AI doesn't need these SSDs specifically but like all products that contain some form of memory the manufacturer can either sell those memory components in something geared towards AI or use the staff and resources allocated to said product to produce something else that can be sold to AI companies for way more profit.
>>
>>741858902
Not at all, they're filling up quickly.
>>
>>741858386
First of all, that's a SATA drive. Samsung is largely trying to focus on NVME production.
Second, crucial completely bailing out of the consumer market didn't do prices any favors. The less supply, the higher demand, the pricier shit gets. This is basic shit even a 2nd grader knows.
Lastly, it's not like each particular model of SSD uses completely different materials. Everyone's gobbling this shit up. There's less to go around, so they make choices where to allocate what they've got. See supply demand again.
It's not hard. If my dumb ass can work out this much, your big brain should've been able to as well.
>>

>>
>>741859248

You can still get a high speed external SSD for pretty cheap, those don't seem to have been affected as much in price. You can run retro emulators directly off them, for newer games you can store them on there and transfer them to your main SSD faster than you'd be able to download them on Steam. Not the most elegant solution but just about works for now.
>>
>>741858321
HDDs are going up in price too. I was thinking of buying a NAS shortly before sam altman fucked everything up and the prices were rising by the day until they went out of stock completely.

None of these price hikes are directly caused by AI. Chip shortage due to AI companies buying boatloads of chips is a lie. There aren't shelves of "reserved for [AI company]" chips sitting in warehouses. Consumer grade components come from different factories and are created under different BOMs. The reality is the j*ws are simply using current topic (AI) to jack the prices up of consumer grade goods (computer hardware) to push towards a you-will-own-nothing future. It works quite well since useful idiots and normalniggercattle that think they are smart but actually aren't (example: >>741859179) think "that makes sense its computer stuff and AI needs computer stuff" and will play defense for them. AI is the scapegoat.

There is a real shortage because Samsung like all the other manufacturer would rather spend their limited production capacity on selling to enterprise for more profit. Just like NVIDIA could churn out RTX 5060s for a modest profit but they focus on data center GPUs to earn a gajillion dollars.

>But why would AI need an SSD?
On the off chance this is a genuine question
AI models (the file itself) are massive and numerous. You can have one main file and then a fuckton of "addon" files that can function as "plugins" to help guide the main file to do what you want. This takes up a lot of space. Terabytes.
And since you can't load EVERYTHING into your RAM at once, you have to swap files in and out of memory. Well, the files are fucking huge, so what's the fastest way to read files? SSDs
