The closest to actively hostile level design in Elden Ring is the Shunning Grounds.
And that is way more user-friendly than areas in some other games.

I don't dislike Caelid's enemies nor gimmicks except for the art direction of the place. It's truly revolting and sickening to be there. I hate the way it looks, and of course they did a good job bringing the rot theme to the place.

It's a solid red Duplo set with giant spiders and crazy monsters with 20 teeth scattered all over the place for no reason.
It has no purpose.
It's so tacked on that it's jarring. You walk through a giant archway and then it's a giant wasteland of lava from a cartoon.

It's not a literal metaphor for hell and it's not a twisted tormented underbelly and it's not analogous for anything. It's a "fire level" from super mario brothers.

They have thoughtlessly replicated the same game and I literally don't think the developers even know why any of this shit is there.
