Why didn't they just make a straightforward sequel to Beyond Good & Evil?
Because Ancel got George Lucas brained or w/e and decided that actually, the story he would have wanted to tell with the true sequel wouldn't have made any sense if they didn't do a prequel first to build and explain everything he wanted to do in the eventual true sequel. And then he left and retired anyway.
