I could chuck a switch game into my ceiling fan and still be able to play it by the time you're finished downloading.

>>741826617
Never had this problem cause I'm not a drooling retard
>>
Also disc drives don't last forever.
>>
I bought a bunch recently. Burning all my games to disk and making dvd covers and instruction booklets. For my own enjoyment obviously. This is a pointless activity.

I also buy scratched rare games, get them buffed and resell them as very good condition.

its a forced meme. you can tell because its completely retarded. imagine wanting a dvd or a cartridge when you can house your entire media library on a 4tb ssd

Objectively incorrect!

And besides, modern SSDs have objectively better endurance nowadays!

this was common back then because everyone was retarded with how they handled dvd’s. nowadays people are retarded but they know to handle it with care

This was only common among children and people with the brainpower of children. It doesn't happen as much now because blu rays have a much tougher coating to compensate for a thinner protective layer (needed for the different laser wavelength)

Neither will the license on "your" digital games.

Show me evidence that HDDs fail faster than SSDs
My old HDD from 2014 is still working, aside from some wear and tear due to its age, and I still use it as extra storage for games
Besides, you’re using a top-of-the-line, high-quality SSD as an example, but you know full well that the vast majority of people have cheap SSDs, especially these days when those costs are higher

It's not that, it's actually a lot less nefarious. The less you own, the easier it is to move you around. Ever wonder why fast food joints all look the same now? Because that fast food joint can easily be converted into a Verizon Wireless store thanks the buildings lack of personality. People are the same way, think of them like assets.

You can just transfer the data to another new harddrive.
>>
>>741826617

Only way to scratch a disk is if you store it in a bucket of screws and nails or something.

The hardware to actually play this shit is currently my biggest fucking problem.
Yeah cool I have all my PS2 and Xbox games in really good condition, but those consoles have died in various ways and I'd need to buy more shit to actually play them if they did work because lmao RCA cables.
>>
>>741826961
Which is why CDs were an objective step down for gaming. My SNES cartridge slot works as good as it did back in '95 btw.
>>
>>741826617
I don't. I always used no CD cracks and ripped isos. Fuck having to swap disks and floppies.

There are ancient CDs being dumped for Redump all the time, man.
Ultimately, optical media lasts longer than the meme Flash memory Nintendo uses since the DS days. These are, however, just a terrible batch, apparently.
It's way cheaper as well.
>>
When Sony's network gets hacked once a year, my physical media stays safe. Pushing digital only so these massive corporations can peddle their "gaming insurance" is the big endgame. Create the problem, sell the solution.
>>
>>741830457
>Owning cheap plastic shit
>Doesn't even confer any advantages anymore, because it all still needs to phone home
This whole trend was started when software copyright became a thing in the 80s, before then there wasn't anything of value to the storage medium, because companies weren't just selling you a license, they were forced to give you the software and you could do anything with it.
>>741830797
I'm sure you're fighting the man by buying more and more Funko Pops.
>>741836943
The problem is that you are relying on external infrastructure for your shit so that you can play it on a DRM machine that you don't own.
Digital isn't a problem if you own the hardware, it doesn't need to phone home and there is no DRM.
>>
>>741839902
>digital isn't a problem

Until I need to sell it
>>
>>741839902
>Owning cheap plastic shit
It's actually expensive plastic
>Doesn't even confer any advantages anymore
Ownership is the only advantage is needs.
>>
>>741840049
>Oh no, the one-time season pass code in the box has already been redeemed, you'll have to buy another for 15$
>There are limited install for this game, you used up 2 by changing your hardware specs
>Someone already dumped this game and we detected you playing the same game at the same time, so we are going to brick your device
Selling physical shit isn't even guaranteed to work. If you can't afford to impulse buy the equivalent of gamer girl bathwater due to financial insecurity, then just pirate it, bottle your own bathwater.
>>741840072
>Ownership is the only advantage is needs.
So it confers all the important qualities of ownership?
There is no DRM, I can modify it however I want, I can run it on any generic PC and disc drive, I don't need to deal with online authentication, I can host all necessary services myself, I can make copies for personal use and backups, etc.?
>>
>>741840930
>So it confers all the important qualities of ownership?
Yup.
>There is no DRM, I can modify it however I want, I can run it on any generic PC and disc drive, I don't need to deal with online authentication, I can host all necessary services myself, I can make copies for personal use and backups, etc.?
None of those are qualities of media ownership. Those are qualities of modding and copy right infringement.
>>
>>741843113
>Modding
Aka something you can do with things you own
>copy right infringement
Doesn't apply if I'm not redistributing copies to someone else.

I still have my original PS1 games that work perfectly fine on my original PS1 console.
They're about 27-28 years old at this point in time, maybe a little older.
You know why they all still work? Because I put the discs back in their boxes after use and didn't leave them lying around like a fucking heathen bastard.

This is one of the stupidest arguments I've ever seen against ownership. "Oh but it might get damaged" Yeah so? Look after it then, but at least you will own it and it can't be taken from you.
People take care of antiques that are hundreds of years old but somehow you faggots can't contemplate the idea of taking care of your own games, the supposed hobby you care about.
If your games are like the picture in OP then it's because (You) were a lazy shite and couldn't be bothered to put your games away after you played with them.

>>
Physical media gave you the ability to play the game in it's pure form. ((((Updates))) and other shit can fuck up the original games.
>>
>>741844252
Well, the idea is that you polish out the scratches. I once brought a disc to a repair surface and they did a pretty good job of making it look perfectly clean again.
I did this with Crash Bandicoot 3, the game was buggy and crash would continuously jump and hit pause by itself, tried 3 different controllers problem persisted, after cleaning the disc the problem STILL persisted but much later I found out the problem stopped when I took out the 3rd party memory card, crazy shit.
So yeah, hardware issues can come in all shapes and sizes.
>>
>>741844204
>Aka something you can do with things you own
And things you don't own so it's irrelevant.
>>
>>741844647
I have a bridge to resell to you.
>>
>>741826617
You could always get the discs resurfaced. It was only a problem for deep scratches which were less common since it required you to actually physically damage the disc. Lots of small scratches like this were always fine. In fact, lot of consoles were still able to read very scratched discs as long as they were surface level.
