So anyone actually use melee to take down the spider queen? I tried a couple times but could barely land a hit in before being killed as her attack range is insane. Gave up finally and cheesed it by shooting fire bolts and eating mistcaps.
>>
>>741839865
I've heard anons doing it but never tried myself
>>
>>741839865
You can attack her from the side where she can't hit you.
>>
>>741839865
of course. I don't find cheeseing methods satisfying.
>>
>>741839865
>melee
killed her 3 times with sword
stand by her side and slash, dodge when she raises up and does a big body slam, repeat
last time she didn't even hit me once, just be patient

quest is still lightly bugged:) though

>start chapter2 as OC Shadow
>get job from Raven to find out what the loons are planning
>go to swamp camp
>search for Cain getting strange amulet in the process
>do focus stone quest for them and receive crawler queen quest
>report every single step to Raven
>he always replies with what basically amounts to: OK, keep going and keep me posted
>kill Minecrawler Queen
>report to Raven
>he acknowledges what I did but doesn't give much fucks, only asks if the mine is ok.
>give eggs to Cor Kalom
>witness the Great Awakening
>get Orc Cemetery quest
>decide to talk to Raven one more time before going in
>Raven berates me for not reporting about the queen earlier, which I did and he fucking acknowledged it!
>Complains about me killing the queen and giving the eggs to loons, shouts at me that 'This is OUR mine.'
>Nameless hero just replies that he had lot to do.
What the fuck?
It shouldn't be that hard to keep track of previous conversations.
>>
Can you actually keep those unlit torches or lamps permanently lit? I have no idea why some go out while others stay forever when you light them.
>>
>>741839865
yes I did it with melee
>dodge spit
>parry claw attacks
>run away from ground pound
>>
>>741839865
yes but I'm a minmaxing faggot so I killed her in like 3 hits
>>
Since we're talking about gothic maybe I can ask something about 2
How do I get busted in it? I heard the game's curve was kinda bullshit, how do I go around that?
Also, which faction?
>>
>>741844267
there's nothing wrong with minmaxing or cleaning most of the map for EXP in chapter 1
I found out that if you don't, extra enemies spawned in chapter 2 and farther will make your life miserable
ch1 = small wolf packs and orc dog packs, 3 - 4 animals max
ch2 = larger packs, 6+ animals, spread out more so if you start killing them they pull other beast from farther away
had to deal with 10+ orc dogs swarm and it wasn't pretty
>>
>>741844279
level1 train one handed to 20%
level2 train strength to 20
level3 train strength to 29
level4 train one handed to 29%
level5 +5 both to 34
rest of the game you can freestyle but prioritize one handed 60% asap
>>
>>741844540
I'm assuming that's a non-mage run? Or can I get away with that shit on a mage run too?
>>
>>741844279
Putting everything into dex + bows and plinking at enemies from a branch or roof is the most effective and braindead way of beating the game.
>>
>>741839865
didn't get there yet but it's funny because in the original you could just stand next to her and spam right-left attack until it died
>>
>>741844571
mages can just do whatever they're op when they get spells and mana pool.
>>
>>741844695
sure but won't that take fucking years now that I spent my 1st 5 fucking levels on melee?
>>
>>741844604
you can stand in front of her too at max melee range if you got a 2 hander. she cant reach you but you can reach her.
>>
>>741844484
>there's nothing wrong with minmaxing or cleaning most of the map for EXP in chapter 1
yes there is, beating every NPC just for xp is the cheesiest thing you can do in Gothic games, you can get like 2-3 extra levels like that if not more. Yes, it's an option but that doesn't mean it's not "wrong". And the reason i say this is because whenever i tried it i felt like i was cheating and didn't enjoy it at all. Which is why i only did it once and never again. I loved min-maxing but without using any bullshit or cheats like that. But that's just me.
>>
>>741844725
max level on gothic 2 is 45-47
>>
>>741844764
G2NOTR almost makes that "option" feel like the only correct one lol
>>
>>741844796
sure but the next chapters are hard as fuck and being a mid melee and a mid mage doesn't seem like it'd take you very far

>>
>>741844764
>beating every NPC
I was talking about beasts, not NPCs.
>>
>>741844809
exactly my point, minmaxing in NOTR chapter 1 without doing that is the best part of the game.
>>741844898
then sure, but many people cheese gothic by beating every NPC to get that xp which i always disliked
>>
>>741844891
How do you break notr?
>>
>>741845049
>but many people cheese gothic by beating every NPC
don't know about Hard but on Gothic you can get easily to level 16 in chapter 1 without harming a soul*
didn't even clean the the whole map, didn't do stonehenge area or anything golem related, no harpy tower, no open orc territories either
pretty sure you could get couple more levels if you cleaned all that but even 16 levels were enough for 100 STR, master 1H, novice magic, climbing, 1st level of lockpicking, diving, and bunch of animal trophies gathering skills while still leaving some leftover LP for later

*beating up Lefty or *iggers Bloodwin sends when you refuse to pay for protection doesn't count since it's quest related
>>
>>741845432
>animal trophies
it is never worth it to spend LP on learning the trophy skills in g1 remake
the 'revised' economy of the game makes it completely not worth it whatsoever
>>
>>741845537
I didn't know any better on my first blind playthrough.
I think in the end I did break even, maybe even earn some extra ore because shadowbeast skins and similar high level loot sold pretty well, you just couldn't dump it all on one merchant.
>>
>>741845613
remake sins:
1. the stupid fucking economy rework
2. not using the original voice lines
3. nerfing the shit out of magic
4. using ue5

other than that, pretty good game
>>
>>741845863
you'll get crucified for not mentioning lockpicking

economy is annoying but I don't really give a fuck
on that blind playthrough I ended up with 10K+ in chapter 5
stopped hoarding and just bought every single HP and mana potion and shitload of other things
still ended up with 3K+ left over
>>
>>741846129
FUCK YOURE RIGHT I FORGOT LOCKPICKING

remake sins:
1. the stupid fucking economy rework
2. not using the original voice lines
3. nerfing the shit out of magic
4. using ue5
5. the retarded lockpicking rework

my only excuse is that i refused to engage with that shit lockpicking system upon seeing it for my playthrough so i mustve forgotten about it
>>
>>741845863
combat is also sluggish
>>
>>741844809
>>741845049
For those who care, the Nostalgia Mod for G2 now has the option to respawn monsters on the map if you want to. You can even edit LP and HP per level if you like. Used that to have another run around in Jharkendar before I was forced to Rain of Fire Raven and finally leave.
>>
>>741846985
I tried using it but characters kept speaking in german despite the audio being in english, and I couldn't use the "bonus stat boosts (like from potions or shrines) don't make your learning cost more" mod alongside it
I also prefer the quickloot from outside the mod but I can live without it
>>
>>741845863
You forgot how the remake has basically no art style or even proper shoulder guards.

>>741847043
Well I don't have that issue since the entire game is in German but fair enough. I also get annoyed at the stat boost LP bullshit but since I can respawn the map, it no longer bothers me. I'll just farm until I have what I want
>>
>>741846854
Yeah it's fucking retarded how a game from 20 years ago feels so snappy and responsive while almost all new video games have these "realistic" sluggish movements. Meanwhile actual martial artists in the real fucking world do not move like that at all.
>>
>>741844850
You need to invest into melee as a mage because it's not until lategame that you have enough spell power and mana to clean enemies with full magic.

The most important thing in G2 is knowing which spells are good:
>goblin skeleton
>ice block
>rain of fire
These are the absolute must haves, as long as you get them as early as possible you won't end very fucked up.

You can't really. The challenge is pretty well tuned in Archolos. As soon as you creep up in power, the next chapter introduces a new dangerous enemy. The official games are hard only for the first 6-8 hrs.

Minmaxing ruined my 2hander playthrough. Was playing on Gothic difficulty, maybe I should have gone hard.
>Start game
>b-line straight to Stonecrusher
>I'm now pumping 37 damage per hit -> almost 80% of the threats in CH1 are threat no more, but rather xp food
>After a few hours of powering up more, KO Thorus for his sword
>Items and a few levels of LP into STR, I am now 2 shotting everything smaller than a Shadowbeast
>The raw damage is so high it doesn't even matter I have no training with fighting style
>Progress forwards, KO Gomez
>Following the mixmax process I'm able to wield Innos' Rage before even learning about Focus Stones
>Don't even have to bother watching if I'm running into enemies, if something appears it gets instagibbed into more XP
>Get to CH3 (or whenever the templars teach me 2h skills, immediately get to mastery because by now I have a 100+ reserve of LP)
>Everything dies so fast I never even get to combo anything
>Any desire to play or sense of adventure is gone
And that's how I robbed myself from the experience of going through the game as melee. I still completed it though, but it felt hollow. I still advocate for the ability to cheese and break the game like this, I hope the Moors chill with patching the game every 9 seconds. Gothic should always allow this kind of gameplay to be possible, but don't do it lads.
>>
>>741847430
Combat is alright, but every other animation is terribly slow. Seriously, go try the classic version and observe closely how snappy it is to engage with chests, sitting, sleeping, using stations, anything. Using items from inventory is also like four times slower than classic. Swimming is way slower as well. Go use the mod to speed up animations, but pull back the mod's defaults in the config way back to closer match the original game. Immediately the game felt way more responsive to play.
Stupid moors spent so much money on motion capture they couldn't resist showcasing them everywhere. Interaction with moving puzzle wheels and cogs is actual humiliation ritual towards the player.
>>
>>741855468
I don't really mind most of the animations, but opening gates is so fucking glacial. It's crazy.
>>
>>741855468
No need to check, I'm replaying G2 these days again and yeah the animations are quick without feeling hasty. Meanwhile in the remake I almost move like a geriatric and swim like a dead one.
Unfortunately this sort of animationslop is yet another retarded industry standard, moors simply did what they all do.
>>
>>741855570

>>741855570
I'm beginning to think it's a disguised loading screen but I don't have enough comp sci knowledge to prove it. One would think the playtesters would have raised concerns about these things. It's especially bad in the Sleeper Temple with multiple lever pulls, cogspins and puzzles. Thankfully the Orc symbol code remains the same and you don't have to go into the basement to do the pointing statue puzzle again.

>>
>>741855740
I dunno. There's plenty of unbarred gates and caves that don't need a loading sceen. Where would a loading screen be needed?
You open the monastery from the inside.
Abandoned mine gate leads to a tiny tunnel.
I guess free mine would be the most likely culprit, but it's smaller than the old mine and there's no loading gate there.

>>741855803
But John Gothic also bent down for every item in the OG, no? Picking stuff up is actually resonably fast, especially compared to stuff like lying down in bed.

>>741855950
He did. But picking items up is one of the few animations that remain as it should be. It's
>Sitting
>Sleeping (seriously, by the time you lie down on the mattress you've already slept, woken and up and are moving on in classic)
>Engaging any workstation
>Opening chest or inventory + buffer time from dropping the torch (why is this even necessary?)
>Getting on ladders (I just rather take fall damage than get cucked by ladders)
>Using any consumable from the inventory
>Swimming (my 80 year old mother swims faster than the avatar of Innos, why?)

Using the cogwheels is just laughably bad, almost like an inside joke the devs dared each other to keep as is in the shipped version of the game. Someone should raise a bit more noise about these issues, there's plenty of slog that would make the final product feel more polished if the animation pacing was good.
Getting on the scavenger mount is another good example. TNH gets on, but before you can move you have to stand still for 1 second, for whatever reason. FIX THIS SHIT.
>>
>>741855950

I finished the remake, the second half of the game was kinda bland
Not the remake's fault, which is solid minus some sound glitches, but the original's design

The game starts great with the player as a cocky little shit who gets bullied and needs to learn how the colony works. By chapter 4 you are a one man army, chosen one, the guy who everyone looks up to and you eat orcs by breakfast and raid camps on your own.
The last chapters are basically a combat gauntlet with no roleplaying, no choices, no story and barely any sidequest. Gomez, the big bad boss of the colony gets completely sidelined and its up to you if you feel like fucking his ass over his armor.

I think it was a good attempt giving the time but the tone shift from prison colony life to generic power fantasy trip feels like a mistake
>>
>>741857731
I don't think OC or SC have enough fail states. NC for sure you just have to not give the list to Lares.
>>
>>741844891
Rush master alchemy in chapter 2.
Collect all C2 perma potion ingredients.
Make potions of your choosen stat.
Enjoy.

You will be very strong, but not completely busted. I don't think archolos will allow you to break the game by getting OP items early, good weapons are chapter locked.
>>
>>741857913
Yup, and the devs knew it as well. That's why the quest log halfway spells it out if you switch to the descriptive page instead of the objective page. For instance, I had no idea it was referring to a dungeon until the quest log read "... in a dungeon, perhaps?"
>>
>>741857128
I'm not sure I follow. Thorus I beat when he's the only one left awake inside the warden barracks at night. I had a 20 second window to KO him before the guards at the second floor woke up and ran to assist. After looting I just ran out, slept for a day, and it was all forgotten.
As for Gomez I caught him walking alone upstairs to his bedroom. After a few reloads I was able to get him into a 1v1 and Storm First into melee cycle took him out.

Don't do what I did unless you're otherwise done with the game for now. It was fun putting a plan together and seeing it work out, but after that playing felt just the same as cheating with console commands. It's pointless if there's no challenge left.

Keeping Nek's amulet is not really a fail state you can still give in anytime.
Losing to Kirgo is irrelevant, you get Scatty's approval if you challenge the NC dude, even if you lose.
Fingers recommends you if you learn lockpicking, stealing Scatty's chest I think is only optional if you don't want to waste LP.
Still got Thorus' quest which has no fail state either I think.

You can tell Mordrag that Thorus sent you to get rid of him, or at least you could in the original
>>
>>741859518
Yeah but then he still entices you with joining the NC and fucks off anyway iirc.
>>
>>741859590
No, it was one of the dialogue options when you tell him that the camp is not big enough for the two of you, when you're trying to start a fight.
Thorus doesn't want anyone to know that he's behind getting rid of Mordrag because the mages would fuck him up for kicking one of their couriers out. So mentioning Thorus name always fails the quest, even if you kill Mordrag.

After joining each camp has maybe half a dozen camp quests throughout the capters.
>>
>>741870530
I plan to play with it next so all I know is from what I've read about it. Lots of new assets (stolen from other mods and especially gothic sequel), some land ported from gothic 1, companion system, option to fight with shield and dual wielding, option to play without guild, guns
generally I've heard only good things, people only bitch that
>muh nostalgic but I don't have nostalgy for guns in gothic
because from what I get, tons of new things added along the time and name stuck. I think originally it was supposed to be just introduce assets from gothic sequel and maybe more stuff from g1
anyway there was anon in this threads who played it, maybe he can say more
>>
>>741870547
I think only those quests, they don't lead to anything later on
>>
>>741870805
Nostalgia is fine because despite a lot of things being added, all of them are optional. Companions will fuck off if you tell them to (with only one exception) and none of the enemies ever use things like shields or 2 swords, so if you don't like that stuff, just sell the items and be done with it. Those things are only for people who've played the game 200 times and want something a little different. Otherwise map and story are the same for example.
>>
>>741871167
Now thinking about it I don't know any mod that adds new maps or changes story in some capacity that's not returning

L'Hiver.
Surprised you haven't seen it on workshop. massive mod and the map is used several times. Entire mountains are removed, like the range behind the beach with Skip, and there are so many new pieces of flora you'd think the world got conquered by Wood Elves.
I don't like it
>>
>>741871549
yeah, I'd say for first time playing just go vanilla with dx11 and textures, replay with mods
>>741871607
oh yeah I've played a bit with it, but other than adding new paths (often nonsensical) or changing port layout nothing really stuck to me
>>
>>741871549
Nah, it's great for a first run since it balances a few things from NotR. For example, LP cost for Mana stops at 2 points per mana, instead of continuously increasing every 30 stat points.
It removes some cheese but as a newbie you wouldn't even know about those things.
I recommend it precisely because it stays close to the og where it can, so give it a try.
>>

Now with patch 1.0.7 it looks like moors fucked up once more.

I hope Xardas' butler demon revives the 3 test golems later.

It's a shame that magic is so expensive and weak in DPS because some of these incapacitating spells are outright broken.

It's a worthless spell since any enemy stronger than an adult scavenger takes several hits before they freeze and you're standing still while charging it.
>>

I want spells that are fucking FUN to use. Remake magic system sucks more than that of Gothic 2. I hate that almost every remake spell forces you to stop moving completely while also charging and then giving mediocre or just boring results.
>>
I gotta say it looks kinda goofy to just put the 3 golems next to the tower. It's stupidly streamlined, like they placed them there just for fun. I contrast the ulu mulu quest at least placed the mobs in different places across the map.

But standing there while casting was literally how magic worked in all Gothic games, being able to move with Firebolt is a remake thing that they should've added at least for lesser spells.

>>
>>741875102
>thing that they should've added at least for lesser spells.
Exactly. I know that all spells in G2 forced you to stand still but so did attacking with Swords and bows. But only a few spells also forced you to charge, generally the late game ones. Remake combines the worst of both worlds
>>
>>741874943
His assistant as well, you know how heavy those golems are?
>>
>>741875478
I assume he placed them in the spots he wanted them in instead of lugging them up the mountain.
>>
>>741875215
Remake is based on G1, and most spells in the original forced you to stand there and charge. And a lot of them are already a lot faster in the remake, I swear uriziels ring of death took like 5 seconds to charge and needed two hits on all the endgame enemies it was meant to kill.
>>
>>741875215
I think all the spells that need charging here needed charging in the OG as well, they just seem to do less damage.

But really, magic in Gothic was always suboptimal until you got the screen nukes at the end.

>I never played the original, is it true that the massacre happened offscreen and you didn't see it?
you didn't see it. you ran into either Milten or Diego near the OC gates, who told you about what happened
It was pretty shocking in its own right, the gates were closed and there was a group of warders in front of each that would try to kill you after a short dialogue. That dialogue at least was one of the few that depended on the guild, with them being particulary angry if you were a warder yourself.

You're full of shit, NOTR can legit softblock you if you go mage and waste the scrolls you need to kill dragons.
Literally no spell you learn can outDPS dragon regeneration.
>>
>>741882584
I have yet to find a way to kill the dragons in chapter 4 as a mage without cheesing them with scrolls or NPCs
circle 4 runes just can't deal with them at all
>>
>>741882741
>>741882778
dragon dps regeneration is tied to fps, you can deal with him just fine spamming summons and stabbing him unless you roleplay as pure mage or some shit
>>
>got fired from my Warder job by Thorus
>remember I still have the deed I should give to Santino
>find him and negotiate
>he gives me some ore and shows me a secret passage inside castle
>I walk inside, start looking around, don't pull out weapon or take anything red tinted
>he starts screaming that he had enough and attacks me out of nowhere despite him shoving me the door and giving me the key few moments before
NPC behavior really needs some tuning
>>
>>741882741
>outDPS dragon regeneration
I have a mod that adds more graphics options including the option to limit my FPS
I'm sure I will manage.
>>
>>741882852
As far as I recall goblin skeletons and skeletons do 0 damage to the tougher dragons, or else they cannot outDPS them either.
You need to summon demons, and that are scrolls.

>you got to cap your FPS so you can actually kill the boss
Great game design.

Speaking of Gothic 2, I just finished the mods tier list I mentioned a few threads ago. I think I included every major mod I could think of, but please let me know if I missed any or made a mistake. I know there are about 10 different L’Hiver mods, but unfortunately I don’t really know how different they are from each other. It doesn’t help that they all have very similar names. I also decided to split New Balance and Returning into two separate categories. Hope that makes sense. Enjoy!
https://tiermaker.com/create/gothic-2-mods-tier-list--18804166-2
>>
>>741882980
honestly I don't remember how mage is, but I have finished the game as one so it must be doable
anyway pure mage is a challenge run, same as in 1, not something you want to do as your first playthrough
>>
>>741883105
I also finished the game as a mage, I remember back then when I went blind it softblocked me so it left me forever salty at NOTR (it also didn't help that i had to scrub through Jharkendar by massing summon goblin skeleton because spells hit for shit).

Then some years later I did another run remembering to save Rain of Fire and Summon Demon scrolls and could finish.

Simply put, NOTR shouldn't be the way you play Gothic for a first playthrough. It's clearly intended for challenge runs. Being a mage is a normal ass thing to want to be in an RPG it should be relatively straight-forward.

Question after the betrayal in chapter 3 for people who did the old camp.

I killed the two guards at the orc entrance gate thingy, any downside to doing this? They weren't aggro'd to me (which I thought they would be)
>>
>>741883245
though as nonmage is perfectly fine, spellsword as well
>>
>>741883298
>any downside to doing this?
Killing whoever the fuck you want once you are strong enough is a basic bitch Gothic mechanic.
>>
>>741883105
I remember finishing Gothic 2 as a teen as pure mage. The original, mind you, not NotR. It was pretty terrible because I ran out of rune stones after assuming they were endless, so I had to finish the game by just spamming demon summons. Every fight was basically me summoning a demon, hiding behind something, and somehow managing to beat the game like that.
>>
>>741883404
Nah I mean moreso will it lock me out of anything.

I usually get autisitc with these games. I'm level 24 before I even hit chapter 4 and the two quests I have being stuck in my quest log is still triggering me (swampweed, I sold it, The Raid quest, I just took part in the Raid but never turned it in because I wanted to be on the Old Camp. Never doing that fucking mistake in future playthroughs, FUCK the old camp)
>>
>>741883584
No worries, as long as you don't exterminate entire camps, you'll be fine. Killing random NPCs doesn't matter. Though there are some quests from Cavalorn for the bestiary and Aiden teaches you hunting skills. Kill them and you lose those options.

Was gonna massacre the new NEW camp though until I saw they were named. Wonder if they play a part in later chapters. This game is fucking kino even if it is glitchy AF.

Also, Lester having headaches in the fortress place (for the focus stone), is it any relation to the guy found in the bottom? I assumed the Whisperer guided this poor lad to the focus crystal and he got fugged up somehow

You mean in Jharkendar, next to the Pirates? Dude, once you get the mission from Greg to clear the place you can just use your boarding troops to clear out the orks as well. Just kill them in small groups and then bumrush the two shamans.

The timing window is harder untrained in classic games than the remake. As a noob you can basically only really swing left to right. As a master you should be able to pull a 4-move combo.
Study this video, skip to the relevant moments to git gud. The most important melee mechanic is understanding how to backpedal and strafe.

New Camp is the only one that makes sense to me story wise. They're the only ones actually trying to escape the barrier. Hero doesn't believe in the Sleeper and even any dialogue option saying otherwise comes with a sardonic "lol, can't believe I have to say this shit" tone, so you're joining Swamp Camp only for the weed or at most because your Hero just thinks Templars are hella cool. Old Camp is just a bunch of cucks willingly sucking up to Gomez in hopes of getting some of that sweet, sweet trickle down economy and then getting surprised when they just get to eat scraps and bufs, sleep in huts full of holes and end up losing what little they own to protection money payments.
