyOS is where it's at.
>>741805105https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-4227Its already out for amd systems.
>>741804914you'll be raped with compatibility issues if you try to use more than the 3rd world hardware that linux users live off of
>>741804914of course, i stopped using it because installing mods capcom games is a pain and you cant run lol..
>>741812361If you use Archinstall to install arch on your first attempt then you shouldn't be using it. It's not suitable for your needs.
>>741808406>Why should I use Linux? That shit blows on the desktop.I try to avoid proprietary software as much as possible (Yes I know Steam & games are proprietary). I use Debian and haven't really had any big issues with it. A few small problems every now and then and ChatGPT helps me fix them (Hasn't tried to make me rm -rf so far). And it's not like Windows doesn't have any problems
>>741804914Maintaining a Linux distro as it turns out is a lot of work and Valve is too lazy.
>>741804914SteamOS isn't a thingIt's just a shitty GUI over arch linux
>>741812806SteamOS is vastly different from Arch.
>>741812859SteamOS is what I said
>>741812608but nvidia is third worldtheir jeeted connector has caused a 10x spike in warranty claims
>>741812879It's not Arch with a "shitty GUI". The absurdity of that statement is multi-level. To begin with, Arch isn't even a specific monolith. It's bloated LFS with a package manager.
As of 3.8 they're basically rolling that out. It will first support AMD GPUs and will go from there.
>>741813110You seem to think what I said gives you permission to argue. This isn't a debate. I said what I said. I am accurate. Your opinion matters not.
>>741813036its not nvidias fault your thin wrist can't push a connector in all the way my nigger
>>741813240That's a weird way of coping with being wrong, but I'm not gonna question it. Whatever helps keep you from breaking down mentally
>>741804914You can, but it's not in a good state for general desktop PC use and hardware right now.Valve is working with Nvidia and Intel to make SteamOS viable for a wide range of hardware, but they're not quite there yet. I expect that SteamOS for general PCs will not be released until they've reached that goal.
>>741813278it's nvidia's fault for creating a jeeted cable with lower safety margins and no inherent load balancingthere are no advantages to 12vhpwr besides tidying up the cables and saving penniesit's a faggot cable with the spec cutting costs
>>741812784>And it's not like Windows doesn't have any problemsAt least there are much fewer of them than any Linux.
>>741813629damage controlling winjeet lmao
>>741804914there's no point since windows has better performance
>>741813629That's not true. Windows has easily just as many problems, they are easier to solve by googling symptoms, though. If you don't find a solution with the symptoms on the other hand, Windows problems are literal nightmare tier.
>>741812492Bazzite is great as a normal desktop, and immutable is convenient for the average user.
>>741813796uh huh
>>741813818Windows has no problem when Linux needs a Windows emulator to run at least one game.
>>741813872that makes no sense, isn't steamos running a compatibility layer? it's impossible for the performance to be higher than native
>>741814064compatibility layer that's leaner than the jeetware on windows
>>741814025Linux existing makes it so Windows never has problems? Amazing.
>>741813872sorry im not a weirdo and have an nvidia card.
>>741814132maybe, but i assume that's due to w11's memory integrity & kernel mode hardware enforced stack protection
>>741814253how is an OS e waste?
>>741814064The thing is vulkan. The games are translated from directX12 to Vulkan, and many gains can (and are) made on the way.Of course it's not perfect and there are cases where this translation lose speed in the process, but when shit works, shit really works. You get rid of shader compilation stutters as well.
>>741814294Nah, Windows just runs a huge amount of crapware behind the scenes. You won't really notice enough to try to troubleshoot it on a very powerful PC, but it does have an effect which is observable. On a PC which is RAM constrained tho, oh boy do you notice the crapware it randomly runs.
>>741814232>nvidiajeet attempts social shaminglmao
>>741814431You put troonix on overpriced e-waste like steam machine and weak handhelds.
Im running it on my new computer at 4K scaling is great even better than windows 11. It just werks.I just dont see how windows can compete nowadays.
>>741814650and they perform better than windows due to no longer having to deal with durgesh spying on you
>>741804914maybe in 2-3 years.
>>741814764If you are purely consooming (not even ever made a single mod), troonix is for you.
>>741813832Immutable is dogshit for the desktop. This is why CachyOS beats Bazzite on every other performance metric.
>>741814764Do you enjoy playing neofetch? Or should you install windows and start playing games?
>>741814764rich anon setup steamos on a throwaway ssd
>>741815068But games do work doe
>>741815068neofetch is garbage. thats why everyone abandoned it for fastfetch
>>741814902>>741815068winjeet defense force lmao
>>741815273how many times have you posted it already?
>>741814650then install another OS…?
>>741815097Its my main PC im using linux+android only in my house. Don't think I'll go back to windows 11.
>>741815398I didnt say I was rich, but I am since you asked. And when AMD releases the next gen GPU's I'll sell this GPU and buy the newest one running steamOS.
>>741808406Windows has somehow become worse.
>>741815710nvidia buyersnot a single nvidia card is worth the money
>>741815710My friend has an nvidia GPU and he gets worse ghosting using DLSS with less FPS at 1440p in squad then I do with FSR Native AA at 4K on linux.
every nvidia product I’ve ever owned eventually died. every amd product I’ve ever owned still works. food for thought
>>741816235my radeon rx590 died after 2 years while i was playing monhun rise
>>741816545sad rip
>>741804914It's not supported but you can do it. If it doesn't work properly then you're on your own.
>>741804914if you can install steamos you're too good for steamosit does nothing special
>>741804914If it's all AMD, yes.But honestly Bazzite runs better and has easier usability than steam OS that's based on Arch. But zorin, fedora, and mint are absolutely fine as well.
>>741814064Yeah, but it only increases CPU load, not GPU. Practically all games are GPU bound these days so performance can increase. Even on Windows people use DXVK for GTA and Dark Souls to get better performance.
>>741812492What's wrong with immutable systems? The only problem I can think of for a "normal" user is if they want to play around with something like AI image generation. Though, you can kind of work around that by using something like Boxbuddy and Distrobox.
>>741821823GTAIV in particular is drastic the difference.
I was using linux before it was popular.Downloading an OS and installing it without your knowledge or consent was a step too far.I miss win7, but win10 and up is just trash.
>>741822176Are you paid to do this or just mentally ill?
>>741822529He's slowly turning into the barneyfag
