it is impossible for a Metroid game to be a big as HK, we know this, but nintendo should for once try to make a 2D Metroid game twice as big as they usually are, which is not much, with a few optional areas, bosses and new upgrades that are not more useless missile and powerbomb expansions

cool I don't want metroid to be a normalfag central

more sales = more games

There is not a single thing I would want to see Metroid take from Hollow Shit

Not even charms for customization?

Impressive.

not that crap but easy to code powerups that would increase the radius to get energy and ammo drops, longer grapple beam distance, higher missile firerate and such would already make exploration more rewarding
>>
>>741886737
wider audience = shallower game
>>
>>741888260
Dread is the shallowest game possible and I still like it a lot but
>cinematic QTEs
>linear as shit so normies don't ever get lost
>checkpoints up the ass but "hard" bosses and "scary" emmis as streamerbait
they knew exactly what they were doing, hence the 3M+ copies sold, quite a lot for a metroid game

bumpoid

Why? It's an objective improvement in every way?

Elden Ring is the deepest FromSoft game

Metroid being short and dense is one of its strengths

It’s too long running of a franchise to make major changes without pissing off the fans (like Zelda). People have expectations of what a Metroid game should be. Dread conformed to the formula well.

Just using the most egregious example of the shitty and obvious padding of that franchise, since you’d otherwise defend the rest of its sloptent reflexively. But even you couldn’t stoop to defending that shit, so you sperg lol

Size isn't the problem with metroid, the main problem is direction. The last proper metroid games came out in 2004 with zero mission/prime 2, every game after has had tarnished exploration and level design in favor of action set pieces and retarded mechanics like stealth
>>
>>741894915
silksong has shitty quests for padding, including this one where you need to farm rng drops from enemies
>>
>>741895081
Have you tried Zexion or the Xanthiom games?
>>
>>741895123
We don't need that nonsense but we could gladly take the map size and optional areas, only that, not npcs or shitty side quests and combine it with metroid's gameplay. That would be the perfect game.
>>
>>741895585
Bloating the map size completely dilutes the core of a metroid game, getting new powers that allow you to move, fight and explore in new ways. A but bugger and some optional fights would be fine, but HK and Silksong are completely bloated, and their search action appeal completely tanks. Doesn’t help that the abilities are already so few, basic and singular
>>
>>741895851
As much as I love HK/SS there's no getting around the fact that the charm system being a series of incremental sidegrades and the map being so massive that you can go hours between major abilities are self-reinforcing problems. If there's space, there needs to be a reward for exploration (or at least something other than the tedium of not guessing which one is the primary path). If there's rewards, they need to not invalidate major progression.
>>
>>741895851
haven't played Silksong so idk if traversal is faster or not than in HK but a map like HK's or slightly smaller with the speed booster, a couple optional areas and bosses and some new powerups besides the classic missile/pb expansions would be more than enough, even if those optional areas are as small as Elun that would be enough
you explore, you find it, it has some tougher platforming or enemies, fight an optional boss and you get something new
idk why they are too scared to do that, it is a proven formula at this point, they can still have their beloved qtes, cutscenes and some linear segments if they want
>>
>>741894915
Collect 10 bug asses.
Unironically. And there's like 5 quests like this

>>741892028
Hollowknight might be alarge game but very little is high quality.
FFS even silksong locks a wall jump behind an upgrade vs metroid superjust having it as a default tool.
The power up are bland as fuck.
Enremies range from piss nothing to mildly annoying at worse.
Map interconnectivity isnt new at all. Etc. You faggots unironicallyneed to play more video games.
I like team cherry's work but they are no savior of gaming

So how do we make a Metroid game with rewarding exploration? I.e. there needs to be something to discover and collects other than +5 missiles or +1 energy tank

Because the rewards are so sparse and bleak compared to other games in the genre there's not much excitement in finding secrets, and spamming 200 missiles at every boss to win is also getting old (parryslop in samus returns and dread is the "official" solution to this lmao.)
>>
>>741897427
>”fixing” what isn’t broken
no thanks, I don’t want a bunch of buildcraft shit dumped into metroid. You know what isn’t rewarding? Getting shit you won’t use at all because it’s junk compared to what you already have, or it only works for a particular, stupid playstyle. I’ll gladly take my missiles and HP and eschew soulslop sensibilities
>>
>>741897427
Rewards aren’t sparse at all. They’re much denser than other games in the genre, unless you stupid enough to believe currency is an actual reward and not the absence of a reward and a poor attempt to incentivize backtracking
>>
>>741897764
It's not broken per se, I've just already played nes, super, zm, fusion, am2r, and a million different romhacks and even the roguelike fangame that generates a new map every single time you play.

At a certain point it's not exciting to find missiles . Missiles. More missiles. If you're lucky the most interesting thing you get is a spider ball or some shit as a one-off.
>>
Hunters got it right by making you carry as many beams as possible.

>>
>>741897427
You make it dense enough that it's rare for the player to be neither in familiar territory nor on the primary progression path, and you make rewards common but hidden with increasing complexity so that there's an average power level but rewards for diligence. The expectation that a player will 100% the game blind is the issue.
