I think that was the generation where diminishing returns really started to set in, picrel released in 2009 and the difference between it and games that came out today does not justify the increase in development time and system requirements

7th gen IS objectively where diminishing returns started to set in, you could noticed huge changes going from late ps2-early ps3 but the changes weren't as extreme going from late ps3-early ps4. Say what you want about actual gameplay and art direction choices but if I was playing god and had to put pure graphical fidelity on pause based on a single era it would be the 7th gen.
