Unironically who is still playing this shit and why?

It's basically better than RS3 by this point, but nostalgia blinds the fools.

You can make one single cent by playing
>>
People who want a long term MMO that isn't WoW or FF14
People who never played RS and have zero nostalgia for old school so they pick the modern looking one
Old RS2 players who weren't turned off by evolution of combat and kept going
Actual degenerates playing both OSRS and RS3 since you can play both on the same membership
>>
>>741830958
My buddy because he wants to play wow but also wants to hold onto some smug superiority he gives himself by playing it instead of wow with my other friends

Membership pays for both games. The only reason not to play one is because you are doing content in the other (and you cannot log into both games at the same time)

it's nostalgic digital heroin for rapidly aging millennials and gen x'ers

Its very good. And the devs are amazing in both games osrs and rs3. IF YOU want an mmorpg with friends play rs3 group ironman. It will be the best mmorpg experience in your life.

There is a Runescape 2 and 3?
>>
>>741835570
Yes. they're all the same game.
>>
>>741835713
As in, just fancy names for big content patches or a redesign of the same game twice?
>>
My friend plays it because he can play the mobile version at work.
Group bank mode was an interesting idea, but I would rather just play vintage story.

Runescape 3 is Runescape 2; the client is still officially called "Rs2client.exe". Also, it hasn't been called "Runescape 3" since 2014; that was just a temporary marketing term.
Now they're doing something called "Road to Restoration" and they changed the logo to "RUNE T SCAPE" or "Rune T ScapE" (the T is a sword).

Depends on the Runescape

OSRS?
The game exists to be centrally authenticated autism olympics. Its playerbase exists primarily to see who can perform best in the field of pure unadulterated tedium, maximizing high intensity tedium, tedium prolonged over a long period of time, and very often some cross-section of the two. This is best illustrated by how the playerbase actively decries new XP methods that are more fun being anywhere close to the best leveling methods, because even though it'd still take dozens of hours of active clicking and participation to get your levels, the fact that it's fun means you might actually want to do it, which devalues the entire point. You basically get a permanent playerbase of entrenched autismos when their peak of gameplay is
>hrm, I've clicked in the same spot for 40 hours
>now to pay an additional $15/mo for another character so I can do it again, but this time restricted to this location, so it'll take 80 hours of clicking to get the levels (which I won't use for any actual content)

RS3?
A while back, they did a lot of overhauls to skills and the game's systems as a whole so that doing them, as to better commit to sandbox design and rewarding whatever way to play as its own niche. The game generally rewards any journey, and the destination is a meaningful place in the game's ecosystem, no matter which path you've taken. Not to mention, a lot of content like the bossing is genuinely high quality in the industry overall. It's why, for years, the only things people have been really able to knock against it was some obnoxious cosmetics and a daily login system that gets massive hate despite really only giving a small leg up for newbies in the current ecosystem, but both are getting removed, so it might be worth checking out when that happens.

Its just "Runescape" and "Old school runescape"
but when you are talking about both it can be a bit confusing some people call it rs3 vs osrs

The only people who just straight call it rs3 are people who exclusively have played osrs and haven't played runescape in 15 years, as its always needing to be specified
to everyone else its just runescape and osrs

I'm waiting for plugins before I come back. Pretty sure it's a few months till they're in.

>piss off whales who had nothing going for them besides rolling for cosmetics
>piss off casuals who loved the massive exp rates you could get from lamps and stars making it less painful to grind skills
>the people who don't play the game and voted for the removal of treasure hunter continue to not play the game because it's still not OSRS which they will never leave
>game's left with a fraction of the already dwindling playerbase
lmao

Dragonwilds has even fewer players and they aren't abandoning it any time soon.

Runescape Classic (the old ugly 2d game) is RS1
Runescape 2 was the one most people have nostalgia for, when they updated the graphics and added a ton of shit
In 2013 they updated the remake, released the quest where Guthix dies, which ends the 5th age and starts the 6th one in the lore, which changes a fuckton of shit in the game world. They also updated the engine and the interface. That's RS3

It's all the same game, progress carried over, it was just a big overhaul each time
>>
>>741842993
updated the engine*
>>
>>741835570
Runescape 2 was a major overhaul of the game in 2004, the original version became Runescape Classic. Runescape 3 wasn’t a new game but several big updates that happened around 2013. The current Runescape is the continuation of RS3, OSRS is a forked rerelease of RS2.

Dragonwilds is not a MMO and doesn't have subscription or MTX

>>

I'm not saying they are going to or should abandon RS3, I'm saying they pissed off their whales without getting the benefit of new players in return.
>>
is rs3 actually fun? how hard is it to get back into?
t. osrs player that haven't played since EOC
>>
>>741840024
honestly as much as i like the new CEO this was kind of a retarded move. OSRS already is the primary attractor for people wanting that old school MMO feeling, meanwhile RS3 appeals to normies & whales. That was not actually a bad thing from the companies perspective, they served two entirely different communities. Now they are turning it into 2 games serving the same and one of those games probably just dying out as a result.

Changes in EU law meant that they would probably need to get rid of Treasure Hunter soon anyway; they just capitalized on the opportunity to make a big show about it (which was probably the right move).
The advantage of making the games similar is that far more content can be recycled between the two. For example, both games are getting Vampyrium at around the same time.
Jagex is about to crack down on bots in OSRS big-time, so I would expect to see a 10-20% reduction in players

That was a Jagex self-own. They said they'd adjust skills and stuff directly to make the game more appealing to play normally. What actually happened was they buffed the first 35 levels worth of agility courses and nerfed thieving, and that's it.
