Has animation in video games gotten better or worse over the years?
>>
Significantly better I'm not sure how this is even a question when we use real motion tracking now
>>

Motion tracking is bland and soulless and should only be used for realismslop
>>
>>741868901
Hardware got better, but people are becoming more skill-less and soulless.
So it's all pointless.
We literally live in the gayest time in all of history.

Motion capture has unironically made animation far worse. A good studio could hand craft excellent animation using principals like stretching and squishing and other techniques developed from the 2D days. Meanwhile, motion captured models almost always come across as weird and never got with the models or artstyle - usually way too stiff or have too much movement. There's a reason why traditional animation uses keyframes.

I never understood why you wouldn't do a motion-capture pass, "remove" 40% of the data to get keyframes and block out movement, animate THAT with good principles and if it's not an important move just go back to the motion captured pass so you have a highly informationally dense and realistic movement, with the tenants of animation that we've come to expect.

someone who actually knows animation tell me why we can't just do that.
