Why did it fail?
>expensive proprietary memory card>back touch pad adding to the cost (a feature nobody asked for)>Sony wanting devs to AAA games for a system with a low install base, which would lose those studios' money. (so of course it didn't become a portable AAA machine)Still kino, I like it almost as much as my PSP.
Sony abandoned it. It was good for Jap games.
Sony never truly had confidence in it. Even before they abandoned support to (supposedly) push PS4, they Mickey Mouse'd around the memory cards at launch to make it look like it had price parity with 3DS' launch price. To say that didn't pan out in the face of its competitor suddenly being $80 cheaper is an understatement. At least the launch year lineup was alright, but Sony never capitalized on the small niches where Vita did find some footing on, it was basically carried by niche third party devs for however far it did end up going.
mobile gaming replaced handhelds by the time the vita came out.
>>741878617everyone always talks about mobile gaming and proprietary storage being the things that killed the vita, but really it was losing monster hunter.imagine a world where 3u, 4u and xx came out on the vita instead of the 3ds
Monster Hunter saved the PSP, no Monster Hunter killed the Vita
>>741878617phone
>>741881813Given how pivotal MonHun was to the PSP's identity, that is a factor. Also pivotal to the PSP's identity was rampant piracy, which ultimately resulted in Vita's memory cards. The games were free up front but the price was paid elsewhere and later.
>>741878617So you take the PSP audience and tell them to buy Uncharted, Borderlands and proprietary storage at outrageous prices.
>>741882290>So you take the PSP audience and tell them to buyAlready lost them.
>>741878617instead of making this thread again why don't you just check the archive for the thousands of responses
>>741882395Yes, yes, epic meme, which is why during the heyday of this farce PSP was still receiving truckloads of games.
>>741882470Because the PSP sold about as well as the Game Boy Advance, and to date is the only handheld competitor to even be in the same discussion as Nintendo in terms of sheer units moved. Don't look too hard at the DS, though.
>>741882290The audience for those games aren't that different than GTA Stories, the best-selling games on PSP
>>741883003I'm sure that's what sony believed, but reality has a tendency to be the complete opposite of what sony thinks.
no games
>>741883179Had more games than PS5. Killzone Mercenary, Wipeout 2048, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Tearaway, Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice Delta.
>>741878617i remember how soon the vita started being sold at a huge discount, and they were basically giving away the ps tv after a year as well. a fucking controller cost more than the ps tv in some places. i have both the handheld and the tv system and i think i paid less than a combined $150 for both, and this was at a time when you could easily do homebrew on it.
>>741878617>focus on hardware affecting price>no games>Too expensive for having no games
>>741878617idk but the battery in my launch day one exploded like 13 months after i bought it
I always thought it was the lack of the exclusives. There are very few Vita Only games and the ones that are there are pretty bad. The worst Ridge Racer and Silent Hill for example. But the success of the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs has shown me that no people really will just play big console/pc games at low quality on a small screen and love it. And there were plenty of those. So I dont know.
>>741886498Vastly underselling the deck there.>very comfortable in a sea of lunatics that will tell you the 3DS has fine ergos>extremely accessible storage options>input methods to bridge PC games to a handheld>indieshit without terrible, out of date ports from humble bundle and other hack publishers>you can play your already existing library>belongs to you from day one, no need for garbage temporary hacks with early firmware entries like the crap on PS4 and PS5 Also, the Vita ports were notoriously awful, even worse than the worst Switch ones.
It nothing the psp was.
>>741886498The vita and wiiu outsold the dreck several times over.
Sony was extremely retarded and made memory extremely expensive. Doing this made no one want to buy big games because it was extremely expensive and for me I was resentful that it cost so much.So it became a ps1 emulation machine which isn't what keeps a console alive.
>>741878617its still pretty good for playing psp and ps1 games i guess
>>741881813Nah, the reason I didn't buy it when it came out was definitely those expensive as fuck memory cardsI ended up buying one of the 3g ones when it went on mega clearance though and then lost it in a flood, ripI wouldn't have bought it for full price for anything, even monster hunter, and I'm not sure the japs would've either. Those memory cards were so fucking expensive. $30 for 4 gigs in 2011/2012 was ludicroushttps://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps-vita-memory-card-prices-revealed-retail-radar/1100-6346704/
