Higher resolution is always better. But you can get by with lower resolutions in some cases.
Below 24'', 1080p will probably be enough
Between 24'' and 27'', 1440p will probably be enough
27'' or larger, 4K

idk i think they are all different because of the map and races. its got a bigger map and more races so its a much different experience. personally i dont like it as much as the first two because its delays reinforcements in 2-4 stack battles by a few minutes during the campaign, as opposed to bringing them in as soon as the battle starts. this caused me a lot of headaches but i was able to overcome it even on legendary difficulty. also end turn takes WAY longer than the other ones again because there are way more races and a bigger map. get it on sale.

Went from 1080/60 to 1440/180 recently and graphically there's seriously barely any difference the extra fps is nice when browsing but in games anything above 120fps is unnoticeable.
No reason to upgrade if your monitor still works.

It can be a meme. It can also not be.

The resolution you need depends on viewing distance and screen size.
On, say, a 14 in laptop monitor, 1080p is excellent. On a 24 in monitor, 1080p is ok but not that crisp. If you were to compare a 24 in 1080p monitor to a 24 in 1440p one, the 1440p monitor would be noticeably sharper-looking.

If you wanted a 32 in TV, 1080p would be perfect. But in something larger, like 65 in, 1080p would be disgusting - you'd need 4K at that size.

I think another reason people misunderstand resolution is the LCD. For example, in the past you could use 1024x768 on a 15 in CRT monitor with a max resolution of 1600x1200, and it'd look ok because the resolution would be displayed like native. Nowadays resolutions have to scale because of LCDs. So let's say you have a 15.6 inch 1080p monitor. 720p at that size should look fine actually. But since 720p doesn't scale properly to 1080p, it's going to look disgusting. So now the person looking at it is going to think "720p = garbage".
